The Venomous Abyss is the eight-boss raid for WoW Midnight Season 2. Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 open during the week of August 18, 2026. The raid ends with Ula'tek and introduces a complete Season 2 class-set tier, item-level 279–344 raid loot, Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge achievements, the Crimson Venomfang meta-achievement mount, difficulty-based housing trophies, and the Primeval Skyfriend from Mythic Ula'tek.

This guide answers the practical questions players are searching for: when every wing opens, where the entrance is, which bosses drop each tier slot, what item level drops on every difficulty, and exactly which rewards are seasonal.

Source status: Verified August 10, 2026 against Blizzard's Season 2 announcement and Wowhead's Venomous Abyss raid overview. Live hotfixes can still change tuning, timers, or item levels after launch; named rewards and unlock dates below are the latest published values.

When Does The Venomous Abyss Raid Open?

The full organized-raid ladder opens on August 18: Normal, Heroic, and Mythic are all available immediately rather than being staggered across separate weeks. Raid Finder opens one wing per week, while Story Mode arrives with Wing 2.

Aug 18 Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1
The entire organized ladder opens at once. Mythic progression guilds and Normal pugs start on the same reset, which is the practical difference between Season 2 and the staggered launches players remember from older expansions.
Aug 25 Story Mode and Raid Finder Wing 2
Story Mode arrives a week late, so players who only want the narrative conclusion of Ula'tek's release do not need to queue Raid Finder in week one.
Sep 1 Raid Finder Wing 3
The third wing enters the queue rotation.
Sep 8 Raid Finder Wing 4
The final wing opens, making a complete Raid Finder clear possible for the first time — the fourth weekly release, three weeks after Mythic guilds could already reach Ula'tek.

For North American realms, weekly content normally becomes available after regional maintenance. Other regions follow their own reset timing, so “week of” is more accurate than treating every unlock as simultaneous worldwide.

What the wing schedule means for you
If your goal is Ahead of the Curve, the Raid Finder schedule is irrelevant — AotC needs Heroic Ula'tek, which is available from day one. The wing calendar only matters if Raid Finder is your actual clear path, in which case the last boss is three weeks away no matter how fast you gear.

Where Is The Venomous Abyss Entrance?

The raid is inside Atal'Utek, in the Vaults of Atal'Utek beneath the Coiled Isle. Wowhead lists the raid entrance at 47.2, 21.7 in the interior map. Three gates lead into the Vaults:

Gate of the Serpent Eye
43.3, 44.2 — the northern approach into the Vaults.
Gate of the Eastern Fang
45.4, 65.9 — the eastern approach into the Vaults.
Gate of the Western Fang
31.8, 64.9 — the western approach into the Vaults.

The required character level is 90. Raid Finder requires item level 273 according to the current raid overview.

How Many Bosses Are in The Venomous Abyss?

There are eight encounters. The raid is not a completely straight corridor: after the opening boss, groups clear two branches before returning toward the final sequence. That means the exact order of the middle encounters can vary, but the complete roster is fixed.

1. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler
Opening encounterNo tier token
The gatekeeper of the Vaults and the raid's difficulty calibration fight. Nek'zali is the boss every difficulty tier meets first, which makes it the encounter your group should use to decide whether the difficulty you queued is the difficulty you can sustain. It sits on the lowest loot band of the raid — item level 279 on Raid Finder through 318 on Mythic — so a farm kill here is worth less than any other boss in the instance. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler on Wowhead.
2. Entombed Sentinels
Branch encounterTier: hands
The first of the tier-token bosses and one of the two encounters that open the raid's branching middle. Entombed Sentinels drops the hands token for every armour class. Hands are frequently the slot players fill last from the Catalyst, so clearing this boss early in a progression week has an outsized effect on how many Catalyst charges you can save for badly itemised slots. Entombed Sentinels on Wowhead.
3. The Lost Explorers
Branch encounterTier: shoulders
A multi-target encounter that drops the shoulders token. Because both branches are open after Nek'zali, groups can and do meet The Lost Explorers before or after the other branch's bosses — a detail that matters for loot planning, because kill order changes which loot band you have access to first. The Lost Explorers on Wowhead.
4. Vashnik the Malignant
Branch encounterTier: chest
Vashnik sits in the raid's middle loot band and drops the chest token. Chest is a five-piece set slot in every class configuration, so this is a boss that no set-completion plan can route around. Vashnik the Malignant on Wowhead.
5. Sszorak
Branch encounterTier: legs
The legs token boss. Sszorak closes out the branch section for most routes, which puts it right at the Great Vault's four-boss breakpoint for groups clearing in a straight line. Sszorak on Wowhead.
6. The Twin Fangs
Tier: helmPost-branch
The helm token boss and the encounter that reconverges the raid after its two branches. On a full-clear route this is the sixth kill, which makes it the boss that completes the Great Vault raid row. The Twin Fangs on Wowhead.
7. The Coiled Altar
PenultimateTop Mythic loot band
The penultimate encounter, and — on Mythic — the first boss in the raid's top loot band. Wowhead's table puts the last two Mythic bosses at item level 344, described as a Myth 9 equivalent, well above the Myth 1/6 that the raid's opening Mythic bosses drop. The Coiled Altar on Wowhead.
8. Ula'tek
Final bossAotC · Cutting Edge · Mount
Everything seasonal converges here. Ula'tek gates Ahead of the Curve on Heroic, Cutting Edge on Mythic, the Primeval Skyfriend mount from Mythic kills, the top Mythic loot band, and the universal Slumbering Coil Curio that any class can trade for the tier piece it is missing. It is also the only boss in the raid where the difficulty you kill on changes which housing trophies the whole raid receives. Ula'tek on Wowhead.

Players looking for mechanical strategy should use the individual boss pages as they are finalized. This article focuses on the stable raid structure and rewards rather than publishing PTR tactics that may be hotfixed before progression begins.

What Item Level Does The Venomous Abyss Drop?

Raid loot increases by boss band. Later encounters award stronger items, and on Mythic difficulty the last two bosses jump to item level 344, described by Wowhead as the equivalent of Myth 9. Each boss also drops the Mistcrest tier appropriate to the raid difficulty.

DifficultyBoss 1Bosses 2–3Bosses 4–6Bosses 7–8Mistcrest
Raid Finder279 — Veteran 1/6282 — Veteran 2/6285 — Veteran 3/6289 — Veteran 4/6Veteran
Normal292 — Champion 1/6295 — Champion 2/6298 — Champion 3/6302 — Champion 4/6Champion
Heroic305 — Hero 1/6308 — Hero 2/6311 — Hero 3/6315 — Hero 4/6Hero
Mythic318 — Myth 1/6321 — Myth 2/6324 — Myth 3/6344 — Myth 9 equivalentMyth

The jump on the final two Mythic encounters matters for loot planning: a simple “Mythic raid drops 318” summary is incomplete. Ula'tek and the penultimate boss sit above the ordinary Mythic track endpoint in the published table.

Read the table by band, not by difficulty: The gap between the first and last boss on a single difficulty is larger than the gap between two adjacent difficulties at the same boss. Heroic boss 8 (315) trails Mythic boss 1 (318) by only three item levels, and beats every Normal boss outright. A group that reliably clears late Heroic is gearing faster than a group that stalls on early Mythic.

Which Boss Drops Each Season 2 Tier-Set Piece?

Bosses two through six drop armor-class tokens. Ula'tek drops the Slumbering Coil Curio, which every class can roll on and exchange with Kirana for the tier piece of the player's choice.

Tier can also come from the Great Vault, PvP, or the Matrix Catalyst. Season 2 changes the Catalyst so a converted item keeps its original secondary stats and any cantrip effect, which makes the quality of the base item more important than it was previously. See Wowhead's Midnight Season 2 tier-set guide for specialization bonuses and appearance previews.

How Does The Venomous Abyss Fill the Great Vault?

The raid row unlocks choices after 2, 4, and 6 bosses from current-season raids on any eligible difficulty other than Story Mode. The item level and eligible boss pool depend on what you actually defeated, so killing only early Heroic bosses does not create the same Vault pool as reaching the final encounters.

2
Bosses → 1st Vault option
4
Bosses → 2nd Vault option
6
Bosses → 3rd Vault option

For efficient progression, clear the highest difficulty you can finish consistently, then add bosses rather than sacrificing a complete 6-boss row for a single speculative kill. Mythic Ula'tek is an aspirational reward target, not an efficient first-week gearing plan for most groups.

