Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is five days from the first campaign boots on the ground. If you pre-ordered digitally, the story unlocks on Friday, October 16, DMZ opens on Tuesday, October 20, and everyone else gets the full game on Friday, October 23, 2026. Activision and Infinity Ward have spread an enormous amount of information across a dozen blog posts, a support page and the store listings, and a few of the details quietly disagree or are buried. This guide pulls it into one place, flags what is still unannounced, and gives you a plan for the next two weeks.
Everything below comes from Activision's own Call of Duty blog, the Activision Support editions page (dated October 9) and the Steam and Xbox store listings, with the sources linked in the Quick Answer. Where something is only my read of the official wording, I say so. If you want a look at another big shooter that just reset its schedule, the Battlefield 6 Season 5 launch guide covers EA's side of the October calendar.
The Dates That Matter, Converted to Central Time
Activision lists every early access date in Pacific Time and adds the usual disclaimer that actual play time is subject to possible outages and time zone differences. That means the calendar below is solid, but the hour is not. Call of Duty updates traditionally land at 9 AM PT, which is 11 AM CT, and Dot Esports uses that as a countdown target, but I could not find Activision saying so for this launch. Treat 11 AM CT as an educated guess for the early access unlocks, not a promise. The only hour Activision has put in writing is the PC preload, 9 AM PT on October 15.
One quirk worth knowing: the PC specs post says the full game releases at midnight local time on October 23. That is how Call of Duty has handled recent launches, and it matters if you plan to stay up. Early access for the campaign is a separate gate, and it does not appear to be tied to midnight at all.
Who Actually Gets Early Access
Both early access windows are pre-order bonuses, and the wording is consistent across the posts. Campaign Early Access applies to players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition. Activision's June 12 post names every platform: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. DMZ Early Access, per the Activision Support page, is open to "any digital edition on any platform."
The physical edition is where it gets murky. The editions blog says physical pre-orders get a Beta Code at retail for the Open Beta, and the early access posts only ever say "digitally pre-ordered." I read that as physical buyers waiting until October 23, but Activision has not written a sentence that says so outright. If you are about to buy a disc, I would assume no early access and check the retailer listing.
There are two more eligibility traps. First, the Support page says Campaign and DMZ early access start dates differ, so unlocking one does not unlock the other. Second, Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch, so Game Pass subscribers do not get a free path in. Game Pass only matters for the loyalty discount, which I cover below.
Editions, Prices and the Loyalty Discount
Three editions exist: Digital Standard, Digital Vault and a Physical Standard for Xbox Series X and PS5 (no physical PC edition, and no physical Vault). Activision's own posts do not print the base prices. The Steam store data lists $69.99, and the Xbox store FAQ states the Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Vault Edition is $99.99, with a $30 upgrade between them. Activision Support confirms the $30 Suggested Retail Price for the upgrade.
The Vault Edition is the one with the long list. Here is the breakdown from the Activision Support page, which is newer than the May editions blog and has the most precise wording:
The 10% Loyalty Discount is on the Vault Edition only. By my math it brings the $99.99 sticker to roughly $90, but check your storefront because Activision says the discount is "based on MSRP." To qualify you must have owned and played a qualifying title on the same platform account you use to pre-order. The qualifying list is Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020), Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III (2023), Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC subscribers qualify if they actually played one of those titles through the service, and PlayStation Plus Monthly Games claims count too.
Two catches matter. The discount is valid on pre-orders and pre-purchases only, through October 23, 2026, and it does not apply to Vault upgrades. If you buy Standard now and upgrade later, you pay the full $30. If you are leaning Vault, buy Vault before launch or accept that the discount is gone.
The pre-order extras that come with every digital edition are worth a quick note. The Hunter Killer Operator Skin unlocks instantly in Black Ops 7 and Warzone and shows up in Modern Warfare 4 at launch, and it must be redeemed by October 23, 2027. The Gilded Pearl camo pack and the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint are also included. The Inner Circuit blueprint looks different by platform: a translucent OG Green treatment for Xbox Series X|S players, a mil-spec treatment elsewhere, and Activision says both are functionally identical.
