Every Unobtainable WoW Mount: Complete 2026 Guide

Every Unobtainable WoW Mount: Complete 2026 Guide
The WoW mounts that are actually gone — permanently-removed raid metas, the discontinued TCG, past Gladiator seasons, closed Collector's Edition bundles — with the acquisition history, year retired, and estimated account-value tier per mount. Rare-but-still-farmable mounts like Ashes of Al'ar and Invincible are broken out into a separate drop-rate-locked section so the unobtainable list stays strict.
TL;DR — Unobtainable Mounts in 2026
A mount is genuinely unobtainable when its source is permanently removed — not when it's merely a rare drop. This guide applies that line strictly. 12 permanently-removed legendaries (Scarab Lord, Amani War Bear, original Zul'Gurub, Crusader Warhorses, retired racial skins, BlizzCon bundles). 38 expired Gladiator seasons. 9 retired Mythic+ Keystone Master seasonal rewards. 82 MoP Remix and Legion Remix event-exclusive mounts. 12 TCG mounts from the discontinued 2006–2013 card game. 9 Twitch/Prime promotional mounts. 7 Collector's/Digital Deluxe bundles. 0 Feats of Strength. A separate section covers 7 drop-rate-locked mounts (Ashes of Al'ar, Invincible, Mimiron's Head) that are technically still farmable and therefore not counted as unobtainable.
WoW unobtainable mounts

What Makes a WoW Mount Unobtainable?

A mount is unobtainable when its source has been permanently removed — a retired achievement, a closed TCG, a one-time event, a converted raid zone — AND there is no announced path for its return. Drop-rate-locked mounts (Ashes of Al'ar, Invincible, Mimiron's Head) sit in a separate category: technically still farmable, but at rates so low that active acquisition is unrealistic for most players. Both groups are covered below.

Rarity tier framework: Legendary: iconic centerpieces with <0.5% account presence. Elite: 0.5-2% presence, strong collector value. Rare: 2-5% presence, respected but not headline-tier. Value ranges per mount are shown in each card below.

The Legendary-Tier Unobtainables

These 12 mounts are the highest-value collector centerpieces. Each one on an account materially lifts market value on its own.

Original Epic Mounts — "Old School Ride"

These are the original Level 60 Epic-speed unarmored race mounts that shipped with WoW in 2004. In Patch 1.4 (May 2005) they were removed from vendors and replaced with the armored Epic mounts that exist today. Blizzard encouraged players to trade them in — the characters who didn't now own the rarest Vanilla racial skins in the game. Account-bound to the original purchasers; earning any of them grants the Old School Ride Feat of Strength.

Every Unobtainable Gladiator PvP Mount

Each WoW PvP season awards a title-gated Gladiator mount — typically 100 wins above 2400 rating in 3v3 Arena (or equivalent). Seasons end roughly every 4-6 months and their mounts are permanently removed. 38 seasons from Burning Crusade S1 through The War Within S1 are locked in 2026.

Trading Card Game Mounts (2006-2013)

The WoW Trading Card Game ran from 2006 to 2013 with physical card packs that contained code-redeemable "loot" items. When Blizzard discontinued the TCG, every remaining sealed pack became the only way to obtain these mounts. Common drops trade modestly on the secondary market; Swift Spectral Tiger is a top-tier collector centerpiece.

Twitch Drops mounts were distributed through WoW content-creator promotions and event-specific Twitch campaigns. Each had a fixed promotional window; after it closed the mount became unobtainable. What Is the Rarest WoW Mount?

Black Qiraji Battle Tank is the rarest WoW mount ever awarded. Only the first player to open the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj on each realm during the 2006 pre-event received the Scarab Lord title and the Black Qiraji Battle Tank — likely fewer than 200 copies exist account-wide. Corrupted Hippogryph is the rarest mount that more than a handful of players earned: ~5,000 accounts worldwide received it from the 2-week Scourge Invasion pre-event before Wrath of the Lich King launched in November 2008. Swift Spectral Tiger (TCG) is the rarest promotionally-distributed mount.

How Do Unobtainable Mounts Affect Account Value?

Rarity tiers translate directly to account value. A single legendary-tier unobtainable materially lifts account market value on its own. A collection of 3-5 high-tier unobtainables compounds. Mount-collector accounts with 20+ unobtainables across categories sit at the top of the verified marketplace.

How Do I Check If My Account Has Unobtainable Mounts?

The fastest way to audit your own collection is to use this article as the reference list and search against it directly in the in-game Collections tab. The search bar filters every mount you own on the fly.

  1. Open Collections (Shift+P) and click the Mounts tab.
  2. For PvP Gladiator mounts, search Gladiator in the mount search box. Every result with the "Gladiator's" prefix from a past season is an unobtainable season-gated mount — cross-reference against the Gladiator list above for season + value.
  3. For the Scarab Lord mount, search Black Qiraji. Only Black Qiraji Battle Tank is unobtainable (~150-200 accounts worldwide); the other colored Qiraji Battle Tanks are still obtainable from current content and aren't covered here.
  4. For TCG mounts, search by specific name: Spectral, Feldrake, Magic Rooster, Savage Raptor, Swift Shorestrider, Wooly White Rhino, X-51.
  5. For Twitch Drops, search Swift Spectral — that prefix covers the full Twitch Drop series (Hippogryph, Rylak, Fathom Ray, Magnetocraft, Armored Gryphon, Pterrordax, Drake).
  6. For drop-rate-locked mounts, search by specific name: Ashes of Al'ar, Invincible, Mimiron, Rivendare, Fiery Warhorse, Zulian, Razzashi.
  7. Blizzard flags some unobtainables with a golden lock icon in the Collections view — look for it on mount tooltips.
  8. Screenshot the pieces you own from the in-game Collections tab — that's the canonical proof for account resale.
  9. For a transfer-valuation estimate, use the AccountShark WoW account value calculator.
In-game is the canonical source: Your Collections pane shows exactly what's on your account — if you see a mount in-game, you own it. If a keyword above returns nothing for you, you don't. Treat this article as the master list of what to search.