Story Mode does not count: Story Mode is excluded from Great Vault raid credit. A Story clear satisfies narrative curiosity and nothing on your weekly reward sheet — plan the two, four, and six kills on an eligible difficulty.

What Does Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek Require?

Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek requires defeating Ula'tek on Heroic difficulty or higher during Midnight Season 2. It is a seasonal Feat of Strength and becomes unavailable when Season 2 ends.

It does not come from a full Normal clear, Raid Finder, Story Mode, or a heroic kill after the season closes. If AotC is your only goal, the required event is the eligible Ula'tek kill; a full-clear service is a separate scope.

What Does Cutting Edge: Ula'tek Require?

Cutting Edge: Ula'tek requires defeating Ula'tek on Mythic difficulty during Midnight Season 2. Like AotC, this is tied to the seasonal window.

Cutting Edge should not be confused with Hall of Fame. The kill awards Cutting Edge while current; Hall of Fame separately requires being among the first 200 guilds worldwide to defeat Mythic Ula'tek.

Ahead of the Curve
Heroic Ula'tek or higher, during Season 2. One eligible kill. Becomes a Feat of Strength at season end.
Cutting Edge
Mythic Ula'tek, during Season 2. One eligible kill. Becomes a Feat of Strength at season end.
Hall of Fame
Mythic Ula'tek as one of the first 200 guilds worldwide. A race, not an achievement you can schedule.

How Do You Get the Primeval Skyfriend Mount?

Primeval Skyfriend, a WoW Midnight Season 2 mount from Raid

Raid
Crimson Venomfang, a WoW Midnight Season 2 mount from Raid
Crimson Venomfang
Raid

The Primeval Skyfriend drops from Mythic Ula'tek. Blizzard's announcement is precise: the encounter drops three mounts per Mythic kill.

Important loot distinction: Three mounts drop for the raid; this is not a guaranteed mount for every player in the group. Any listing or group agreement should state the allocation method instead of promising an individual drop that the encounter does not provide.

How Do You Get the Crimson Venomfang Mount?

Complete all eight special raid achievements in Glory of the Venomous Raider to earn the Crimson Venomfang mount:

  • Well, Well, Little Sky
  • Accidental Inclusion
  • Jumping Through Hoops
  • Watch Out Behind You
  • Is Venom Stasis A Joke To You?
  • Kept You Waiting Huh?
  • Taking a Bite out of Slime
  • No Egg Scramble
These are mechanic achievements, not simple boss-kill credit. A Glory run needs a group deliberately executing all eight conditions.
Glory requires Normal difficulty or higher: Each component achievement is gated at Normal or above — see Well, Well, Little Sky. Raid Finder and Story Mode clears do not award Glory credit, so a Glory run has a difficulty floor even though the conditions themselves are mechanical.
Glory runs are a different kind of raid night
A Glory group is optimising for eight specific conditions, several of which require the raid to deliberately not kill something, not stand somewhere, or wait. Scheduling Glory inside a progression night usually costs both goals. Treat it as its own run once the roster can clear the raid comfortably.

What Does Ula'tek Drop Besides Gear?

Ula'tek carries more than the raid's top loot band. The encounter is the single source of the raid's mount, its housing trophies, a decor mural, the universal tier curio, and every seasonal raid achievement. Wowhead's Ula'tek boss guide groups these under More Rewards.

Mount
Primeval Skyfriend — Mythic only. Three drop per kill, not one per player.
Tier token
Slumbering Coil Curio — a universal curio every class can trade for the tier slot it still needs.
Trinket
Voracious Heart of Ula'tek — the encounter's named trinket.
Decor
Housing trophies by difficulty, plus a “Rage of the Shackled” Mural with a chance to drop on any difficulty.

Which achievements come from Ula'tek?

Seven achievements sit on the Ula'tek encounter. Only two of them are the ones most groups mean when they say "the Ula'tek achievement":

AchievementWhat it takes
The Venomous Abyss: Ula'tekDefeat Ula'tek — the base kill credit
Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tekHeroic Ula'tek during Season 2
Mythic: Ula'tekDefeat Ula'tek on Mythic difficulty
Cutting Edge: Ula'tekMythic Ula'tek during Season 2
Hall of Fame: Ula'tekMythic Ula'tek as one of the first 200 guilds worldwide
Mythic: Ula'tek Guild RunA Mythic kill with a qualifying guild group
No Egg ScrambleOne of the eight Glory of the Venomous Raider conditions
Mythic: Ula'tek is not Cutting Edge: Both come from a Mythic kill, but only Cutting Edge is seasonal. Mythic: Ula'tek remains earnable after Season 2 closes; Cutting Edge does not. A service or group promising “the Mythic Ula'tek achievement” has named two different things.