PC Players: Preload, Requirements and the Security Checklist
If you are on PC, October 15 is your first real task. Digital PC pre-purchasers can preload starting 9 AM PT (11 AM CT) on Battle.net, Steam or Xbox on PC. Preloading does not let you play early, and the official wording on this is blunt: the Campaign still opens on October 16. The same post tells you to install the Xbox PC app ahead of time on any platform if you want Advanced Shader Delivery, which pre-compiles shaders at install and during live updates so the game launches faster.
The requirements are fairly forgiving at the bottom and demanding at the top. The big number is storage: 115 GB on an SSD for every tier. A hard drive does not meet the minimum.
Beenox and Infinity Ward are targeting 90 FPS at the recommended spec without manual tweaking. The post lists 800+ options across graphics, gameplay, input and interface, plus upscalers (NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X), ray tracing in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, a built-in benchmark tool that runs a simulated multiplayer sequence and reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency, and sub-frame mouse polling for aim precision. PC-only extras include Enhanced FOV, which uses a lens effect to widen the edges of the image without changing the center, and HDR10+ support.
The security side is what trips people up. Activision requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot on PC, and says other measures may be enforced under its RICOCHET Anti-Cheat, along with 2FA and email verification for account security. A mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may also be required to play. If your PC does not have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot switched on in the BIOS, fix that before launch week, not on October 16.
One more official detail affects everyone: to deliver the highest-quality visuals while cutting install size, Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes. Activision's Support FAQ says that means you need a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer (including Private Matches) and DMZ. It does not say the same about the Campaign, so I would not assume the campaign is offline-capable, and I would not assume it is not. Activision has not spelled it out.
The Campaign: Park, Price and the Archer
The Campaign is what the early access window is built around, and Activision has been careful about spoilers. The setup is that North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea. You play Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier in his first live combat, fighting alongside his squad through collapsing cities and counteroffensives. The first big mission is the invasion of Hajin City.
On a parallel track, Captain John Price is an operator turned outlaw after assassinating General Shepherd at the end of Modern Warfare III. Task Force 141 has been disbanded, Ghost questions Price's methods, and Ghost and Gaz are tasked to capture or kill their former captain, per the September 17 campaign trailer post. Price teams up with Valeria Garza of the Las Almas cartel, and CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell stays in touch with him. A weapon of war is being moved toward a villain known only as "The Archer."
Activision lists the campaign's range as trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, high-speed chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and a city-wide assault to reclaim occupied territory. Those line up with several multiplayer map names (Mumbai, Lotus, Rooftops) which is a nice touch. The beta also included a campaign mission called "Entrenched," and Activision describes the campaign as combined-arms warfare with cinematic set pieces.
If you have skipped the rebooted trilogy, Activision published a "Story So Far" recap on September 16 covering Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III. It also has a "Narrative Recap" link on the official hub. The recap is dense with spoilers for the earlier games, so read it only if you actually want them.
Activision has not published a campaign length, and I will not guess one. It has said the full movement set (mantling, sliding, climbing) is available in the campaign too, so the traversal changes below apply there as well.
Multiplayer: What Changes When You Pick Up a Gun
Multiplayer is built around what Infinity Ward calls Ballistic Authority: no bloom, no guesswork. Hipfire shots go where the weapon is pointed, bullets leave from the barrel position, recoil and convergence were rebuilt to respond more directly to your input, and weapon and environment are rendered at the same field of view. Muzzle effects are dynamically masked at the point of aim so smoke does not hide your target, and depth of field in PC is split into separate World and Weapon settings.
Movement got the other half of the redesign. The August 21 post lists Mantle Slide (go from a mantle straight into a slide), Mantle Momentum, Mantle Steering (steer, ADS or abort mid-mantle), Supine Slide (double-tap crouch while sprinting for a long low slide), Pipe Climb and Fast Pipe Slide, Hang Shimmy, Hang Lean and Climbing Jump. Activision says these movement tools work across Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, and that a movement training course exists at launch.
