The Worlds 2026 Play-In opened on Thursday, October 15 at Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles, and it took exactly one day to blow up the expected script. Karmine Corp needed all five games and a comeback from 1-2 down to get past Cloud9 Kia. MVK Esports, the team that had not played an official match in almost seven weeks, swept FURIA 3-0. Nobody went home on Thursday, but the bracket now looks very different from what most people predicted.

This is the full Day 1 recap with game-by-game numbers, plus what is at stake today, Friday October 16, when Karmine Corp play MVK in the winners' match and FURIA face Cloud9 in the first elimination series of Worlds. All times are Central Daylight Time (CT, UTC-5). Results and stats come from Games of Legends (gol.gg), the GosuGamers Day 1 recap, the E-Sport Now bracket and Riot's Worlds 2026 primer. If you want the bracket rules and team backgrounds first, read our Play-In preview.

Both series were played on Patch 26.20 under Fearless Draft, which gol.gg labels on every match page. Fearless means a champion picked by either team in a series cannot be picked again later in that series, which is why the drafts below never repeat. A note on patch naming: Riot's official name is Patch 26.20, the same build we covered in our Patch 26.20 Worlds patch notes guide. gol.gg lists the game version as 16.20, which is the client's internal version number for the same patch, so you are not looking at two different builds.

Karmine Corp 3-2 Cloud9 Kia: The Comeback

This was the series of the day, and probably the best Play-In series we will get. Cloud9 led 1-0 and 2-1. Karmine Corp won the last two games, and the final scoreline on kills tells you how strange it was: across five games Cloud9 had 72 kills to Karmine Corp's 52, plus more towers (33 to 31) and more dragons (16 to 11), and still lost the series. When the bracket is double elimination, that is a painful way to drop to the lower side.

5Karmine Corp31:21KC 17-88-3Kyeahoo Ahri 6/1/8, Caliste Kai'Sa 3/1/10, KC 2 Barons

Game 1: Cloud9 by a mile

Cloud9 won Game 1 by a kill score of 20-1 in 35:02, the result GosuGamers called "dominant." Cloud9 took 11 towers to 3, two Barons to none, and four dragons. Loki finished 11/0/3 on Locke, and Blaber went 4/0/10 on Xin Zhao. Karmine Corp's only kill came from Kyeahoo's Syndra. If you had turned off the stream here, you would have assumed the series was over.

Game 2: KC win with fewer kills

Karmine Corp answered in 35:10 with a Jayce, Vi, Cassiopeia, Varus and Vel'Koz composition. This was the closest game of the series on gold. KC finished with 69k to Cloud9's 66.4k, and Cloud9 actually won the kill count 16-14. KC won it on structures, 7 towers to 5. Tactical had the cleanest line on the losing side with a 6/1/5 Kalista.

Game 3: Blaber's Jarvan IV puts C9 on match point

Cloud9 took Game 3 in 37:49, and this is the game GosuGamers credits to "Robert 'Blaber' Huang's Jarvan IV." His line was 7/0/14. Cloud9 controlled the map completely: 22 kills to 5, 10 towers to 4, two Barons, and all five dragons including the Elder. Karmine Corp did not take a single dragon. At 2-1 down, KC were one loss from the lower bracket.

Game 4: Caliste's Xayah forces Game 5

Game 4 was the longest of the series at 38:09, and it flipped the dragon story. Karmine Corp took five dragons including the Elder, and Caliste went 11/1/3 on Xayah with Busio on Rakan. KC won it 15-6 on kills, 9 towers to 4. Cloud9 drafted Yunara, Lulu, Sylas, Zaahen and Sejuani and could not find a way back into the game.

Game 5: KC close it out

The deciding game was the shortest of the series at 31:21. Cloud9 got first blood and first tower, and then Karmine Corp ran the game: 17 kills to 8, 8 towers to 3, both Barons. GosuGamers says Caliste "stepped up with a standout performance in the deciding game," and gol.gg has him at 3/1/10 on Kai'Sa. The rest of KC's lineup was just as clean. Kyeahoo's Ahri went 6/1/8 and Yike's Trundle went 5/1/10.

Over the series, Caliste finished 20/12/23 per gol.gg. Tactical had the most kills on either side with 22/9/25, and Vulcan led everyone in assists with 51. Cloud9 played well enough to win most series. They just could not close.

MVK Esports 3-0 FURIA: The Upset Sweep

Coming into Worlds, MVK were the team with the least recent match play. Our preview noted their last official match was on August 29. Rust did not show. FURIA came in off a five-game CBLOL final, and they were swept in three games that got shorter each time.

Game 1: MVK steal it

This is the game GosuGamers says FURIA "initially looked poised to take." The numbers back that up. FURIA got first blood, first tower and four dragons to MVK's one (three Ocean Drakes and a Hextech). The game still went to MVK in 35:24 by 11 kills to 10, with MVK up in gold 70.7k to 65.9k at the end. GosuGamers puts the swing down to "a series of costly mistakes" from FURIA. Chika played Cassiopeia (6/3/1) and Gury played Vi in the jungle.

Game 2: FURIA lose every tower

Game 2 was much less close. MVK won 27-13 on kills in 34:56 and took 10 towers while FURIA took zero. Kratos had MVK's best line that game on Rumble at 8/2/13. Gury went 8/3/6 on Lee Sin, and Chika's Viktor finished 4/2/12.

Game 3: The fastest game of Day 1

MVK ended the series in 27:02, the shortest game of the day. It was 22 kills to 8, 10 towers to none again, and a 59.4k to 46.2k gold lead at the end. Chika's Kog'Maw went 7/2/10, Harky's Jhin went 5/0/10, and Gury's Jarvan IV finished 5/2/10.

