WoW Midnight Slayer's Rise: 40v40 Battleground and
Midnight's new 40v40 epic battleground plus its open-world PvP zone in northern Voidstorm — every objective, both Domanaar bosses, the Slayer's Duellum…

Slayer's Rise Is Two Things

Most players treat Slayer's Rise as the new 40v40 Epic battleground and call it done. That misses half the system. Slayer's Rise is also a War Mode-exclusive open-world PvP subzone in northern Voidstorm — a permanent space with its own reputation track (Slayer's Duellum), its own currency (Voidlight Marl), and its own rewards including two of the Shredclaw cat mounts and a Paragon Cache mount.

The instanced BG and the open zone share lore, NPCs, and visual themes, but they're separate content. This guide covers both.

The Lore Setup

Two Domanaar lords — void warlords — control the area: Vidious, Domanaar of Grief, and Ziadan, Domanaar of Hate. Despite being rivals, they've allied to use Slayer's Rise as a "battle exercise" arena, recruiting bloodthirsty warriors from both Horde and Alliance to fight on their behalf.

Master's Perch sits at the heart of the zone. Both Domanaars are there. You can speak with either to toggle War Mode, accept contracts, or visit the reputation quartermaster.

Open-World Slayer's Rise

The zone is accessible without War Mode for questing and reputation farming. War Mode is required only to participate in the timed events — the meaty PvP content where the Voidlight Marl currency drops.

The Six Timed Events

Events rotate every 30 minutes. Six event types in the cycle:

VOID POSTS
Three control points around the map. A faction holding all three gets the Risen Slayer buff — +5% damage done and +10% Honor gains. The single most impactful objective in the zone.
CAPTURED VOID · 5 MIN
Siphon void from barrels in the Bloodplains and deliver to faction turn-in points. No mounting allowed while carrying void — you sprint on foot and become a target.
DOMANAAR ESCORT
Each faction guides their Domanaar escort to objectives while disrupting the opposing escort. Domanaar Fatigue slows their movement by 5% every 5 attacks they receive — focus-fire the enemy escort to chain-stack the slow.
ETHEREAL CONTROL · 5 MIN
Three control zones operating Wintergrasp-style. Standard hold-and-defend rotation; the side with two of three at event close wins.
ETHEREAL DISRUPTION
Low-gravity event. Gather Ethereal Energy from barrels, lamps, and player kills, then exchange with Balaak the Twice-Exiled for combat buffs (100 energy per buff). The gravity changes how every encounter plays.
VOID SCAVENGE
Increased Void-Tainted Remains drops zone-wide, accelerating completion of the repeatable scavenge quest. The most casual-friendly event — you don't need to PvP to make progress.

Slayer's Duellum Reputation

The PvP reputation track that anchors the open-world rewards. You earn standing through:

  • World Quests in Slayer's Rise
  • Quests at Master's Perch
  • Wins in the timed events
The quartermaster is Thraxadar at the northern end of Master's Perch. He sells everything for Voidlight Marl, the currency that drops from event participation.

Reputation Rewards

  • Galactic-themed housing decor at 250-4,000 Voidlight Marl per piece
  • Prowling Shredclaw mount — 6,000 Marl, requires Exalted with Slayer's Duellum
  • Frenzied Shredclaw mount — 6,000 Marl, requires Exalted

Paragon Cache (Past Exalted)

Once you hit Exalted and continue earning reputation, you fill a Paragon bar. Each Paragon Cache turn-in has a chance to drop:

  • Duskbrute Harrower mount
  • Nova companion pet
The Duskbrute Harrower is also one of the more visually striking mounts in the zone — a void-themed bat creature that fits Voidstorm's aesthetic.

The 40v40 Battleground

Separate from the open-world zone. The instanced battleground is queued through the standard PvP interface and matches you against 40 enemy players for a long-form fight.

The Goal

Push down a single lane to the enemy faction's Spire and kill their Domanaar.

  • Horde target: Vidious at the Grief Spire
  • Alliance target: Ziadan at the Hate Spire

What's In Your Way

The path between starting positions and the enemy Spire is layered with:

  • 40 enemy players actively defending
  • NPC defenders at every major chokepoint
  • Destructible defenses (towers, gates) that have to be brought down
  • Key NPC commanders that buff their faction when alive

Side Objectives

Three side objectives shift the lane balance significantly:

  • Recruit neutral NPC forces — small encampments around the map. Defeat the encampment's leader and the survivors join your push toward the Spire. Significant reinforcement value.
  • Shenzar Refinery — capture this and you activate weapons of war that automatically damage the enemy's home base. The single biggest power swing on the map.
  • Take Flight black holes — scattered around the BG. Click one and gain a flight buff that traverses the enormous map in seconds. Coordinated teams rotate Take Flight usage as if they were raid cooldowns; uncoordinated teams ignore them and lose.

Battleground Strategy

The community has settled on a rough composition for organized 40-mans:

  • 10 dedicated lane pushers — heavy-hitting melee or sustained DPS that just chew defenses
  • 6 mobility strikers — Demon Hunters, Windwalker Monks, Feral Druids — for striking the recruiter encampments and grabbing Take Flight first
  • 8 ranged pressure — Balance Druids, Arcane Mages, Elemental Shamans for cleave damage
  • 6 healers — Resto Druid + Disc Priest + Holy Paladin combo handles the sustain
  • 4 recruitment runners — players tasked specifically with converting neutral NPCs
  • 4 defensive backline — defending home from enemy push
  • 2 flex roles — respond to Refinery flips and other emergencies
Pug battlegrounds rarely organize this cleanly. The biggest single thing a pug can do is always rotate Take Flight when you respawn — it cuts your time-to-objective by 60%+.

How To Farm Voidlight Marl Efficiently

If you're farming for the Shredclaw mounts (6,000 Marl each, 12,000 total for both):

  • Toggle War Mode on at Master's Perch
  • Sit in zone during the Void Posts event for the Risen Slayer +10% Honor buff
  • Run every event in the 30-min cycle, prioritizing Captured Void and Ethereal Control (highest Marl payouts)
  • Knock out the daily Slayer's Duellum World Quests for additional Marl
  • Save your Vault and Paragon turn-ins for after you have enough Marl for the mounts — focus the spend
Realistic timing: 12,000 Marl = ~2-3 weeks of consistent active play, faster with a friend on the same faction.

Slayer's Rise vs Other Battlegrounds

For BG comparison:

  • Larger than Wintergrasp's 25v25, comparable to Isle of Conquest's 40v40 scale
  • Lane structure is more linear than Alterac Valley but with similar boss-kill win condition
  • The Take Flight mechanic is unique to Slayer's Rise — no other BG has aerial fast-travel
  • Match length is typically 25-40 minutes for organized teams; pug stomps can run 50+