What Happens If Blizzard Re-Releases an Unobtainable Mount?

Blizzard has re-released approximately 1 in 20 previously-unobtainable mounts over WoW's 22-year history — typically as recolors or Store bundles. When a mount returns, original holders lose exclusivity and the account-value premium drops meaningfully. Current policy: Blizzard does not promise any mount stays unobtainable forever but has not announced any plan to return the mounts on this list. Re-release probability is low (~5% per mount per year) but non-zero.

The re-release risk: Don't pay top-tier pricing for an unobtainable-mount account if you wouldn't still feel okay paying half that after a hypothetical re-release. For the safest long-term value, stick to mounts unobtainable for HARD reasons — TCG company dissolved, specific event window closed, legacy raid permanently reworked — rather than soft reasons like adjusted drop rates that could be buffed later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Rarest WoW Mount?

Black Qiraji Battle Tank is the rarest confirmed WoW mount. It was awarded only to the first player(s) on each realm to complete the Scarab Lord event during the original Opening of Ahn'Qiraj in 2006. Corrupted Hippogryph is the rarest mount awarded to more than a handful of players — ~5,000 accounts worldwide received it during the 2-week Scourge Invasion pre-event before Wrath of the Lich King.

How Many Unobtainable Mounts Are There in WoW?

230+ confirmed unobtainable mounts across nineteen categories as of 2026. The breakdown: 12 legendary-tier, 14 Old School Ride original epic mounts (Patch 1.4 retired), 38 PvP Gladiator seasons, 9 Mythic+ Keystone Master rewards, 1 Challenge Mode rewards, 2 retired Blizzard Shop mounts, 1 anniversary achievement rewards, 38 MoP Remix exclusives, 44 Legion Remix exclusives, 16 retired raid/seasonal drops, 4 Brawler's Guild rank rewards, 4 Blizzard 30th Anniversary bundle mounts, 12 TCG, 9 Twitch Drops, 7 Collector's Editions, 12 promotional, 0 Feats of Strength, 2 retired holiday mounts, and 7 drop-rate-locked mounts not already listed as legendary.

Are Vicious PvP Mounts Unobtainable?

No. Vicious mounts rotate through the Vicious Saddle vendor every season — you can buy an older Vicious mount using a current-season Vicious Saddle. Only the specific visual design on sale in any given season matches that season; over time all Vicious mounts remain obtainable through the rotation.

Can Unobtainable Mounts Come Back?

Rarely. Blizzard has re-released roughly 1 in 20 previously-unobtainable mounts over the game's history. The remaining 19 of 20 stay locked permanently. Blizzard does not commit to any specific mount staying unavailable forever.

How Do Unobtainable Mounts Affect Account Value?

Legendary-tier unobtainables lift account market value significantly on their own. A collection of 3-5 high-tier unobtainables compounds into a much larger lift. Mount-collector accounts with 20+ unobtainables across categories sit at the top of the verified marketplace. See the tier legend above for the full $-scale.

Is the Swift Spectral Tiger Worth Buying on an Account?

Yes, on a verified account. It's a top-tier collector centerpiece — account pricing scales with surrounding collection depth. Always verify with an in-game Collections screenshot from the seller before purchase.

What's the Difference Between a Rare and an Unobtainable Mount?

A rare mount has a low drop rate but is still farmable. An unobtainable mount has its source permanently removed — no amount of playtime can get it. Invincible (Arthas's horse) was once pure unobtainable but is now drop-rate-locked: still drops, but at about 1% per weekly kill.

What Were Scarab Lord Mounts?

The Scarab Lord title and Black Qiraji Battle Tank were awarded to the first player on each realm to open the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj in 2006. The event required a 10-hour collection quest chain; only the first player to complete the ritual and ring the scarab gong received the title and mount. Approximately 150-200 players worldwide earned it.

Do Unobtainable Mounts Transfer If I Buy an Account?

Yes. Mounts are account-bound (Warband-bound in modern WoW) and transfer intact with the account. See the WoW account buying guide for transfer specifics.

How Do I Prove I Have Unobtainable Mounts on My Account?

Screenshot your in-game Collections tab (Shift+P → Mounts) with keyword filters applied — Gladiator, Qiraji, Spectral, etc. — and include those screenshots with your account listing. In-game Collections is the canonical proof source because it shows exactly what's on the account, with no third-party intermediary.

Final Verdict

Unobtainable mounts are what give WoW accounts long-tail resale value. A 21-year-old game with accumulated collectibles creates genuine scarcity — a Gladiator mount from 2012 will never be earnable in 2026, no matter how much time you put in.

The one-sentence verdict: Don't delete an old WoW account without auditing its unobtainable mount collection — 10 minutes in the in-game Collections tab searching the keywords above on a 5-year-old account can reveal real market value you didn't know you had.