Loadouts are rebuilt as well. Create-a-Class now folds Operators, weapons, equipment, perks and killstreaks into a single loadout. Gunsmith attachments are shared by weapon class, and a new helper called Gunny assembles short-range, long-range or balanced builds from the attachments you have unlocked. At launch the post lists 33 weapons (24 primary, 8 secondary, one melee), 28 Apex Attachments, 500+ standard attachments, 17 killstreaks, 18 perks (a Pick 3 system), 11 field upgrades, plus 9 tacticals and 11 lethals. Apex Attachments unlock when you fully level a weapon and add special behavior, like the Kastov Arc RF pulse barrel in the Vault pack.
New toys include Trip Wire, Smoke Wall (a smoke drone that leaves a navigable smoke trail), Razor Wire, a destructible Riot Shield that is now a field upgrade, and the Bomb Glider killstreak, a throwable plane you pilot directly. Killstreaks are now Smartstreaks, earned by kills and by playing the objective, with kills still the main driver.
Prestige also splits in two. Classic Prestige resets your Create-a-Class unlocks in exchange for faster XP and exclusive rewards. Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 but keeps your loadout unlocks and gives a smaller reward set.
Launch ships with 12 Core 6v6 maps, plus Gunfight arenas, large-scale Ground War maps and Kill Block, a modular training facility that reconfigures between rounds from three sections (two outer areas and one central space) for 500+ configurations. The beta's Combat Outpost maps were Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium, both set in DMZ's Hajin.
Only six of the twelve were in the beta, so Coal, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92 and Sentry will be brand new to everyone on launch day. Activision notes the list reflects content still in development, so names and details could shift.
Collateral deserves a mention for competitive players. Teams alternate attacking and defending two bomb sites, everyone starts with a pistol, and you earn cash for kills and objective play to spend between rounds on armor, perks, equipment, pistols and weapons up to Tier 1 rifles. If you die you lose your loadout, though earned money carries over, and respawns, killstreaks, health regeneration and custom loadouts are all disabled.
DMZ: Hajin, the FOB and Early Access on October 20
DMZ is Call of Duty's extraction mode, and Modern Warfare 4's version drops you into Hajin, a persistent open-world map along the Korean border. Squads deploy into the exclusion zone as off-the-books assets recovering military technology, loot containers, complete objectives, fight AI forces and rival operators, and try to extract with whatever they can carry.
Between runs you return to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), which grows from a foothold into a base with more than a dozen stations: Operators (Active Duty), Stash and Loadout, DMZ Orders, Firing Range, Survival Kits, 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, Bounty Leaderboard, Boss Board, Dog Tag Case, DMZ Progression and Deploy. DMZ has its own player progression from Level 1 to 70, and each Operator also levels separately through Dog Tag quality, earning Trait Points (18 of them for a fully leveled Operator). Once an Operator is fully leveled you can Prestige it for a permanent random Prestige Trait, up to three per Operator.
You start with two Active Duty Operator slots, unlock a third by progressing, and Vault Edition owners begin with three. Hajin has Lieutenants and roaming Commanders as bosses, a Threat Level system that rises as you fight and calls in reinforcements (break contact and take cover to bring it down), and vehicles across ground, rail, water and air. Activision names 13 major locations, including the 14th Political Prison and Chang-san Air Base.
The practical read for early access: DMZ opens on October 20, three days before everyone else, but only for digital pre-orders. If you plan to play DMZ with friends, make sure everyone in the squad has pre-ordered or you will be waiting until October 23 anyway. Activision has not announced a cross-play or squad-size policy beyond "solo or with a squad" in the pages I read, and I could not find it, so confirm in-game.
Warzone, Black Ops 7 and the Legacy Tie-Ins
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 and Warzone Season 1 follows "shortly after," with no exact date published. Season 1 is when Warzone integrates Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression, and when two new Warzone maps are due: Zodiac, a Resurgence map by Beenox, and Hajin as a Battle Royale map.
There are three platform consequences. First, Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One stops being playable from Season 1, and the in-game store on those platforms was removed June 25. Second, a new Operator Skin toggle in Warzone (off by default) lets you swap other players' non-Modern Warfare 4 Operators for Modern Warfare 4 ones on your screen, without changing what you see on yourself. Third, Operators, Operator Skins and Weapon Blueprints from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 stay available in Warzone, and each legacy weapon gets a five-attachment version unlockable through the Armory. Activision issued a correction that legacy weapon camos are not included.
