Shaman Guide — WoW MoP Classic
Complete MoP Classic Shaman guide covering Elemental, Enhancement, and Restoration at patch 5.4.8. Talents, rotations, stat priorities, Tier 16 set bonuses, and Siege of Orgrimmar gearing.
Shaman
Class Guide · WoW MoP Classic · Patch 5.4.8
The Shaman is MoP Classic's most versatile class. Whether you're launching Lava Burst from range, weaving melee strikes with Stormstrike procs, or laying down Healing Rain for a raid in peril, every Shaman spec contributes meaningful utility through totems, interrupts, and Bloodlust. This guide covers all three specs at patch 5.4.8 through the Siege of Orgrimmar.

What Makes Shaman Strong in MoP Classic?

Shaman entered Mists of Pandaria in excellent shape across all three specs. Elemental got a complete identity refresh around the Fulmination passive, stacking Lightning Shield charges for explosive Earth Shock bursts. Enhancement became one of the expansion's most engaging melee specs, layering Maelstrom Weapon procs with a fire-and-nature dual-strike toolkit. Restoration emerged as a top-two raid healer through the entirety of the expansion, anchored by one of the best smart-AoE kits in the game.

Beyond spec-specific power, every Shaman fills two universal slots: Bloodlust/Heroism (or the totem version, Stormlash Totem) and Wind Shear, one of the game's shortest-cooldown, lowest-GCD-cost interrupts. No MoP raid or serious PvP team goes without at least one Shaman. If you want to play a MoP Classic account that stays wanted across all content, Shaman is a top pick.

Strengths
✓ Bloodlust/Heroism: mandatory in every raid and key
✓ Wind Shear interrupt with short cooldown: best in class
✓ Three genuinely viable specs for PvE at 5.4.8
✓ Elemental: top-tier burst + mobile casting via Spiritwalker's Grace
✓ Enhancement: strong AoE cleave, self-sustain, burst windows
✓ Restoration: smartest group-healing kit in the expansion
✓ Totem utility: Healing Tide Totem is a near-wipe save
✓ Hex is one of MoP's cleanest CC options
Weaknesses
✗ Elemental single-target DPS lags behind some casters in pure patchwork
✗ Enhancement is weaker than top melee on pure single target
✗ Both DPS specs depend on maintaining multiple buffs simultaneously
✗ Mail armor identity means competing with Hunters for agility pieces
✗ Totem management adds cognitive overhead vs. simpler classes
✗ Restoration mana can run thin on very long heroic progression fights

Elemental Shaman — Ranged DPS

Elemental Shaman is a mail-wearing caster who channels the raw destructive power of lightning and fire at range. Its defining mechanic in MoP is Fulmination: a passive that turns Lightning Shield charges into a stacking damage bonus released through Earth Shock. Landing instant-cast Lava Burst procs from Lava Surge and timing Earth Shock at maximum Lightning Shield charges defines the spec's rhythm.

Elemental Signature Abilities

CORE NUKE · 8s CD
Always critically strikes a target afflicted by your Flame Shock. Lava Surge procs reset its cooldown and make it instant cast. Track these aggressively.
DoT / LAVA SURGE ENABLER
The DoT that makes the spec work. Each periodic tick has a chance to proc Lava Surge, resetting Lava Burst's cooldown. Never let it fall off your primary target.
FULMINATION DUMP
Consumes Lightning Shield charges via Fulmination. Cast at 6 or 7 charges for maximum burst. Holding too long wastes potential charge generation.
FILLER / SHIELD BUILDER
Primary filler when nothing else is available. Generates Lightning Shield charges via Rolling Thunder passive. Also the fallback for movement via Spiritwalker's Grace.
DPS COOLDOWN · 5-MIN CD
A powerful elemental companion that fights for you for 1 minute. Use on cooldown aligned with burn phases. Primal Elementalist talent gives you direct control.

