Unholy Death Knight Guide — WoW Midnight Season 1

Why Unholy Sits in S-Tier
Unholy Death Knight is an S-tier melee DPS spec in WoW Midnight Season 1, combining pet management, plague cleave, and burst windows that cover every M+ pull pattern and most raid encounters. The Midnight redesign replaced Festering Wounds with cleaner Lesser Ghoul stacks, and the new Decaying Infection Apex Talent pushed Unholy from "good cleave spec" to "AoE monster that holds up on single-target."
The Midnight redesign replaced the old Festering Wounds mechanic with Lesser Ghouls stacked through Festering Strike. The change made the spec significantly cleaner — no more wound counter management, just clear stack tracking. Combined with the new Decaying Infection Apex Talent that spreads DoTs on pulse, Unholy went from "good cleave spec" to "AoE monster that holds up on single-target."
✓ High burst single-target damage inside Dark Transformation + Apocalypse
✓ Strong survivability — Anti-Magic Shell, Icebound Fortitude, Death Pact
✓ Scourge Strike operates at 30 yards — effective ranged pressure
✓ Anti-Magic Zone is a raid-wide magical absorb shield
✗ Punishes inattention — let plagues fall off and damage tanks immediately
✗ Pet uptime matters; losing the ghoul to mechanics is a major DPS loss
✗ Slightly weaker pure single-target than Demonology and Devourer DH
✗ Mediocre mobility before talenting into Death's Advance
How Do Unholy's Runes and Runic Power Work?
Unholy uses two parallel resources. The dance: spend Runes on damage → generate Runic Power → spend Runic Power before it caps. Repeat.

What Is the Unholy Single-Target Rotation?
How Does Unholy Handle AoE?
Unholy's AoE has changed significantly in Midnight. The spec leverages quadratic Epidemic damage combined with passive Scourge Strike cleave (up to 4-6 additional targets with talents).
Which Hero Talent Should Unholy Pick?
What Is the Decaying Infection Apex Talent?
If you're rerolling to Unholy specifically for Midnight, take Decaying Infection on your first build. It's the spec-defining Apex pick.
What Utility Does Unholy Bring to a Group?
When To Pick Unholy
- You want a melee plate DPS that contributes meaningful AoE
- You enjoy pet management without the complexity of Demonology
- You want strong self-sustain in solo and small-group content
- You like the visual fantasy of summoning undead at every burst window
When To Pick Something Else
- You want pure single-target priority → Devourer DH or Arcane Mage
- You hate plague management → Frost DK
- You want melee survivability over damage → Blood DK
- You want a forgiving rotation → Devourer DH
If you'd rather skip the gear grind and start pushing, accounts with pre-geared Unholy Death Knight mains and tuned Hero Talent builds are available. Boost services can also fast-track an existing Death Knight through the current tier.