Nintendo Switch 2
Modern Warfare 4 is built natively for Switch 2 by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends, and it is Call of Duty's return to a Nintendo platform in over a decade. Switch 2 pre-orders began August 26, and the beta supported Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro, the Pro Controller, HDR and handheld play, with cross-play and cross-progression. The June 12 early access post lists Switch 2 among the platforms for Campaign Early Access, and Activision's Support page says a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required for social features and online modes on that console. The same page confirms split-screen multiplayer on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 and does not list Switch 2 for it.
Your Pre-Launch Checklist
- Decide on the edition now. If you want Vault and the 10% loyalty discount, buy Vault before October 23. The discount does not carry over to upgrades.
- Check eligibility. The discount needs a qualifying title played on the same platform account, and early access needs a digital pre-order.
- PC players: check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in BIOS, free up 115 GB of SSD space, install the Xbox PC app if you want Advanced Shader Delivery, and update your graphics drivers.
- Preload on October 15 at 11 AM CT if you are on PC. Console preload dates were not in the posts I read, so watch your platform's pre-load tab.
- Plan your connection. Multiplayer and DMZ need a constant internet connection because of texture streaming.
- Squad up for October 20. Everyone who wants DMZ early access has to have pre-ordered digitally.
- Redeem Hunter Killer and the Gilded Pearl camos in Black Ops 7 or Warzone before the October 23, 2027 deadline.
What Is Still Unknown
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access start?
Campaign Early Access starts on Friday, October 16, 2026, for players who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition. Activision lists the date in Pacific Time and has not published an exact hour, so the unlock could come at midnight PT or later in the day. If Call of Duty's traditional 9 AM PT habit holds, that would be 11 AM CT, but that is an assumption.
When does Modern Warfare 4 release?
The full game releases on Friday, October 23, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC) and Nintendo Switch 2. The PC specs post says it unlocks at midnight local time. It is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
When does DMZ Early Access start?
DMZ Early Access starts on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases of any edition on any platform. That is separate from Campaign Early Access, which starts October 16, so you do not get DMZ just because the campaign is open.
How much does Modern Warfare 4 cost?
The Standard Edition is $69.99 on Steam and Xbox, and the Vault Edition is $99.99 according to the Xbox store listing. Upgrading from Standard to Vault later costs $30 (suggested retail price). Prices in other regions will differ, and Activision's own blog posts only state the $30 upgrade figure.
Can you preload Modern Warfare 4?
PC players who pre-purchase digitally can preload starting Thursday, October 15 at 9 AM PT, which is 11 AM CT. Preloading does not unlock the game early. I could not find an official console preload date or install size in Activision's posts, so check your console's store page.
What are the PC system requirements for Modern Warfare 4?
Minimum is Windows 10, a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600, 8 GB of RAM, a Radeon RX 470, GTX 970 or GTX 1060 (or Arc A580) and 3 GB of video memory. Recommended for 90 FPS in multiplayer on High is Windows 11, a Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700K, 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6600 XT or Arc B580. Every tier needs 115 GB on an SSD, plus TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.
Does Modern Warfare 4 need an internet connection?
Activision Support says Multiplayer (including Private Matches) and DMZ require a continuous internet connection because the game uses texture streaming. The page does not say whether the Campaign can be played offline, so do not assume either way until Activision clarifies.
What is in the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition?
The Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost, Blix), the Special Forces Operator Pack (COM SFT, KSK Amphibious, South Korean Special Forces, SAS), the five-item Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell with 1,100 COD Points and 20 tier skips, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus with an extra Active Duty slot and a kit of insurance, rescue and extraction items.
Does the Modern Warfare 4 loyalty discount work on the upgrade?
No. The 10% discount is only for pre-ordering or pre-purchasing the Vault Edition directly on the same platform account that owns a qualifying earlier Call of Duty, and it expires October 23, 2026. Activision explicitly says it is not available on Vault upgrades.
When does Warzone Season 1 start?
Activision says Season 1 follows "shortly after" the October 23 launch and has not published a date. Season 1 is when Warzone gets the Modern Warfare 4 integration, the new Zodiac Resurgence map and the Hajin Battle Royale map, and when Warzone stops being playable on PS4 and Xbox One.