Elemental Single-Target Rotation Priority

PriorityAbilityCondition
1Fire Elemental TotemUse on cooldown at the start of each burn window. Never hold it more than a few seconds.
2Flame ShockKeep active on the primary target at all times. Refresh before it drops on long boss fights.
3Lava BurstUse immediately when Lava Surge procs (instant cast), otherwise on cooldown while Flame Shock is up.
4Elemental BlastOn cooldown if talented. Hits hard and temporarily boosts a secondary stat, syncing well with burst phases.
5Earth ShockCast when Lightning Shield reaches 6-7 charges. The Fulmination damage spike is highest at near-max stacks.
6Lightning BoltFiller. Builds Lightning Shield charges via Rolling Thunder. Also available while moving if Spiritwalker's Grace is active.
AoE note: Swap to Chain Lightning once three or more targets are grouped. Apply Flame Shock to a secondary target to enable Lava Burst procs on cleave pulls. Earthquake becomes a viable filler on five or more tightly stacked enemies.

Elemental Stat Priority

OrderStatNotes
1IntellectPrimary stat. Scales all damage, spell power, and crit chance. Always stack.
2Hit/Spirit to 15% capSpell hit cap is 15%. Spirit counts toward this via Elemental Precision. Cap before anything else.
3MasteryMastery: Fulmination increases Lightning Shield charge damage consumed by Earth Shock. Strong throughput gain once hit-capped.
4HasteReduces Lightning Bolt cast time and increases tick rate of Flame Shock, enabling more Lava Surge procs.
5Critical StrikeLava Burst always crits regardless, so Crit contributes mainly to Lightning Bolt and Earth Shock.

Enhancement Shaman — Melee DPS

Enhancement Shaman is one of MoP's most satisfying melee specs. It dual-wields weapons, accumulates Maelstrom Weapon stacks from rapid attacks, then unleashes instant-cast spells at five stacks. The rotation layers physical strikes with elemental procs: Stormstrike, Lava Lash, and a cascade of Windfury Weapon and Flametongue Weapon triggers keeping the GCDs perpetually full.

Enhancement Signature Abilities

PRIMARY STRIKE · 8s CD
Dual physical hits that debuff the target to take increased Nature damage. Always cast on cooldown. It is your highest-priority button when available.
OFF-HAND STRIKE · 10s CD
Hits with your off-hand, deals fire damage, and spreads Flame Shock to nearby enemies. Massive AoE upside on multi-target pulls. Cast on cooldown.
PASSIVE STACK MECHANIC
Stacks from auto-attacks and physical strikes. At 5 stacks, your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Healing Surge becomes instant and costs no cast time. The heartbeat of the spec.
WEAPON BUFF UNLEASH · 15s CD
Unleashes your Flametongue and Windfury Weapon enchants for an immediate damage hit. Unlocks a damage buff for subsequent attacks. Use on cooldown.
BURST COOLDOWN · 3-MIN CD
Summons two Spirit Wolves that attack alongside you for 30 seconds. The wolves also heal you for a percentage of their damage dealt. Enhancement's main DPS cooldown.

Enhancement Rotation Priority

PriorityAbilityCondition
1Feral SpiritPop on cooldown, ideally with Bloodlust/Heroism active. The wolves are your largest DPS window.
2StormstrikeAlways on cooldown. The Nature debuff it applies boosts your next spells significantly.
3Flame ShockMaintain on the target. Lava Lash spreads it to nearby enemies, which is critical for AoE.
4Lava LashOn cooldown. Spreads Flame Shock to up to four nearby targets. Your primary AoE driver.
5Unleash ElementsOn cooldown. If Unleashed Fury is talented, this unlocks a damage amp for subsequent hits.
6Lightning Bolt (at 5 stacks)Spend Maelstrom Weapon at 5 stacks. Use Chain Lightning on two or more targets instead.
MoP Challenge Mode armor set — WoW MoP Classic account

Enhancement Stat Priority

OrderStatNotes
1AgilityPrimary stat. Scales physical damage, crit chance, and attack power. Gem for it.
2Hit/Expertise to 7.5%Both caps sit around 7.5%. Hit prevents spell misses; Expertise prevents melee dodges and parries. Cap both first.
3MasteryMastery: Enhanced Elements boosts elemental damage, a large share of Enhancement's damage budget.
4HasteFaster auto-attacks mean more Maelstrom Weapon stacks and more weapon imbue procs.
5Critical StrikeUseful but falls behind Mastery and Haste for most Enhancement builds at 5.4.8.

