WoW Forever Excavation Site: Wetlands Dungeon Guide — Entrance, Bosses, Quests & Loot (Beta)
QUICK ANSWER · Excavation Site: Wetlands · Forever Beta
• What: Forever-original 5-player dungeon in Wetlands above Whelgar’s Excavation. Blizzard band 26–31; Wowhead recommends ~26–32 with last boss ~31.
• Bosses: Saltspine → Shadetooth (+2 Thicket Hunters) → Highland Horror (beta data still thin) → Relic Guardian (Archival Panel start).
• Route pain: Alliance via Menethil; Horde through Hillsbrad/Arathi; full wipes mean a long ghost run from the zone’s only graveyard.
• Context: Cap 30 build also opened Razorfen Downs (25+) and Uldaman (30+); dungeon-quest bonus XP is −50% this build.
• Beta caveat: quest tables, Highland Horror notes, and some loot rows are incomplete — flag anything that still says TBD in-game.

Excavation Site: Wetlands is the Forever-original dungeon that arrived with the level-cap-30 beta build. Our Oct 1 patch-notes guide covers the whole changelog: cap raise, dungeon-quest XP brake, honor retune, class dump. This article is the complementary dungeon manual — entrance, travel, bosses, quests, loot samples, and wipe etiquette — built from Wowhead’s Excavation Site overview, ForeverDB’s October 2 live-build summary, and Shacknews’ Week 3 beta roundup.

Forever is still in beta. Wowhead itself marks incomplete rows. If something below conflicts with your client, trust the client and file a bug.

What Excavation Site is trying to be

Wowhead’s story frame: the Explorer’s League has long worked the mountainous Wetlands around Whelgar’s Excavation Site, a raptor-overrun camp. Strange activity southeast of that site led to a new camp exploring freshly uncovered titan activity. In older Classic versions this pocket was inaccessible; Forever adds roads and a hilltop entrance.

That pitch matters for how you should test it. This is not “another RFK reskin.” It is the mid-band Forever dungeon Blizzard wants feedback on: pathing, boss pacing, quest density, and whether 26 feels early when the last boss sits around 31.

Level band

  • Blizzard / Shacknews / ForeverDB: dungeon listed at 26–31
  • Wowhead recommendation: about 26–32
  • Wowhead warning: you may be able to pick up some quests at 24, but entering that early is a bad idea because the last boss is level 31
Practical group composition for beta:
  • Ideal: four or five players in the high 20s, tank and healer not undergeared
  • Borderline: a fresh 26 carrying green quest rewards into Saltspine is fine; the same character into Relic Guardian is a gear check
  • Soft skip: if your healer is 25 and your DPS are 26, finish Razorfen Downs and outdoor Wetlands first

How to get there

Alliance

Alliance has the easy path. Menethil Harbor is the Wetlands hub. Wowhead notes Menethil now connects by boat with Stormwind through Auberdine, and you can also run on foot through Loch Modan. Most Alliance alts who have been questing Wetlands already have the flight path. From Menethil, climb to the new hilltop entrance above the Whelgar area.

Horde

Horde has the longer trek: through Hillsbrad Foothills and Arathi Highlands on foot into Wetlands. Wowhead’s advice is worth taking literally — grab flight paths in Tarren Mill and Hammerfall on the walk so the next run is less miserable. Do not form a Horde pug in Orgrimmar and discover mid-invite that nobody has Wetlands FP.

Meeting stone and entry

Wowhead describes a Meeting Stone at the entrance. Use it. Forever dungeon travel still punishes late replacements, and this zone punishes them harder than most.

Wipe runbacks hurt here

This is the single most important etiquette note in the dungeon.

Wetlands has one graveyard, and it is the infamous long run anyone who has ghosted from Teldrassil toward Ironforge already knows. If the entire group dies, you are running across a large chunk of the zone as ghosts before you re-enter. Wowhead’s advice:

  • Prefer a battle rez / rez if anyone is still alive — Priests, Druids, and Shamans learn resurrection early; Paladins may still need their quest
  • Only full-release when the wipe is actually complete
  • Budget time for the runback when you pull greedy packs before bosses
Soft CTA for beta testers: if the runback feels worse than Classic’s worst yards, say so in feedback. That is exactly the kind of Forever note Blizzard cannot get from a tooltip.

