WoW Forever Beta: Kyle's Gone Missing! Returns & Cozy Sleeping Bag Questline Guide (Week of Oct 5)
QUICK ANSWER · WoW: Forever Beta · Week of Oct 5
• Kyle's Gone Missing! is back: Blizzard's October 1 beta development notes list it under Mulgore. Ahab Wheathoof in Bloodhoof Village asks you to find his dog Kyle. It is the 2007 Make-A-Wish quest created and voiced by Ezra Chatterton.
• How it works: collect Tender Strider Meat from plainstriders, find Kyle the Frenzied running around Bloodhoof, feed him, return to Ahab.
• Cozy Sleeping Bag: a cross-continent questline (level 14+) from Season of Discovery. Rest on the bag for +1% XP per minute, up to 3%, and stack it with the 5% food buff. 1-hour cooldown.
• Tester-reported problems: bag stays behind when you change layers while the cooldown keeps running; Student Fodder says "Target is too low level"; the Horde route runs past Alliance guards. None acknowledged by Blizzard yet.
• Clock: beta level cap 30; beta runs through October 21; launch November 4, 3:00 p.m. PST (5:00 p.m. CST).

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta has entered its quieter middle stretch. The level cap went to 30 on October 1, the Excavation Site: Wetlands dungeon opened, and the October 3 build focused on warrior updates. We have not seen a new beta maintenance post for the week of October 5 at time of writing, so testers have time to wander, and two small things have taken over the conversation: a returning memorial quest in Mulgore, and a sleeping bag.

Neither one is a headline system like Legacy Points or Camping. Both say a lot about what Forever is trying to be. Kyle's Gone Missing! is a Burning Crusade quest that Blizzard brought into a game built on the original continents because players asked for it. The Cozy Sleeping Bag is a Season of Discovery leveling item that arrived in the same beta where Blizzard just cut dungeon quest XP in half, and players are arguing about whether those two decisions fit together.

This guide covers both: where to go, what you get, what is officially confirmed, and what is only being reported by testers. If you are catching up on the bigger picture first, read our level cap 30 breakdown and the full October 1 patch notes guide, then come back here.

Kyle's Gone Missing! Returns to Mulgore

The Story Behind the Quest

Kyle's Gone Missing! was created through a Make-A-Wish collaboration in 2007 for Ezra Chatterton, a young player known in game as Ephoenix, who was battling brain cancer. Ezra created and voiced the quest giver, Ahab Wheathoof, a tauren in Bloodhoof Village whose dog Kyle has run off. Players are asked to find Kyle and bring him home with a treat. The Double Kill notes the quest went live in patch 2.1.2 during The Burning Crusade. Ezra passed away in 2008, and the quest has stayed in the game as a quiet memorial ever since.

Because it was added in TBC rather than at launch in 2004, it was not part of the original Mulgore. Forever's starting point is the original continents, so when the beta opened on September 17, Ahab and Kyle were not there.

How It Came Back

The timeline on Blizzard's own forums is short and genuinely sweet:

  • Mid to late September: testers opened several threads asking for the quest, including Can we put the Kyle Questline back into Mulgore? and Kyle's Gone Missing is missing. Several posters acknowledged it was not vanilla content and asked for an exception anyway.
  • September 28: community manager Kaivax replied in the Mulgore thread: "We're working on it. Stay tuned!"
  • October 1: the WoW Forever Beta Development Notes update included a single line under Mulgore: "The quest 'Kyle's Gone Missing!' has been added."
  • October 2: Blizzard designer Johnny Cash (@QuestTheLine) posted that he "had the honor and privilege of bringing 'Kyle's Gone Missing!' into WoW: Forever," calling Ezra "an enormous WoW fan, the creator and voice actor behind Ahab Wheathoof, and the creator of Kyle," and adding, "A tear was shed during this one, my friends. Rest in peace, Ezra."
  • October 5: Shacknews covered the return, framing it as a heartwarming exception to Forever's dedication to the original path.
It took roughly four days from "we're working on it" to the quest being live on the beta. Forum threads like Thanks for re-adding Kyle's Gone Missing filled up with players thanking the team, including at least one former Make-A-Wish kid who wrote about what the program meant to them.