Restoration Shaman — Healer

Restoration Shaman is the group-healing specialist of MoP Classic. The toolkit centres on smart AoE heals that land where healing is needed most. Healing Rain saturates a ground zone with steady throughput, Chain Heal bounces between nearby injured players, and Riptide gives you an instant HoT to toss on the move while generating Tidal Waves stacks that empower your next two direct heals.

Restoration Signature Abilities

PRIMARY AoE HEAL
Heals the target and bounces to up to five injured nearby allies. 25% bonus healing when your primary target has an active Riptide HoT.
INSTANT HoT · 6s CD
Instant-cast burst heal followed by a short HoT. Generates Tidal Waves stacks and makes the target eligible for the Chain Heal bonus. Keep on cooldown.
AoE ZONE HEAL · 10s CD
Targets a ground area that steadily heals all allies standing inside for 10 seconds. Best value when five or more players stack. Pair with Unleash Elements for an upfront burst.
RAID SAVE · 3-MIN CD
Drops a totem that pulses massive heals to the five lowest-health party/raid members over 10 seconds. Near-wipe recovery. Possibly the strongest sustained group cooldown in the game during MoP.
DAMAGE REDISTRIBUTION · 3-MIN CD
Equalises health percentages across all linked players every second for 6 seconds. Prevents a single target from dying during spike damage. A unique, powerful raid-saving cooldown.

Restoration Healing Priorities

The MoP Restoration Loop
  • Maintain Earth Shield on the active tank at all times.
  • Keep Riptide on cooldown. The Tidal Waves stacks it generates make your next Healing Wave or Greater Healing Wave significantly stronger and faster.
  • Drop Healing Rain whenever the raid stacks and significant group damage is incoming. Precasting it before a mechanic pays off far more than casting it reactively.
  • Cast Chain Heal for group damage, preferring a Riptide-active target as the bounce anchor.
  • Use Greater Healing Wave or Healing Wave for single-target tank healing, leveraging Tidal Waves stacks to reduce cast time.

Restoration Stat Priority

OrderStatNotes
1IntellectPrimary stat. Scales all healing, mana pool, and mana regeneration. Always gem/enchant for it.
2SpiritDrives mana regeneration. Stack until your mana feels comfortable for the fight length.
3Haste (breakpoints)Reaching specific Haste breakpoints adds extra Chain Heal and Healing Rain ticks. Identify your target breakpoint and stop there.
4MasteryMastery: Deep Healing scales healing inversely with target health. Strongest when people are low. Excellent for reactive/raid healing.
5Critical StrikeLowest priority for most Restoration builds. Ancestral Awakening (passive) procs from healer crits and marginally improves its value.

How Do MoP Talents Work for Shaman?

MoP introduced a complete redesign: all three Shaman specs share the same six-tier talent tree, with three choices per tier. Talents are pure customisation. They don't change your spec's identity; they refine how you play it. Tiers unlock at levels 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90.

Tier 1 (Level 15) — Survival
Nature's Guardian: passive proc that heals and reduces enemy threat when your health drops below 35%.

Stone Bulwark Totem: drops a totem that absorbs damage for you and nearby allies.

Astral Shift: 40% damage reduction for 6 seconds on a short cooldown. Top PvE defensive choice for all specs.
Tier 2 (Level 30) — CC
Frozen Power: Frost Shock roots the target when it hits outside of 15 yards.

Earthgrab Totem: periodic-root totem on a 30s CD. Strong in PvP; occasionally handy in PvE for kiting.

Windwalk Totem: clears movement-impairing effects from nearby allies. Excellent PvP pick.
Tier 3 (Level 45) — Totems
Call of the Elements: resets one totem's cooldown on a 3-minute CD. Strong for Spirit Link / Healing Tide double-usage.

Totemic Persistence: allows two totems of the same element to co-exist. Enables some niche double-totem setups.

Totemic Projection: teleports your active totems to a new location. Niche but situationally useful for repositioning.
Tier 4 (Level 60) — Haste/Throughput
Elemental Mastery: on-use that grants a large temporary Haste boost. Best for burst-window DPS specs and throughput healers.