Boss order and strategies

ForeverDB’s datamine / notes list four bosses in order: Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror, and Relic Guardian. Wowhead currently has solid written strategy for Saltspine, Shadetooth, and Relic Guardian. Highland Horror coverage is still thin on the public overview — treat that boss as beta-sparse until Wowhead or your own pulls fill it in.

1) Saltspine

Wowhead calls this a simple fight if you clear nearby trash first.

Key abilities:

  • Tendon Rip on the tank — heavy slow, but it does not rewrite the fight plan
  • Dust Storm on targets within 10 yards, reducing chance to hit by 25%
Caster rule: do not stand in melee. Get outside the 10-yard Dust Storm range. Tank holds; melee watches positioning; ranged stays honest.

Prep checklist:

  • Clear the nearby pack so Dust Storm / Tendon Rip chaos does not chain into adds
  • Assign who calls the Dust Storm so casters step out immediately
  • If your group is underleveled, this is still the training-wheels boss — use it to calibrate healer mana before Shadetooth

2) Shadetooth (+ 2 Thicket Hunters)

Wowhead flags this as unforgiving when you ignore setup. Shadetooth comes with two Thicket Hunters. Fighting all three live is rough unless you are overleveled.

Add package:

  • Thicket Hunters apply Infected Wound — dispel it quickly
  • Adds can be crowd-controlled; Wowhead recommends either hard-CCing both while you kill Shadetooth, or CC one, kill the other, then finish the second
Once Shadetooth is alone:
  • Rend on the tank (moderate damage)
  • Terrifying Roar — a 5-second fear that cannot be dispelled
  • Enrage at 30% — slows and stuns help here; Wowhead notes the boss can be slowed and stunned
Fear is the wipe mechanic. Raptors lurk in bushes; getting feared into uncleared packs or grass spawns is how clean pulls turn into graveyard tourism. Wowhead’s mitigation:
  • Clear the crocodile cove to the left and fight there
  • Do not leave loose packs in fear paths
  • Note that Thicket Hunters cannot swim; using the previous boss area incorrectly can reset the encounter
Group jobs:
  • Tank: pick a cove position with your back to cleared ground
  • Healer: Infected Wound dispels first, then tank Rend healing
  • DPS: CC plan before pull, hard focus order, save stuns/slows for the 30% enrage
  • Everyone: no hero pulls through uncleared thicket

3) Highland Horror

ForeverDB confirms Highland Horror as the third boss in the client/boss list. Wowhead’s public overview, at the time we fetched it for this guide, did not yet include a full ability write-up comparable to Saltspine / Shadetooth / Relic Guardian. That is a beta documentation gap, not a reason to skip the boss.

What to do in beta when the guide is thin:

  • Pull with the same clear-first discipline you used for Shadetooth
  • Record abilities on the first pull (names, targeting, whether they are frontal / AoE / fear / summon)
  • Compare notes with your group before the second attempt
  • File feedback if the boss is overtuned relative to the 26–31 band
We are intentionally not inventing Highland Horror spell lists. When Wowhead or Blizzard publish a stable ability kit, update your personal notes; do not trust rumor spreadsheets over the client.

4) Relic Guardian

Start the fight by activating the Archival Panel on the right side of the inactive boss. Wowhead describes Relic Guardian as a gear and level check: high tank damage, large health pool.

Abilities called out:

  • Thunderclap on everyone within 10 yards — moderate damage plus heavy movement and attack-speed slow
  • Periodic knockback on the tank
  • Occasional 5-second stun on the tank
  • Boss can be stunned and slowed; nearby structures can help with kite spots
How groups fail this boss in beta:
  • Entering at 26 with greens and expecting a short burn
  • Healer sitting inside Thunderclap range and eating every slow
  • No stun plan for the tank’s 5-second lockouts
  • Ignoring the Archival Panel and wondering why the statue will not start
Bring consumables, kick/stun rotations, and honesty about ilvl. If Relic Guardian is brick-walling you, finish more Wetlands quests or run Razorfen Downs for intermediate upgrades first.

