WoW Midnight Prey System: How It Works, Rewards, and the
Everything you need to run the Prey hunting system in Midnight — how to unlock it from Astalor Bloodsworn, how Anguish progress fills, the three difficulty…

What The Prey System Is

The Prey System is WoW Midnight's signature open-world feature: pick a target creature type each week, hunt them through the four new zones while doing regular content (world quests, rares, treasures), and earn stacking rewards including the Preyseeker mount family, battle pets, and Remnant of Anguish currency. Three difficulties (Normal, Heroic, Nightmare) scale rewards and unlock the final exclusive Preyseeker's Nightmare mount.

It's the cleanest open-world activity Blizzard has shipped in years. Everything you do in a Midnight zone counts toward something instead of feeling like filler.

How To Unlock It

Hit level 90 and finish the Voidstorm campaign. Then head to Murder Row in Silvermoon City and find Magister Astalor Bloodsworn. He runs a brief introductory questline that opens contracts for all four zones at once. From that point on, his contract board is your weekly Prey check-in.

You can pull contracts for Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, or Voidstorm. Each contract targets that zone's specific Prey boss, and you're capped at one hunt per difficulty per zone per week — so 12 active contracts maximum across the rotation.

How Does the Prey Hunt Loop Work?

After taking a contract, hunt progress fills passively as you do open-world content in the target zone. Every World Quest completion, every rare kill, every interacted treasure pushes the bar. Two zone-specific activity types fill the bar significantly faster:

  • Disarming traps the prey has set — these cause the prey to flee instantly to a new location, advancing the hunt
  • Defeating Coalesced Anguish enemies that spawn around you while a contract is active
There's also an ambush mechanic. Your prey will occasionally jump you mid-quest. Survive the ambush and a blood mist trail appears on the ground, leading toward the prey's current hideout. Following the trail and re-engaging adds significant progress.

Eventually Astalor reveals the boss's location, you summon the encounter, and the difficulty determines what kind of fight you're walking into.

What Are the Three Prey Difficulties?

NORMAL
Multiplayer · No mechanical penalties
Other players can join your fight. The prey has standard boss-tier abilities but no escalating difficulty. Death does not reset hunt progress. This is your weekly easy hunt — quick to clear, low risk.
HARD
Multiplayer · Torment + Seeping Gore + seasonal affixes
Torment — every application increases damage you take by 2%, and stacks ramp quickly during the chase. Seeping Gore — a damaging area appears beneath you in combat; move out or take additional ticks. Death reduces hunt progress, so wipes hurt. Each season also rotates additional affixes layered on top.
NIGHTMARE
SOLO ONLY · 4% Torment / 60s + Echo of Predation + Bloody Command
No grouping permitted. Torment stacks at +4% damage taken every 60 seconds you spend outside rested areas. Echo of Predation — a bloody spirit approaches you constantly; kite it or take massive damage on contact. Bloody Command — Astalor telepathically commands you to kill any creature, including critters, to avoid a stacking DoT. The combination forces sustained execution. Death resets significant progress.

The Nightmare tier is the design point everyone talks about. The Echo chasing you means you can never stand still. The Bloody Command means you have to actively scan the environment between mechanics. The Torment escalation means every minute spent fighting compounds the damage you're taking. It's the most difficult solo content Blizzard has shipped since Mage Tower's original Legion run, and it's what funnels players toward the prestige seasonal cosmetics.

What Rewards Come From Each Prey Difficulty?

Each tier pays gear of one quality category and contributes to your Great Vault one quality higher. The gear from the hunt itself is repeatable; the Vault contribution is once-per-week.

HardVeteran-trackChampion-track

Every successful hunt also pays out Dawncrests (Midnight's primary gear upgrade currency), Restored Coffer Key shards (an extra source for keys to Bountiful Delves), and Remnants of Anguish — the new seasonal currency you spend at the Prey vendor for cosmetics.

What Are the Preyseeker Mounts?

Three flagship mounts share the Preyseeker line — manawyrm models with progressively more elaborate corruption-themed visuals.

Preyseeker's Hubris
2,000 REMNANTS
The starter Preyseeker mount. Pure currency purchase from the Prey vendor in Silvermoon — no Nightmare clears required.
Preyseeker's Wrath
2,550 REMNANTS
The Hard-tier-themed recolor. Currency cost only modestly higher than Hubris — the upgrade is the visual prestige.
Preyseeker's Nightmare
NIGHTMARE GATED
Earned by defeating every Prey boss on Nightmare. The status mount of the system — if you see it on the field, the rider has cleared four Nightmare-tier solo encounters.

Pets and Housing Decor

Two pets and a 16-piece trophy collection round out the cosmetic catalog.

  • Lil' Preyseeker — 1,200 Remnants
  • Voldy — 800 Remnants
For housing, the system mints two trophy variants per Prey boss. Bust trophies (800 Remnants) drop from Hard-difficulty achievement kills; Effigy trophies (1,200 Remnants) drop from Nightmare-difficulty kills. Sixteen boss themes are paired with matching decor pieces, so a complete Prey-themed wall in your housing plot represents the full Hard or Nightmare clear set.

Strategy Notes

For the Hard tier, the Torment stacks make burst burn windows critical. Pop everything at the engage and try to drop the prey before stacks ramp past 6 or 7. If you can't kill before the Seeping Gore puddles overlap, you're fighting an uphill battle.

For Nightmare, the order of operations matters. Engage with full health and rested-area buffs active. Open with your highest-burst window. Track the Echo of Predation at all times — never let it close to melee range. When Bloody Command triggers, glance away from the boss for five seconds, find a critter, kill it, and rotate back. The fight rewards multitasking more than raw output.

Where Prey Fits Into Your Week

Most players slot Prey hunts into the Tuesday or Wednesday reset. The flow:

  • Take all 12 contracts at once (4 zones × 3 difficulties)
  • Run Normal first across all zones — quick clears, low pressure, baseline weekly currency
  • Run Hard hunts mid-week as you complete World Quests in those zones — the prey progress fills passively
  • Run Nightmare last when you've gathered consumables, food buffs, and a clear evening — these need attention
The Vault unlocks one Hero-track slot per week from the World tier slot if you complete a Nightmare hunt, which alone is worth the time investment for any player chasing item level.
