Worlds 2026 Play-In Preview: Cloud9 vs KC, FURIA vs MVK, Schedule in CT and Who Gets Out
Quick Answer · Worlds 2026 Play-In · Oct 15-18
• Who: Cloud9 Kia (LCS3), Karmine Corp (LEC3), FURIA (CBLOL2) and MVK Esports (LCP3), at Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles.
• Format: four-team double elimination, every match best-of-five, six series in four days. Only the winner goes to the Swiss Stage.
• Opening day, Thursday Oct 15: Cloud9 Kia vs Karmine Corp at 1:00 PM CT, then FURIA vs MVK Esports at 6:00 PM CT (CDT), per the official LoL Esports schedule.
• Pick'Ems: Play-In picks lock before the first match on Oct 15, so get them in before 1:00 PM CT.
• Prize for the winner: a Tier 4 spot in the Swiss draw on Oct 18, facing a Tier 1 team (GEN, AL, TLAW or G2) in Round 1, with no same-region matchups allowed.
• After that: Swiss Oct 23-31 in Allen, TX; Knockouts Nov 3-14; Final Nov 14 in Brooklyn.

Worlds 2026 starts tomorrow, and it starts with the cruelest part of the event. Four teams fly into Los Angeles, play up to six best-of-fives in four days, and three of them go home before the Swiss Stage even begins. Only one team gets out.

This is the Play-In preview: who the four teams are, how each one got here, what their form looks like, the full schedule in Central time, and how I see the matchups. If you want the whole tournament in one place (all 19 teams, prize pool, every stage), that lives in our Worlds 2026 schedule, format and teams guide. For the balance side, Worlds is played on Patch 26.20, which we broke down in the Patch 26.20 Worlds patch notes guide.

Sources for this preview: Riot's Worlds 2026 primer, the official 2026 World Championship ruleset, the official LoL Esports schedule and regional results (the same data that powers lolesports.com), the LoL Esports X account for the draw, and Leaguepedia's Play-In page for rosters. Matchup reads near the end are my opinion and are labeled that way.

Worlds 2026 Play-In schedule in Central time

The Play-In draw happened right after the CBLOL Final on October 10. LoL Esports announced the two Round 1 pairings on X that evening: Karmine Corp vs Cloud9 and MVK vs FURIA.

Some recap sites have the opening day in the wrong order. The official LoL Esports schedule lists Cloud9 Kia vs Karmine Corp first, at 18:00 UTC (1:00 PM CT), and FURIA vs MVK Esports second, at 23:00 UTC (6:00 PM CT). The ruleset also says the draw order does not decide match order, so do not go by which pair was drawn first.

All times are Central Daylight Time (UTC-5). Riot's primer lists every Play-In day as starting at 11 AM PDT, which is 1:00 PM CT. The second match each day on October 15 and 16 is listed at 4 PM PDT (6:00 PM CT) on the LoL Esports schedule. A best-of-five can run long, so later matches may start after their listed time. For October 16, the schedule does not yet say whether the winners' match or the elimination match goes first, because it depends on Thursday's results.

How the Play-In bracket works

The ruleset lays out six best-of-five matches:

  • Round 1 (Oct 15): two matches, set by a fully random draw.
  • Round 2 (Oct 16): the two Round 1 winners play the winners' match. The two Round 1 losers play the elimination match, and that loser is out in 19th place.
  • Round 3 (Oct 17): the loser of the winners' match plays the winner of the elimination match. The loser finishes 18th.
  • Round 4 (Oct 18): the winners' match winner plays the Round 3 winner. The loser finishes 17th. The winner goes to the Swiss Stage.
Two details matter more than they look.

Side and pick order. In Rounds 1 to 3, the right of first selection for Game 1 is decided by coin flip or a similar method. The team that gets it chooses either its side or its pick position, and the other team gets the other choice. In Round 4, the team coming from the winners' match gets the Right of Dual Selection for Game 1, meaning it picks both side and pick position. After Game 1 of any series, the team that lost the previous game gets first selection.

The math on each path. Win Round 1 and the winners' match, and you are in Round 4 after two series, with Saturday off and dual selection waiting. Lose Round 1 and you need three more series wins on three straight days (Oct 16, 17 and 18), and you go into Round 4 without dual selection. That is why Thursday's results matter so much even though nobody is eliminated on Thursday.

