Hunter
DPS Guide · WoW Midnight Season 1
Survival is WoW's only melee Hunter — a bomb-and-trap spec built around Kill Command, Wildfire Bomb, and the new Takedown CD that replaced Coordinated Assault. Midnight stripped Flanking Strike, compressed the tree, and elevated Aspect of the Eagle as a core ranged-stance toggle.

Why Survival Is a Dark Horse Pick

Survival sits in the Dark Horse tier — lower M+ tuning than its ranged siblings, but a legitimate raid pick with Wildfire Bomb mastery. Changes are less radical than MM's rework but still meaningful: Coordinated Assault is gone, replaced by Takedown (1:30 charge-strike with 8s +20% damage buff), and Aspect of the Eagle is now a core rotational tool for ranged bursts.

Strengths
✓ Flexible damage profile — solid single-target AND AoE in the same build
✓ Excellent mobility — no stationary casts, all instant / on-the-move
Aspect of the Eagle gives you a ranged window — play both melee and ranged
Hunter's Mark = guaranteed raid slot via 3% universal damage
✓ Cheap burst ramp — minimal setup time between pulls
Weaknesses
✗ Lowest damage of the three Hunter specs in M+ right now
✗ Requires more external healing than other classes (weak passives)
✗ Mediocre group utility outside of Hunter's Mark — no raid CDs to bring
✗ Melee-range positioning costs uptime on dodge-heavy boss mechanics
✗ Wildfire Bomb talent tree is fiddly — many interlocking bomb talents to tune

What Defines Survival's Gameplay?

Tip of the Spear + Bomb Rhythm
Charge-empower cycle with bomb layering
Survival is a melee Hunter with ranged bombs. Rotational damage comes from Kill Command (a melee-range strike, unlike BM's ranged version) and Wildfire Bomb — a thrown AoE explosive with a burning DoT.

Tip of the Spear is the core mechanic: casting Raptor Strike generates charges that empower your next Kill Command or Wildfire Bomb. Spend into the bigger hitter and loop.

Takedown (1:30 CD) replaced Coordinated Assault — charges to target, grants 50 Focus, deals heavy damage, +20% damage for 8 seconds. Align with Bombs, Kill Commands, and Boomstick for the mini-burst window.

What Are Survival's Core Abilities?

PRIMARY MELEE STRIKE
Survival's version of Kill Command is a melee-range pet strike — different from BM's ranged command. Primary damage button, consumes Tip of the Spear charges for bonus damage.
THROWN AOE EXPLOSIVE
10 Focus cost, 2-charge ability. Deals burst damage in an area + burning DoT. Tip-of-the-Spear-empowered Wildfire Bombs are one of the highest-damage AoE casts in M+ packs.
TIP OF THE SPEAR GENERATOR
Melee generator — casts generate Tip of the Spear stacks for empowering Kill Command and Wildfire Bomb. Passive Apex Talent upgrade makes it Raptor Swipe on 2+ targets for cleave damage.
NEW 1:30 BURST CD
Midnight's replacement for Coordinated Assault. Charges to target, deals heavy damage, grants 50 Focus, +20% damage for 8s. Line up with bombs + Aspect of the Eagle for the mini-burst window.
RANGED TOGGLE CD
15s ranged window — your melee abilities become ranged during the buff. Now core to the rotation: "lets us do almost all of our damage from range for significant periods" per Icy Veins.
EXECUTE + FLANKING STRIKE PROC
Execute under 20% HP. Talent procs can make Kill Shot useable above 20% for burst phases. Always priority during execute windows.

What Is the Single-Target Rotation?

Survival's priority list is a generator-spender loop — Raptor Strike generates Tip of the Spear charges, and you spend those charges into Kill Command (single-target) or Wildfire Bomb (AoE-weighted) for empowered hits.

PriorityAbilityWhen & Why
1TakedownEvery 1:30 on cooldown. Opens the 8-second burst window. Align with Aspect of the Eagle and bombs.
2Kill ShotBelow 20% HP or on proc. Highest damage per GCD — always priority when available.
3Kill Command (with Tip of the Spear)Press on cooldown, prioritize consuming Tip of the Spear stacks. Single-target highest-damage spender.
4Wildfire BombPress on cooldown, 2 charges. AoE-weighted priority — jump above Kill Command on 3+ targets.
5Raptor Strike / Raptor SwipeFiller generator. Builds Tip of the Spear charges. Raptor Swipe (Apex upgrade) on 2+ targets for cleave.
The one rule that defines Survival play: Never press empowered Kill Command or Wildfire Bomb without consuming Tip of the Spear. The empowered version is roughly 40% stronger — skipping the charge consumption is the single biggest skill-check. If Raptor Strike is on CD and no charges are up, use Mongoose Bite or fresh Raptor Strike to re-generate before spending your bomb.