GosuGamers named Chika and Gury as the standouts, and the series numbers agree. Per gol.gg, Chika finished 17/7/23 and Gury 15/7/23 over three games. MVK out-killed FURIA 60 to 31 and out-towered them 28 to 7. The dragon count was even at 7 each, which says more about Game 1 than anything else.

Karmine Corp vs MVK Esports (winners' match)

Status at the time of writing: this series was still being played. It is listed for 18:00 UTC, which is 1:00 PM CT. When this article was written at about 2:10 PM CT, PEM.LOL's match page showed Karmine Corp ahead 1-0 after Game 1, and gol.gg had not posted any game data yet. A best-of-five has a long way to go from 1-0, so we are not going to guess at the final score. Check LoL Esports for the live result.

What we can say is what each result means. The winner goes straight to the Play-In final on Sunday, October 18, with Saturday off. Our preview walked through Riot's ruleset, which gives the team coming from the winners' match the Right of Dual Selection in Game 1 of the final, meaning it picks both side and pick position. The loser drops to Saturday's Round 3 match against the winner of FURIA vs Cloud9.

This is also the first time these two have met. PEM.LOL lists no previous meeting between Karmine Corp and MVK. KC come in having just survived five games against Cloud9, while MVK spent less than 100 minutes of game time beating FURIA.

FURIA vs Cloud9 Kia (elimination match)

The second series is listed at 23:00 UTC, which is 6:00 PM CT. It has not been played at the time of writing. This is a best-of-five elimination match. Per the ruleset our preview covered, the loser is out of Worlds in 19th place, the first team eliminated from the tournament.

Here is how I see it going in. Cloud9 lost a series where they had more kills, more towers and more dragons than the team that beat them. They won two games convincingly, including a 20-1 opener and an Elder-sealed Game 3, and their bot lane was arguably the best on either side over five games. The concern is how Thursday ended. Across Games 4 and 5, per gol.gg, Cloud9 had 14 kills to Karmine Corp's 32, 7 towers to 17, and zero Barons to KC's three. Once KC found their footing, Cloud9 stopped closing out fights.

FURIA's problem is starker. They did not take a single tower in Games 2 and 3, and their jungle and mid had difficult series by the numbers. Per gol.gg, Tatu finished 6/10/14 and Tutsz 6/8/12, and top laner Guigo went 4/19/9. FURIA did show something in Game 1, where they took first blood, first tower and four dragons. They need a lot more of that against a Cloud9 side that will still be angry about Thursday.

My lean is Cloud9, because their best games on Thursday were better than anything FURIA showed. But a best-of-five under Fearless Draft punishes thin champion pools, and a deciding Game 5 would test both teams' depth.

What Happens After Friday

Riot's primer lists the Play-In Stage as October 15 to 18, and both rdy.gg and E-Sport Now list one match on each of the last two days at 18:00 UTC. That is 1:00 PM CT.

  • Saturday, October 17 (Round 3): loser of KC vs MVK plays the winner of FURIA vs Cloud9. Best-of-five, listed at 1:00 PM CT. Our preview, based on Riot's ruleset, says the loser finishes 18th.
  • Sunday, October 18 (Round 4, Play-In final): winner of KC vs MVK plays the Round 3 winner. Best-of-five, listed at 1:00 PM CT. The loser finishes 17th. The winner goes to the Swiss Stage.
  • Swiss draw: Riot's primer says the Round 1 draw happens after the Play-In ends on October 18. The Play-In winner goes into Tier 4 and faces a Tier 1 team: Gen.G, Anyone's Legend, Team Liquid Alienware or G2 Esports. Same-region matchups are not allowed in Round 1.
  • Swiss Stage: starts Friday, October 23 in Allen, Texas. Our Worlds 2026 schedule and format guide has every date and CT start time from there to the Final in Brooklyn on November 14.
Worth keeping straight: Saturday's match is the lower bracket final, not the Play-In final. The single Swiss spot is decided on Sunday.

The same-region rule matters for these four teams. If Karmine Corp win the Play-In, they cannot draw G2 in Swiss Round 1. If Cloud9 win it, they cannot draw Team Liquid Alienware. MVK and FURIA have no Tier 1 team from their regions, so they could draw any of the four.

Pick'Ems and Where to Watch

Play-In Pick'Ems already locked before Thursday's first match, so your Play-In bracket is set. Riot's primer says Swiss picks open on October 18 after the Play-In, and lock on October 23 before the first Swiss match. You can play at lolesports.com/pickems or in the League client.

The official broadcast is on LoL Esports, Riot Games on Twitch and the LoL Esports YouTube channel. A best-of-five that goes the distance takes a while. Thursday's five games between KC and Cloud9 added up to roughly 177 minutes of game time on gol.gg's durations alone, before drafts and breaks, so the 6:00 PM CT match may start late if the first series runs long.

If watching the pros play Fearless has you wanting a deeper champion pool for ranked yourself, an account with more of the roster unlocked can save you a lot of Blue Essence grinding.

What Day 1 Told Us

A few things stood out after one day:

  • Objective counts did not decide series. Cloud9 led the KC series on kills, towers and dragons and lost. FURIA had four dragons in Game 1 and lost. Closing out games mattered more than early leads.
  • Elder decided two games. Both Elder dragons of the day were in the KC vs C9 series, one for each team, in Games 3 and 4. Both teams that took Elder won.
  • MVK's rust was a myth, or at least it was against FURIA. Almost seven weeks off did not show in three games where they gave up seven towers total.
  • The bot lanes carried. Caliste and Tactical were the two highest-kill players of the opening series. In the other, Harky did not die at all in Game 3.
Thursday's comeback means Karmine Corp have already shown they can win from behind. Whether they or MVK come out of the winners' match, the team that drops will need to win two more best-of-fives on consecutive days to reach Allen.