Which housing trophies drop from Ula'tek?

Blizzard lists guaranteed housing trophies for all raid members based on the highest eligible Ula'tek difficulty, at a 100% drop rate to everyone in the raid:

DifficultyGuaranteed trophy drops
Raid Finder or NormalThe Venomous Abyss Argent Trophy
HeroicArgent Trophy + Gleaming Trophy
MythicArgent Trophy + Gleaming Trophy + Aureate Trophy

Unlike the Primeval Skyfriend, these are guaranteed to every raid member rather than a limited number of drops per kill — and they stack downward, so a Mythic kill delivers all three tiers at once.

The two published sources disagree on which trophy is which: The table above follows Blizzard's Season 2 announcement, which pairs Heroic with the Gleaming Trophy and adds the Aureate Trophy at Mythic. Wowhead's Ula'tek boss page lists the opposite pairing — Aureate at Heroic, Gleaming at Mythic. The difficulty tiers and the number of trophies are not in dispute, only which name attaches to Heroic and which to Mythic. Confirm the trophy name in-game before scoping an order around one specific trophy.

Separately, the “Rage of the Shackled” Mural has a chance to drop from Ula'tek on any difficulty. It is a chance drop rather than a guaranteed one, so it is not something a run can promise.

How to Prepare for The Venomous Abyss

  • Reach level 90 and unlock the Coiled Isle and Vaults of Atal'Utek travel routes.
  • Use August 11 Heroic and Mythic 0 dungeons, Delves, Prey, and the Great Vault setup week to replace weak Season 1 slots.
  • Decide whether your target is progression gear, a full clear, AotC, Cutting Edge, Glory, or Mythic-mount eligibility; each is a different commitment.
  • Review the two-wing raid layout and assign interrupts, dispels, and personal defensives before the first pull.
  • Track which tier-token bosses your armor class needs and preserve Catalyst charges for poorly itemized slots.
  • For Great Vault value, prioritize reaching 2, 4, and 6 eligible kills at the highest repeatable difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Venomous Abyss

When does The Venomous Abyss release?

Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 open the week of August 18, 2026. Story Mode and Wing 2 open August 25, Wing 3 opens September 1, and Wing 4 opens September 8.

How many bosses are in The Venomous Abyss?

Eight. Nek'zali is the opener and Ula'tek is the final boss, with two branches through the middle of the raid.

What item level does Heroic Venomous Abyss drop?

Heroic starts at item level 305 on the first boss and rises through 308 and 311 to item level 315 on the final two bosses.

What item level does Mythic Ula'tek drop?

The current published loot table lists item level 344 gear from the final two Mythic bosses, including Ula'tek.

Does Mythic Ula'tek guarantee the Primeval Skyfriend to every player?

No. Blizzard says Mythic Ula'tek drops three Primeval Skyfriend mounts per kill. That is three raid drops, not one guaranteed mount for each member.

Which bosses drop tier tokens?

Bosses two through six — Entombed Sentinels, The Lost Explorers, Vashnik the Malignant, Sszorak, and The Twin Fangs — cover hands, shoulders, chest, legs, and helm. Ula'tek drops the universal Slumbering Coil Curio instead.

Does Story Mode count for the Great Vault?

No. The raid row counts current-season boss kills on any eligible difficulty other than Story Mode.

Can I earn Glory of the Venomous Raider on Raid Finder?

No. Every component achievement requires Normal difficulty or higher, so Raid Finder and Story Mode clears award no Glory credit.

What is the difference between Mythic: Ula'tek and Cutting Edge: Ula'tek?

Both need a Mythic kill, but Cutting Edge is seasonal and Mythic: Ula'tek is not. Cutting Edge stops being earnable when Season 2 ends; the plain Mythic achievement does not.

Can I still earn AotC or Cutting Edge from the Season 1 raids?

No. Midnight Season 2 AotC and Cutting Edge are tied to Ula'tek. The Season 1 raid achievements retired at the end of Season 1 even though those raids remain playable.