Quest list (beta-incomplete)

Wowhead’s quest tables are still marked for updates. Levels below are Wowhead’s listed quest levels (mostly 24 pickup band) with effort tiers described as Hard / Medium / At Level / Easy relative to character level. Side, effort, and share flags are incomplete on several rows — we only repeat what Wowhead shows.

Primal Gladiator elite armor — World of Warcraft account

Named quests from Wowhead

  • Changing Tastes — level 24; starts TBD on the table
  • Elder Knowledge — level 24; loot Titan Relic inside the dungeon; marked as a prerequisite chain starter
  • Earthen Echo — level 24; follow-up from Elder Knowledge
  • Open the Maw — level 24; Wowhead notes a Deathstalker Agent potentially outside the dungeon, possibly with a prerequisite, still TBD
  • Highland Hides — level 24; Wetlands / Menethil Harbor — James Halloran around `/way 8 55`; must complete Daily Delivery first
  • Songblade Search — level 24; Redridge Mountains — Dorin Songblade around `/way 25.6 46.6`
  • Horrors in the Highland — level 24; Wetlands — Rethiel the Greenwarden around `/way 56.2 40.6`
  • Lost in the Thicket Things — level 24; Wowhead table says it starts with Seeking Caitlin in Ashenvale from Llana (`/way 35.0 48.6`), but a Wowhead comment reports you can pick it up directly from Caitlin in Menethil Harbor without the Ashenvale detour — verify in your build
  • Heartwoven — level 24; follow-up from Lost in the Thicket Things
  • Lost Relic Carry — level 24; loot Titan Relic inside the dungeon
  • Prehistoric Prism — level 24; follow-up from Lost Relic Carry

How to use the quest list under the XP brake

Remember the companion patch-notes context: dungeon quests now grant 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values. Excavation Site quests are still worth doing for story, gear, and Titan Relic chain progress, but they are no longer a free rocket past outdoor Wetlands. Pair the dungeon with the outdoor hubs that feed it.

Sample loot (sourced names only)

Wowhead’s loot tables are partial. Only repeat named items they list:

Saltspine-adjacent samples

  • Cloth: Glinteye Slippers
  • Mail: Saltscale Girdle
  • Leather: Supple Bellyskin Leggings
Shadetooth-adjacent samples
  • Mail: Raptorclaw Greaves
  • Off-hand: Raptor’s Gaze
Relic Guardian / end samples
  • Quest item: Titan Relic
  • Ring: Ring of Power Regulation
  • Ranged: Golemsight Long Gun
  • Mail: Reliquary Mantle
No drop rates in this guide. Forever beta loot tables move. If an item is missing from your kill, assume incomplete data before assuming you are unlucky forever.

Trash and route notes

Wowhead currently says there is no trash mob of particular note documented yet, with the section reserved for future updates. That does not mean trash is free. Shadetooth’s fear paths make uncleared packs deadly even if no single mob has a famous ability name.

Route habits that save wipes:

  • Clear fear lines before Shadetooth
  • Do not skip the cove clear “to save time”
  • Watch for raptor grass spawns when the group fans out for herbs or chests
  • Keep a designated pull caller; Forever pugs die to three people tagging different packs

How this dungeon fits the Week 3 slate

From ForeverDB and Shacknews, the same build that shipped Excavation Site also:

  • Raised the beta cap to 30
  • Opened Razorfen Downs (25+) and Uldaman (30+)
  • Cut dungeon-quest bonus XP by 50%
  • Dropped a large class tuning pass, with a second Warrior follow-up later on October 2 (basic-attack crit Rage bonus raised from 75% → 100%, plus Fury/Protection talent moves)
Use Excavation Site as the Forever-specific mid test. Use RFD as the Classic-band warm-up. Use Uldaman as the “I actually hit 30” dungeon. For the full non-dungeon changelog, stay on the Oct 1 patch-notes article.