Ancestral Swiftness: passive 5% Haste increase. Solid for Enhancement, competitive for Restoration.

Echo of the Elements: chance to duplicate certain spells for free. Interesting but inconsistent in practice.
Tier 5 (Level 75) — Healing Utility
Rushing Streams: Healing Stream Totem heals two targets at once. Strong passive healing upside for Restoration.

Ancestral Guidance: converts 40% of damage and healing into additional healing for five targets for 10 seconds. High-value CD for all specs.

Conductivity: heals and offensively-used Healing Rain extends its duration. Niche but powerful when Healing Rain is central to your strategy.
Tier 6 (Level 90) — Signature Power
Unleashed Fury: Unleash Elements now amplifies your next offensive/healing spell. Wide-use for all specs.

Primal Elementalist: gives you full control over summoned elementals plus buffs to their abilities. Pairs well with Elemental DPS and Enhancement burst windows.

Elemental Blast: a powerful casted nuke that also provides a temporary secondary stat buff. Top pick for Elemental DPS single-target throughput.
Recommended talent snapshots: Elemental — Astral Shift / Earthgrab / Call of the Elements / Elemental Mastery / Ancestral Guidance / Elemental Blast. Enhancement — Astral Shift / Earthgrab / Call of the Elements / Ancestral Swiftness / Ancestral Guidance / Unleashed Fury. Restoration — Astral Shift / Windwalk Totem / Call of the Elements / Elemental Mastery / Rushing Streams / Unleashed Fury.

What Are the Best Glyphs for Shaman?

MoP's Major Glyphs fill meaningful gameplay roles; many are practically mandatory. Minor Glyphs are purely cosmetic or quality-of-life.

SpecMajor GlyphsWhy
ElementalGlyph of Lightning Shield, Glyph of Flame Shock, Glyph of Healing Stream TotemLightning Shield buffs passive Fulmination value; Flame Shock extension prevents refresh downtime; Healing Stream improves raid contribution.
EnhancementGlyph of Lightning Shield, Glyph of Fire Nova, Glyph of Feral SpiritLightning Shield is effectively required; Fire Nova amplifies AoE via Flame Shock spreads; Feral Spirit extends wolf cooldown for more uptime.
RestorationGlyph of Healing Stream Totem, Glyph of Riptide, Glyph of ChainingHealing Stream Totem glyph adds a resistance aura. Riptide glyph removes the HoT portion but enables re-casting without CD. Chaining increases Chain Heal bounce distance.

How Do You Gear for Siege of Orgrimmar?

Siege of Orgrimmar (Phase 5) is where Shaman Tier 16 lives. All three specs have their own Tier 16 set. The Regalia/Battlegear/Vestment of Celestial Harmony sets each carry 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses that meaningfully change how each spec plays.

Tier 16 Set Bonuses

Elemental — Regalia of Celestial Harmony
2-piece: Fulmination increases all Fire and Nature damage that target takes from your spells for a few seconds per Lightning Shield charge consumed. Strong synergy with the Flame Shock-Lava Burst loop.

4-piece: Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning gain a chance to summon a Lightning Elemental to fight alongside you. Adds consistent burst upside on top of Fire Elemental Totem windows.
Enhancement — Battlegear of Celestial Harmony
2-piece: For 10 seconds after Unleash Elements, your attacks have a chance to unleash a random weapon imbue. Extra burst during Unleash Elements windows, with fire and nature procs layering on top of your normal attacks.

4-piece: When Flame Shock deals periodic damage, you have a 5% chance to reset Lava Lash's cooldown. Increases burst windows especially on packed AoE pulls where Flame Shock is spreading.
Restoration — Vestment of Celestial Harmony
2-piece: When Earth Shield heals its target, a portion of that healing is converted into an absorb shield on the tank. Turns a passive HoT into a passive absorb-on-top, freeing you to focus output elsewhere.

4-piece: Spiritwalker's Grace also summons a spirit duplicate that mirrors all your targeted healing spells for its duration. Effectively doubles throughput during Spiritwalker's Grace windows. Exceptional on movement-heavy heroic encounters.

