WoW Forever Starting Zone Guide for Launch Night: Crowds, Faster Respawns, Zephras Isle and Where the New Combos Start
QUICK ANSWER · WOW: FOREVER STARTING ZONES AT LAUNCH
• Launch: Wednesday, November 4 at 5:00 PM CST (3:00 PM PST, 6:00 PM EST, midnight CET)
• Respawns: Blizzard raised respawn rates for launch, and starting zones are the fastest of all. This is temporary
• Likely busiest: Zephras Isle (every Skyborne), Deathknell (Undead Paladin), the Valley of Trials (Orc Mage and Troll Warlock) and Northshire (Human Hunter). This is our expectation, not a Blizzard figure
• Beta hints: 1,889,084 Skyborne and 612,096 Forsaken Paladins were created in beta, out of 8,862,354 characters
• Launch-build traps: New spells do not go on your bars automatically, and new bags do not equip themselves
• Best habit: Group for shared kill credit, skip the first crowded kill quest and come back, and move on to the next zone early

At 5:00 PM CST today, every new WoW: Forever character in your region will be standing in one of a handful of starting areas. That first hour decides whether your night feels like an adventure or a line. This guide is about where to start and how to get through levels 1 to 12 when everyone else is doing the same thing.

We cover the starting areas, which ones are likely to be busiest and why, what Blizzard changed about respawns and early quests in the launch build, and a level-by-level plan for launch night. For the route after your starting zone, our Forever leveling guide picks up from there. For login errors and queues, see our launch night troubleshooting guide.

Facts come from Blizzard's November 2 development notes, the official starter guides and the beta numbers Blizzard released on October 30. Our crowd predictions are our own reasoning and are labeled that way.

Where Each Race Starts

Blizzard's New Player's Starter Guide says your race decides your starting location. Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle, a new level 1 to 12 zone. Every other race begins in its original starting valley, as it did through the beta.

Blizzard has not published a per-race start table for the live game. The original valleys above are what beta players reported, and nothing in the launch notes suggests a change. If your character appears somewhere else tonight, trust the game.

Which Starting Zones Will Be Busiest

Blizzard has not shared any population data for launch. But two official numbers point in a clear direction. Blizzard's beta numbers card, posted on October 30 and covered by Wowhead, counted:

  • 8,862,354 characters created
  • 1,889,084 Skyborne
  • 612,096 Forsaken Paladins
Characters are not players, and the beta mixed pack owners, invites and a stress test. Still, if those ratios hold anywhere near launch, roughly one new character in five would be Skyborne and one in fourteen an Undead Paladin. Here is our read on each area:
  • Zephras Isle: very busy. Every Skyborne of both factions starts here. Only pack owners can play Skyborne, but beta was full of pack owners, and it is the newest content in the game. Expect it to be the most crowded starting zone in the first hours.
  • Deathknell: busy. Undead Paladin is the headline new combo, tied to Blizzard's "Unbowed" short story. Classic Undead classes start here too.
  • Valley of Trials: busy. Orcs and Trolls share it, and it now has two new combos, Orc Mage and Troll Warlock, on top of the classic Orc Warrior, Hunter and Rogue crowd.
  • Northshire and Coldridge Valley: busy to medium. Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman and Gnome Priest all start in these two valleys.
  • Shadowglen and Camp Narache: likely the quietest. Neither got a new combo. Tauren did get a big racial buff, Plainsrunning up to 60% movement speed on foot, which may pull some players to Mulgore.
This is our expectation, not a Blizzard figure. Layering also changes the math. Blizzard splits crowded zones into layers, so a "busy" zone may feel fine if the game spins up enough copies. On the official tech podcast, Blizzard said layers follow zones or small groups of zones and that it can tune them as players spread out.

What Blizzard Changed for Launch Crowds

Faster respawns, fastest in starting zones

Blizzard's November 2 development notes say respawn rates were adjusted in many areas "to properly support large player volumes at launch." The rates are "generally on the faster side in lower-level zones," with starting zones being the fastest, and they slow as you level.

Blizzard is also clear that you will still wait sometimes: "Some contention for spawns is expected and part of the experience." Once the launch rush thins out, the low-level zones will go back to "more typical rates." No date was given.