How to Complete Kyle's Gone Missing! in Forever

The quest is short and very low level. Based on the original quest flow and current tester reports from the beta:

  • Pick up the quest from Ahab Wheathoof in Bloodhoof Village, Mulgore. The Double Kill reports it is available from level 5. Blizzard's notes do not list a level, so treat that as a tester report.
  • Get Tender Strider Meat. Hunt plainstriders in the fields around Bloodhoof until the meat drops. In the original version the drop came from Adult and Elder Plainstriders and could take several kills. Mob names and drop rates on the Forever beta may differ slightly.
  • Find Kyle the Frenzied. He runs laps around Bloodhoof Village. He is fast and does not stop for you.
  • Use the meat when he is close. Kyle stops to eat, which completes the objective.
  • Return to Ahab to turn it in.
Horde players starting as tauren will run into it naturally. Other Horde characters can make the trip whenever they like, since it is a low-level quest and Mulgore is safe ground for the Horde. Bloodhoof Village is a Horde town, so in practice this is a Horde quest.

Will Other Memorials Follow?

The Kyle decision opened a door, and players have walked through it. There are now forum threads asking Blizzard to add other memorials to Forever, including requests about Ibelin, Reckful, and others. We have not seen a Blizzard reply in those threads at time of writing, so do not read the Kyle decision as a promise that every later memorial will come back. What it does show is that Blizzard is willing to make specific, well-argued exceptions to the "original content first" approach when the community case is strong.

The Cozy Sleeping Bag Questline

Where It Came From

The Cozy Sleeping Bag first appeared in Season of Discovery in 2024 as a hidden questline that sent players across both continents. Testers on the Forever beta found that the chain had come back, and Wowhead reported it in late September with screenshots credited to the WoW Secret Finding Discord. Two weeks and one level cap later, it has gone from curiosity to one of the more argued-about items on the beta forums.

What the Bag Does

Wowhead and Method's guides agree on the core effect:

  • Place the bag and rest on it to gain +1% experience per minute, stacking up to +3%. Three minutes of standing still gives you the full buff.
  • The bag has a 1-hour cooldown.
  • It stacks with other XP boosts, notably the 5% buff most new food in Forever gives.
Details that vary between sources, so treat them as tester reports:
  • Buff duration. Method's guide lists it as one hour. A Wowhead commenter reported two hours.
  • Placement. Method says placing the bag is a 10-second cast that taking damage will interrupt, so pick a safe spot.
  • Rested area. Method says the bag counts as a rested area, so logging out on it continues rested XP accumulation like an inn would.
Three percent sounds small. The point is that it stacks. Food plus the bag plus rested XP plus whatever Legacy talents you have unlocked starts to add up over a 1 to 60 run. If you are planning a route, our 1 to 60 leveling guide, Legacy Points guide, and Camping guide cover the other pieces of that stack.

Rewards From the Chain

According to Wowhead, the chain also rewards:

  • 5x Student Fodder
  • A 12-slot bag from the Stepping Stones step
Student Fodder is the item that changed most. In Season of Discovery it gave a large chunk of rested experience. Wowhead's October 4 report says that in Forever it no longer gives rested XP. It instead heals you, restores part of your class resource, and applies Trail Snack, a short burst of 60% movement speed for 0.75 seconds plus a heal over time of 175 per tick. Wowhead suggests the rested XP was removed because Forever already has several other leveling accelerators.

Questline Route: Horde and Alliance

The chain starts at level 14 according to Wowhead, but Method recommends at least level 30 for Horde because of where it sends you. Both factions visit the same six stops; only the first two are swapped.