The four teams at a glance

Here is how each team finished its domestic season, based on the official LoL Esports results.

The last column is the one I keep coming back to. These four teams arrive in very different states. FURIA played a five-game final five days before their first Play-In match. MVK have not played an official match in almost seven weeks.

Cloud9 Kia

How they qualified: third seed from the LCS. Cloud9 Kia finished the final 2026 regular season at 5-2 in third place, then swept Shopify Rebellion 3-0 and beat LYON 3-1 to reach the upper bracket final. From there it went wrong. They lost 1-3 to Team Liquid Alienware on September 27, a series we covered in our Team Liquid Worlds 2026 recap, and then lost the lower bracket final to LYON 1-3 on October 3. Liquid beat LYON 3-1 for the title the next day, so both of Cloud9's playoff losses came against the two teams that made the final.

Who to watch: Blaber is the constant. The longtime Cloud9 jungler is the player whose early pathing usually decides what kind of game Cloud9 gets to play. Thanatos and Loki give the roster two Korean solo laners, and the bot lane of Tactical and Vulcan is all North American (Vulcan is Canadian).

Form: better than the 1-3, 1-3 finish suggests. Cloud9 beat LYON 3-1 earlier in the same playoffs. The problem was closing. Against Liquid, our earlier recap noted Cloud9 won Game 3 with a creative top-side draft and then could not hold on.

The quiet advantage: this is a Worlds in North America, and the Play-In is in Los Angeles. Riot has not said anything about crowd numbers, but if any team gets a home feel in this bracket, it is Cloud9.

Karmine Corp

How they qualified: third seed from the LEC. Karmine Corp had the best regular season of any team in this bracket: 9-0, first place in the LEC's final 2026 split. Then the playoffs flipped the story. KC beat GIANTX 3-1, lost 1-3 to G2 Esports, and were knocked out by Movistar KOI 0-3 on September 19. G2 went on to beat KOI 3-0 in the final.

Who to watch: the lineup mixes regions. Canna (top) and kyeahoo (mid) are Korean imports, Yike is a Swedish jungler, Caliste is a French bot laner, and Busio is an American support. That last one gives the opening match a fun angle: an American support on the European team trying to knock out North America's third seed in Los Angeles.

Form: this is the hardest team to read in the bracket. A 9-0 regular season is the strongest result any of the four teams posted all split. A 0-3 in their last series is the weakest. KC also have the second-longest break of the four, 26 days since their last official match.

FURIA

How they qualified: second seed from the CBLOL. FURIA went 5-2 in the regular season, finishing fourth, and then took the long road. They beat RED Kalunga 3-0, lost to LOS 1-3, came back through the lower bracket by beating RED Kalunga 3-2 and LOUD 3-0, and lost the CBLOL Final to LOS 2-3 on October 10. LOS took the CBLOL's direct Swiss spot. FURIA came to the Play-In.

Who to watch: this is an all-Brazilian roster: Guigo (top), Tatu (jungle), Tutsz (mid), Ayu (bot) and JoJo (support).

Form: sharp but tired. FURIA have played five best-of-fives since September 6, including a five-game final. No team in the bracket has more recent high-pressure series. The downside is the turnaround: five days from a final in Brazil to a Bo5 in Los Angeles is tight for travel and prep.

MVK Esports

How they qualified: third seed from the LCP, through Championship Points according to Leaguepedia's seeding. In the LCP's third split, MVK went 3-1 in the opening Swiss stage, beating Ground Zero Gaming, GAM Esports and Relove Deep Cross Gaming and losing to Team Secret Whales. After that, CTBC Flying Oyster were the wall. MVK lost to CFO 2-3, beat GAM Esports 3-2 in the playoffs, and lost to CFO twice more (0-3 and 1-3).

Who to watch: an all-Vietnamese lineup of Kratos (top), Gury (jungle), Chika (mid), Harky (bot) and SiuLoong (support). The coaching staff Leaguepedia lists includes SofM, a name most international fans will recognize from his playing days.

Form: unknown, honestly. MVK's last official match was August 29. That is 47 days before their first Play-In series, by far the longest gap in the bracket. Long breaks can mean a well-prepared team with a deep scrim block, or a team that walks into Bo5 pressure cold. We will find out on Thursday evening.

Matchup reads (opinion)

Everything in this section is my opinion, based on the results above. None of it is a prediction from Riot or anyone else.