Quest fixes in the early zones

The same notes include several fixes in starter and early zones:

  • Mulgore: Gloomrise Hatchlings now give less experience, to match their lower health. Tauren who planned to farm them should not count on it.
  • Teldrassil: The Cleft has slightly fewer spiders during "Twisted Hatred," so it is less of a death trap.
  • Darkshore: "Holy Diver" now gives experience.
  • The Barrens: You can speak to Rethgar Deathgate to start "Counterattack!" if it is not active, and the Alliance Outrunners now spawn in random places.
  • Ruins of Lordaeron: The dungeon quests all need level 15 to start (was a mix of 15 and 16).
  • Across the world: Quest experience, prerequisites and level settings were adjusted "to improve flow," and missing map markers and objective tooltips were added.

Two habits retail players need to change

The launch build has two small changes that will cause confusion tonight:

  • Learning a new spell no longer puts it on your action bar. Open your Spellbook (P) after every trainer visit and drag the new spell onto your bars.
  • New bags no longer equip themselves. Drag each new bag into an empty bag slot.
Class training costs were also flattened: 206 to 207 gold covers all class training from 1 to 60 for every class. At the starting-zone level that is a few copper per spell, but it adds up later. Our launch patch notes explained covers every class change.

Zephras Isle at Launch

Zephras Isle is the one starting zone nobody outside the beta has seen. Blizzard describes it as "an elemental skybound starting experience" for levels 1 to 12 that blends Classic Warcraft style with architecture inspired by Skywall. At character creation you choose:

  • Windshaper Skyborne (Horde): Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Warrior or Shaman.
  • High Order Skyborne (Alliance): Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Warrior or Mage.
Both factions begin on the island, which matters on PvP. Blizzard has not said how the factions are separated on Zephras Isle, so on the PvP ruleset be ready for contact with the other side earlier than you would get it in an original starting zone.

The Skyborne racials were adjusted in Blizzard's late October racial pass:

  • Wind-Blessed: 2% haste (was 3%).
  • Read Leyline: 50% more regeneration, or 100% while you have the Attuned buff.
  • Skysight: 15% movement speed, or 30% while you have the Charged buff.
Attuned and Charged both persist through death and drop when you enter a raid. On Zephras Isle, keep them up. Extra speed and regeneration make a crowded zone much easier to get through.

Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher. If you only have a subscription, you cannot make one tonight.

The Kobold Miner Warning

Blizzard's beta card named the Kobold Miner as the deadliest creature in the beta. Kobold Miners live in the mines of Elwynn Forest, right next to where every Human starts. Blizzard also named the Hall of Thanes as the deadliest dungeon and Hillsbrad Foothills as the zone with the most PvP.

The card has no method behind "deadliest," so it may just mean a lot of new characters met Kobold Miners. Still, the lesson for launch night is simple. Kobold mines are packed with mobs that respawn quickly, and tonight they respawn faster than usual. Do not pull more than you can handle in a tunnel full of other players.

A Launch Night Plan for Levels 1 to 12

This is the order we would play tonight.

Levels 1 to 3: get the basics done

  • Set your Experience Preset. The first login asks you to choose Classic or Enhanced. Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are not sure. You only see this screen once per account.
  • Set keybinds and bars before the first pull. Remember new spells will not appear on their own.
  • Pick up every quest in the first hub. Then look at which ones are kill quests and which are collection, delivery or exploration quests.
  • Do the non-kill quests first if the area is packed. Collection objects respawn on their own timers, and delivery quests do not depend on tagging a mob.

Levels 3 to 6: group for kill credit

  • Invite the people around you. Kill credit is shared in a group, so five players fighting over the same named mob can all finish together.
  • Accept the layer refresh when out of combat. After you join a group, you get a pop-up asking when you want to move to your group's world. Blizzard added this for launch so you are not pulled away in the middle of a fight.
  • Use /who, nameplates and chat. In a crowded zone someone is usually already organizing a group for the named quest mob. Ask.