6Hillsbrad Foothills, top of the wall via broken cart87.36, 49.62Turn in Eagle's Fist at the bag, then click the scroll for This Must Be the Place and the Cozy Sleeping Bag.

Wowhead also flagged that the quest steps are currently visibly marked in game, which was not how the secret worked in Season of Discovery. If you want to solve it blind at launch, stop reading the table now and wait.

Travel Tips by Faction

Alliance has the easier ride. Hearth to Stormwind or Ironforge, and the Loch Modan and Hillsbrad legs are friendly or neutral ground. The scary leg is getting to the Barrens: Method suggests running through Duskwood and Stranglethorn Vale to Booty Bay, then taking the boat to Ratchet. Expect to die at least once in Stranglethorn if you are under level 30.

Horde has the hard version. Method's route takes the Grom'gol zeppelin and has you swim to the southern coast of Westfall, then later run from Undercity down to Loch Modan, a trip they estimate at around 40 minutes without a mount with high-level enemies on the way. The Loch Modan dam is patrolled by guards, and the forum thread Sleeping bag questline for Horde points out that Horde has to pass hostile guards both in the tunnel into Loch Modan and at the dam itself. On PvP rulesets, that also means other players. Grab every flight point you pass; you will want them later regardless.

Tester-Reported Problems With the Sleeping Bag

None of the following has been acknowledged by Blizzard at time of writing. All of them are player reports on the official beta forums, summarized by WoW Forever Builds.

  • The bag gets left behind when you change layers. In Sleeping Bag Gets Left Behind When Phased (October 4), a tester explains that if you place the bag and are then moved to another layer, the bag stays in the old layer, but your cooldown does not reset. You cannot place another one and must wait out the full hour. The poster suggests the bag should follow you, or the cooldown should reset.
  • Student Fodder says "Target is too low level." Several threads from October 2 and 3 report the item failing, including one at level 23, with no level requirement shown on the tooltip. A Wowhead commenter reported the same error at level 30, along with some other common consumables like Minor Arcane Elixir. That pattern points to a wider consumable bug rather than a Fodder-only one, but that is our inference, not a Blizzard statement.
  • Eagle's Fist not appearing. One September 25 forum post reports turning in the Loch Modan step and not receiving the next quest. Only one report, so it may have been a one-off.
  • Possible nerf. A creator video on October 4 titled "NERFS CONTINUE! Sleeping Bag Changes" has been circulating. WoW Forever Builds checked and could not confirm any change: the October 1 development notes do not mention the bag, there is no later blue post, and they did not find it in client data. Treat any claimed nerf as unconfirmed.
If you hit the layer bug, the practical workaround is simple: place the bag in a quiet spot where you are less likely to be moved between layers, and do not move off after placing it until you have all three stacks.

The Leveling Speed Argument

The sleeping bag would be a fun footnote if it had shown up in a different week. Instead, it landed right next to Blizzard's most direct statement yet about leveling pace. The October 1 development notes say:

"We appreciate the feedback on leveling speed as we continue ongoing discussions about the Beta. As part of those discussions, we've decided to reduce the amount of XP granted from dungeon quests with this release. Certain quest rewards have also been recalibrated."

The actual change: dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values. The same notes also adjusted Camping, including that campfires no longer damage players below level 5.

That is why the thread If XP is reduced to slow down leveling, why is sleeping bag in the game? has more heat than its length suggests. One camp wants dungeons to be harder instead of less rewarding. Another points out that food buffs, the sleeping bag, and Legacy Points all speed leveling up while the dungeon XP cut slows it down, and asks Blizzard for a clear statement of intent.

Our read: these are not actually in conflict. The dungeon change targets one specific pattern, chaining dungeon quests for outsized XP. The sleeping bag rewards a world-exploration questline and a few minutes of standing still. Both nudge players toward the open world. Whether the overall pace lands right is exactly what the remaining two weeks of beta are for.