Short Warrior note (because it landed the same day)

If your tank or melee DPS is a Warrior, ForeverDB records a later October 2 pass: additional Rage from landing critical strikes increased to 100% (was 75%), Dual Wield Specialization hit-chance bug fixed, and another Fury/Protection talent reorganization (Lingering Rage, Furious Precision, Gore Drinker, row moves). That can change how hard Relic Guardian feels for Warrior tanks and Fury DPS between morning and evening beta sessions. Keep the focus on the dungeon, but do not ignore a same-day Rage buff when you are logging attempts.

Session plan: one good Excavation Site night

Before you queue / form

  • Be 26+, preferably higher for Relic Guardian
  • Grab every Wetlands / Redridge / Ashenvale lead-in quest you can share
  • Alliance: confirm Menethil FP and boat familiarity
  • Horde: confirm Tarren Mill / Hammerfall / Wetlands travel plan
  • Bring water, bandages, and class dispels for Infected Wound

Inside

  • Clear into Saltspine; learn Dust Storm spacing
  • Full cove clear before Shadetooth; lock CC on Thicket Hunters
  • Treat Highland Horror as a logged learning pull if guides are still thin
  • Archival Panel → Relic Guardian only when tank gear and healer mana are real
  • Loot Titan Relic for Elder Knowledge / Lost Relic Carry chains before you hearth out in a hurry

After

  • Turn in outdoor follow-ups the same session so the −50% dungeon-quest brake hurts less
  • Note one boss bug or pathing issue for Blizzard feedback
  • Decide whether tomorrow is RFD gear catch-up or Uldaman at 30

Frequently Asked Questions

What level should I enter Excavation Site: Wetlands?

Blizzard lists the dungeon at 26–31. Wowhead recommends about 26–32 and warns that the last boss is around level 31, so picking quests at 24 does not mean you should walk in at 24.

Where is the entrance?

In Wetlands, above the Whelgar’s Excavation area on a newly reachable hilltop. Alliance typically comes from Menethil Harbor; Horde generally approaches through Hillsbrad and Arathi.

Why is the wipe runback so bad?

Wetlands only has one graveyard, and it is a long ghost run from the dungeon. Prefer live rezzes when anyone is still up. Budget time if your group is learning Shadetooth fears.

What is the boss order?

Saltspine, Shadetooth (with two Thicket Hunters), Highland Horror, then Relic Guardian. Highland Horror’s public ability write-up was still thin when this guide was drafted — log the fight in beta instead of trusting unsourced ability lists.

How do you start Relic Guardian?

Activate the Archival Panel on the right side of the inactive boss. The fight is a tank-damage and health-pool gear check featuring Thunderclap, knockbacks, and tank stuns.

Which quests should I bring?

Wowhead currently lists Changing Tastes, Elder Knowledge / Earthen Echo, Open the Maw (TBD details), Highland Hides, Songblade Search, Horrors in the Highland, Lost in the Thicket Things / Heartwoven, and Lost Relic Carry / Prehistoric Prism. Several rows are still incomplete in beta.

Did dungeon quest XP get nerfed?

Yes, in the same cap-30 build: dungeon quests reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values. Still do the quests; just do not plan a dungeon-only rocket through the 20s.

What other dungeons opened with this build?

Razorfen Downs (25+) and Uldaman (30+), on top of the already-available classic-band list. Details and the broader patch are in our Oct 1 notes guide.

What loot can drop?

Sourced Wowhead samples include Glinteye Slippers, Saltscale Girdle, Supple Bellyskin Leggings, Raptorclaw Greaves, Raptor’s Gaze, Titan Relic, Ring of Power Regulation, Golemsight Long Gun, and Reliquary Mantle. Tables are partial; do not invent drop rates.

Is Forever still in beta, and when does it launch?

Yes. Week 3 beta content is live for testing. Broader launch context remains November 4, 2026, with the beta feedback window still pointed at late October in Blizzard’s earlier communications — see the pre-purchase / Nov 4 guide for pack and access details.