Levels 6 to 10: leave the valley early

  • Leave the starter valley once its quests are done. Every original starting valley opens into a bigger zone (Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil, Durotar, Mulgore, Tirisfal Glades) with more quest hubs and more space.
  • Pick professions in the first town. Each character gets two primary professions plus Cooking, Fishing and First Aid. Gathering professions earn the most on launch week, when demand for raw materials is highest.
  • Bind your Hearthstone and grab flight paths as you pass them.
  • Sit at campfires. Sitting briefly by a campfire makes you rested and gives you campsite buffs. Camping objects from professions unlock at low skill, which our camping guide explains.

Levels 10 to 12: tanks and healers, start looking for groups

Nine new five-player dungeons run from level 13 to 60. If you can tank or heal, you will find groups fast. On that front the launch notes help tanks a lot:

  • Paladins learn Righteous Fury at level 10 now, the same level other tanks get their stance.
  • Bear Form threat went up to 115% and Defensive Stance threat to 80%, because Blessing of Salvation is gone.

Should You Start in Another Race's Zone?

If you hate fighting for spawns, you have a few options:

  • Pick a quieter race. Night Elf and Tauren are the only original races with no new combo pulling players in. If you are flexible, they are the safest bet for a calm first hour.
  • Walk to a neighboring zone. Nothing stops a level 1 character from leaving the starter valley. A Dwarf or Gnome can walk into the rest of Dun Morogh, and an Orc or Troll can walk into Durotar. You will skip the opening story, but you will find open mobs. On PvP, stay on your own faction's side.
  • Wait for Thursday. Respawns stay fast for now, and the crowd thins out as people log off. Blizzard's note says it will only slow respawns after the surge settles, so Thursday and Friday should still have fast spawns with fewer people.
  • Play an alt during the rush. The Legacy System rewards trying different classes and professions across your account. Making a second character in a quiet zone while your main's zone is jammed is not wasted time.

What We Do Not Know Yet

  • Actual population per zone. Blizzard has not shared any launch data, and our crowd guesses come from beta numbers.
  • How many layers each starting zone runs. Blizzard can tune this live.
  • When respawns slow back down. Blizzard said only "once the initial launch surge of low-level characters has settled down."
  • How Zephras Isle handles both factions on PvP. Blizzard has not explained it.
  • Hardcore. It is not available at launch. Blizzard says details and timing will come later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Skyborne start in WoW Forever?

Skyborne of both factions start on Zephras Isle, a new level 1 to 12 starting zone. You choose Windshaper (Horde) or High Order (Alliance) at character creation, and you need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher to play the race.

Which WoW Forever starting zone is the least crowded at launch?

Blizzard has not released launch population data. Our expectation is that Shadowglen (Night Elf) and Camp Narache (Tauren) will be the quietest, since neither got a new race and class combo. Zephras Isle, Deathknell and the Valley of Trials are likely the busiest.

Are respawn rates faster in WoW Forever starting zones?

Yes. Blizzard's November 2 development notes say respawn rates were raised for launch, with starting zones the fastest. They will be lowered to more typical rates once the launch surge settles.

Where does the Undead Paladin start in WoW Forever?

Undead Paladins start with the other Forsaken in Deathknell in Tirisfal Glades. Blizzard's beta numbers counted 612,096 Forsaken Paladins created during beta, so expect the area to be busy on launch night.

Where do the new race and class combos start?

Human Hunters start in Northshire, Dwarf Shamans and Gnome Priests in Coldridge Valley, Orc Mages and Troll Warlocks in the Valley of Trials, and Undead Paladins in Deathknell.

Why are my new spells not on my action bar?

In the WoW: Forever launch build, learning a spell no longer adds it to your action bar automatically. Open the Spellbook with P and drag new spells to your bars after each trainer visit.

How do I share kill credit in WoW Forever?

Group up with other players. Group members share kill credit on quest mobs, which is the fastest way through crowded starting zones. After joining a group, accept the world refresh prompt when you are out of combat so you end up on the same layer.

What is the deadliest creature in WoW Forever?

According to Blizzard's beta numbers card, the Kobold Miner was the deadliest creature in the beta. Kobold Miners are found in the mines of Elwynn Forest near the Human starting area.