What to Do on the Beta This Week

With October 21 as the last full day of testing, here is a sensible plan for the next sixteen days if you have access:

  • Do Kyle's Gone Missing! on a tauren or any Horde alt. It takes minutes, and if anything about it feels off (Kyle's pathing, drop rate, NPC voice lines), report it with the in-game bug tool. That quest is going to be run by a lot of people on November 4.
  • Run the sleeping bag chain once on each faction if you can. The Horde route feedback is useful to Blizzard. If you reproduce the layer bug or the Student Fodder level error, add your details to the existing threads instead of starting new ones.
  • Test the XP stack. Food plus bag plus rested plus Legacy, measured over a real hour of questing, is better feedback than forum math. Our Camping guide covers the campfire side of rested XP.
  • Push the level 30 content. Excavation Site: Wetlands, Razorfen Downs, and Uldaman are all open now.
  • Play your launch class at 30. Warriors especially should read the Build 70205 warrior changes before judging the class.
Blizzard's beta page describes everything as test characters on test realms, so treat what you earn as practice, not a head start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kyle's Gone Missing! in WoW: Forever?

Yes. Blizzard's October 1 beta development notes state, under Mulgore, that "The quest 'Kyle's Gone Missing!' has been added." It is live on the beta now and should ship with the game on November 4.

Who was Ezra Chatterton?

Ezra Chatterton, known in game as Ephoenix, was a young WoW fan who worked with Blizzard through Make-A-Wish in 2007 to create the quest. He voiced Ahab Wheathoof and created Kyle, Ahab's dog. He passed away in 2008, and the quest has been a memorial to him ever since.

Where do I start Kyle's Gone Missing!?

Talk to Ahab Wheathoof in Bloodhoof Village, Mulgore. Collect Tender Strider Meat from plainstriders, find Kyle the Frenzied running around the village, use the meat when he is close, and return to Ahab. Bloodhoof is a Horde town, and tester reports put the quest at around level 5.

Why was the quest not in Forever originally?

It was added during The Burning Crusade, not in the original 2004 game, and Forever builds from the original continents. Players asked for an exception on the forums, Kaivax replied "We're working on it" on September 28, and the quest was added on October 1.

How do I get the Cozy Sleeping Bag in WoW: Forever?

Start at the Burned-Out Remains in the Barrens (Horde) or Westfall (Alliance), then follow the chain through Stonetalon Mountains, the Loch Modan dam, and the top of the wall in Hillsbrad Foothills. Wowhead lists level 14 as the minimum, but Method recommends level 30 or higher for Horde because of the Alliance-territory legs.

What does the Cozy Sleeping Bag do?

Resting on it grants +1% experience per minute, up to +3%, and it stacks with the 5% food XP buff. It has a one-hour cooldown. Method reports the buff lasts an hour and that the bag works as a rested area for logging out; those details come from tester guides rather than official notes.

Does Student Fodder still give rested XP?

No. According to Wowhead, Student Fodder in Forever now heals you, restores some of your class resource, and applies Trail Snack (a brief 60% speed boost and a heal over time) instead of granting rested experience. Some testers also report a "Target is too low level" error when trying to use it.

Is the sleeping bag being nerfed?

Not confirmed. A creator video claimed changes, but WoW Forever Builds found no mention in Blizzard's October 1 notes, no later blue post, and no change in client data. Until Blizzard posts something, the bag works as described above.

When does the WoW: Forever beta end, and when is launch?

The beta runs through October 21, the last full day of testing. WoW: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC, 5:00 p.m. CST).

Final Thoughts

Forever has spent most of its beta under a microscope for what it changes: talents, Camping, Legacy Points, XP tuning. This week the two stories testers keep coming back to are about something else. One is a small quest in Bloodhoof Village that exists because a kid loved this game, and Blizzard bent its own rules to bring it home. The other is a sleeping bag that started a real debate about how fast the climb to 60 should feel.

Go find Kyle. Then go take a nap in Hillsbrad and file a bug report if your bag disappears into another layer. Both are useful ways to spend the last two weeks of beta.