Legendary Cloak

The legendary cloak questline (the Wrathion chain) is the defining character progression of MoP Classic. Completing it grants you Xing-Ho, Breath of Yu'lon (caster/healer) or Gong-Lu, Strength of Xuen (agility) depending on your spec. Both are Legendary-quality back pieces with powerful on-use proc effects. Running SoO Heroic without the legendary cloak is a significant personal performance handicap. Prioritise the questline.

Valor and Reputation Gearing

Beyond tier tokens, SoO progression unlocks Valor Points used to purchase item-level upgrades for existing gear and select vendor pieces. Reputation with Shado-Pan Assault (earned inside Throne of Thunder and SoO) unlocks powerful ring, trinket, and neck pieces on a VP-purchasable vendor. Exhaust your weekly Valor cap and keep Shado-Pan Assault at Revered or higher to fill non-tier slots efficiently.

PvE vs PvP: Where Does Shaman Excel?

PvE Viability
Restoration is an S-tier raid healer through all of MoP. Spirit Link Totem and Healing Tide Totem are irreplaceable defensive tools that raid leaders specifically compose around.

Elemental sits comfortably in the A range for raid DPS. It shines on multi-target fights where Chain Lightning cleave and Lava Lash Fire Shock spreads add up. Burst-phase output around Fire Elemental Totem is strong.

Enhancement is a capable raid DPS with excellent AoE, though it lags behind the top melee specs on pure single-target fights.
PvP Viability
Restoration is among the best Arena healers in MoP, prized for burst throughput, the Hex crowd control, Grounding Totem to eat key spells, and Tremor Totem to break fear chains.

Elemental has standout PvP burst through Lava Burst (always crits with Flame Shock up) and Hex CC. The Spiritwalker's Grace passive allows casting on the move, a rarity that matters enormously in Arena.

Enhancement is a viable PvP spec with strong on-demand burst through Ascendance and sustained pressure from Maelstrom Weapon. Works well in 2v2 and RBGs.

FAQ

What is the best leveling spec for Shaman in MoP Classic? Enhancement is the fastest and most enjoyable leveling spec. Dual-wield melee with Maelstrom Weapon self-heals means you can pull multiple mobs and sustain through most content without downtime. Elemental works if you prefer ranged, but the cast-heavy style slows momentum at lower gear levels.

Does Shaman bring Bloodlust in MoP Classic? Yes. All three Shaman specs bring Bloodlust (Horde) or Heroism (Alliance) interchangeably. Same effect, different name. You also gain access to Stormlash Totem in MoP, a separate raid-wide attack-speed buff that stacks independently. Every serious raid and Mythic progression group wants at least one Shaman.

What weapons should Enhancement Shaman use? Enhancement performs best with two one-handed agility weapons. Windfury Weapon goes on your main hand for the proc value and Flametongue Weapon on the off-hand to enable Lava Lash fire damage scaling. Prioritise weapon item level heavily. Slow main-hand weapons (2.6 speed) produce higher Windfury hit values.

How important is the legendary cloak questline for Shaman? Very important for all three specs. The Wrathion legendary cloak questline progresses through all MoP phases and culminates in a Legendary-quality cloak at item level 600+ in Phase 5. The proc effect (a burst of elemental damage for DPS, a burst of healing for Restoration) activates frequently and adds meaningful throughput. Starting the questline immediately in each new phase is strongly recommended.

Is Restoration Shaman required in raids? While no single class is mechanically required, Restoration Shaman is among the most desired healers for SoO progression. Spirit Link Totem redistributes health percentages to prevent wipes on spike mechanics, Healing Tide Totem is one of the strongest raw group-save cooldowns in the game, and the Tier 16 4-piece (spirit duplicate during Spiritwalker's Grace) creates moments of exceptional throughput. Many Heroic raid teams compose specifically for these tools.

Can Elemental Shaman cast while moving in MoP? More than any other caster class. Spiritwalker's Grace (a 6-second active that allows free movement casting) is baseline for all Shaman specs. During its window, Elemental can fire full-rotation casts while dodging mechanics. Additionally, Lava Surge procs make Lava Burst instant and free to use during movement. Elemental is one of the most mobile ranged DPS specs in the expansion.