Cloud9 Kia vs Karmine Corp (Thursday, 1:00 PM CT)

This is the best match of the Play-In, and it is on day one. KC's regular season says they should be favorites. Their playoff results say they struggled to adapt over a long series against G2 and KOI. Cloud9's playoff results say the opposite: they could play a strong game against good teams but could not string enough of them together.

A best-of-five gives the team with more draft depth time to adjust after Game 1, and it rewards the team that settles first. My lean is Karmine Corp, narrowly, because their peak this year was higher. I would not be surprised by a five-game series, and a Cloud9 win would not be an upset in my book.

FURIA vs MVK Esports (Thursday, 6:00 PM CT)

FURIA come in with five recent Bo5s and a close final. MVK come in rested but untested since August, and their last month of competition was mostly losses to one team. My lean is FURIA, on recent series reps. The thing that could flip it is FURIA's short turnaround. If MVK use their long break well and come out with prepared drafts, the early games could be close.

Who gets out?

If you want one pick: I think the winner of Cloud9 vs Karmine Corp is the favorite to win the whole bracket, simply because it skips Saturday and gets dual selection in Round 4. The loser of that match is the team most likely to make a lower-bracket run, since both of these rosters have shown they can beat good teams. That is opinion, not a lock. Six best-of-fives in four days is a lot of room for one bad draft to change everything.

Where the Play-In winner goes

The winner moves to the Swiss Stage in Allen, Texas. According to Riot's primer, the Swiss Round 1 draw happens after the Play-In ends on October 18, and the Play-In winner sits in Tier 4:

  • Tier 1: Gen.G, Anyone's Legend, Team Liquid Alienware, G2 Esports
  • Tier 4: CTBC Flying Oyster, Invictus Gaming, Dplus Kia, Play-In winner
Tier 1 teams face Tier 4 teams in Round 1, and the primer says teams from the same region cannot meet in Round 1. So the Play-In winner opens against one of the four Tier 1 teams, with two exceptions that follow from that rule. If Cloud9 Kia win, they cannot open against Team Liquid Alienware. If Karmine Corp win, they cannot open against G2 Esports. FURIA or MVK could draw any of the four.

Swiss Round 1 is a best-of-one. Under the ruleset, matches only become best-of-three when advancement or elimination is on the line.

The rest of Worlds 2026 in Central time

Times below are from Riot's primer, converted to Central time. Daylight saving time ends on November 1, so the Knockout times are Central Standard Time.

  • Swiss Stage, Allen, TX: Oct 23 to 26 at 12:00 PM CDT; Oct 28 to 30 at 3:00 PM CDT; Oct 31 at 12:00 PM CDT.
  • Quarterfinals, Allen, TX: Nov 3 to 6 at 4:00 PM CST.
  • Semifinals, Allen, TX: Nov 7 and 8 at 4:00 PM CST.
  • Final, Brooklyn, NY: Saturday, Nov 14 at 1:00 PM CST (Riot lists 2 PM EST).
Swiss is five rounds. Three match wins move a team on to the Knockouts, and three losses send it home.

Pick'Ems timing

Pick'Ems and Crystal Ball are back for Worlds 2026, playable at lolesports.com/pickems or in the League client. The dates that matter this week, from Riot's primer:

  • Oct 15, before the first Play-In match: Play-In picks lock. With Cloud9 Kia vs Karmine Corp listed at 1:00 PM CT, submit before then.
  • Oct 18: Swiss picks open, after the Play-In finishes.
  • Oct 23, before the first Swiss match: Swiss picks lock (the first Swiss day starts at 12:00 PM CT).
  • Oct 31: Knockout picks open. They lock on Nov 3 before the first quarterfinal.
Riot says Pick'Ems scores finalize after the Final on November 14, and it aims to send rewards within 48 hours. If you think you earned a reward and do not have it by November 21, Riot says to contact Player Support.

How to watch the Play-In

The official English broadcast is on lolesports.com, twitch.tv/riotgames and the LoL Esports YouTube channel. Riot's primer also lists Twitch subscriptions on the LoL Esports channels as a way to support teams through the Global Revenue Pool.

Riot's in-game Worlds content, including the True Damage Know My Name Yasuo skin and the Season 3: Worlds 2026 Pass, runs alongside the tournament. If you want to grind that pass on a second account during Worlds, AccountShark's League account listings are an option worth a look.