How Does Survival Handle AoE in Midnight?

Survival's AoE is built on Wildfire Bomb. On 2-3 targets, single-target priority with Wildfire Bomb weighted above Kill Command. On 4+, AoE mode: Wildfire Bomb on CD, Raptor Swipe (Apex upgrade) as generator, Butchery talent as burst cleave, and Flamefang Pitch (1-min ground AoE) layered under the pack.

The Boomstick redesign replaces Fury of the Eagle with a shotgun-style 1-minute ranged CD. On 5-8 target pulls Survival's sustained AoE is competitive; above 8, Demo and Devourer scale past it.

Which Hero Talent Should Survival Pick?

Pack Leader
PET-FOCUSED BUILD
Beast-focused build that revolves around pet interactions. Stampede returns but triggers only from the first Kill Command after activating Takedown. Predictable burst feeding into the 1:30 cycle. Stronger in dungeon content where multi-target Stampede cleaves value, and synergizes with the redesigned Wild Instincts pet-stomp mechanic.
Sentinel
MARK + BOMB BUILD
Mark-based build. Tip of the Spear consumption triggers Sentinel's Mark procs on the target, which increase Wildfire Bomb damage and trigger Moonlight Chakram as a follow-up after Takedown. Higher bomb-scaling feels better on most M+ pulls and cleave raid bosses. Generally the preferred Survival pick in current logs.
The quick pick: Sentinel is the default for both raid and M+ — bomb scaling is just too good to pass up, and Moonlight Chakram's cleave follow-up after Takedown is strong. Pack Leader is a reasonable alternative for pure single-target patchwerk fights or if you prefer the pet-burst visual. Both sim within ~2-3%.

What Changed in the 2026 Survival Redesign?

Midnight brought "massive changes for all Hunter specs, primarily focused on streamlining" per Icy Veins. Survival's rework was less radical than MM's but still material:

Removed / ChangedWhy
Coordinated AssaultRemoved. Replaced by Takedown (new 1:30 charge CD with 50 Focus grant + 20% damage buff).
Flanking StrikeRemoved. Merged into Kill Command's damage baseline to reduce button count.
Fury of the Eagle → Boomstick + Flamefang Pitch (new)Boomstick replaces Fury of the Eagle (shotgun-style 1-min ranged CD). Flamefang Pitch is a new 1-minute ground-AoE pool.
Raptor Strike Apex upgradeApex Talent upgrades Raptor Strike to Raptor Swipe on 2+ targets — AoE cleave built into the generator.
Aspect of the EaglePromoted to a core rotational CD. 2-minute CD at baseline, grants full ranged capability for 15s.
Defensives + utility+2% HP baseline, Aspect of the Turtle 50% DR option, Roar of Sacrifice is now a group defensive. Counter Shot lock 3s → 5s. Hunter's Mark universal 3% raid buff.

The redesign also trimmed a dozen passive talents, folding their effects into baseline. The overall effect: Survival plays faster and cleaner, but the ceiling for optimal play is the same demanding Wildfire Bomb / Tip of the Spear juggle.

Is Survival Better for M+ or Raid?

Raid: Survival's stronger environment. Icy Veins calls it "Solid, Flexible" — excellent single-target AND AoE in one build, minimal ramp, mandatory Hunter's Mark slot. Excels on 2-4 target cleave (Vaelgor and Ezzorak, Lightblinded Vanguard) because Wildfire Bomb scales well there. Mobility wins on Crown of the Cosmos phases.

Mythic+: Weakest of the three Hunter specs per April 12 tier list — "low tuning" relative to peers. Melee range punishes on ranged-dodge fights (Nexus-Point Xenas lasers, Blinding Vale Light floors), and Wildfire Bomb's AoE trails off above 5 targets. Best M+ dungeons: Maisara Caverns (bomb layering), Windrunner Spire (open arenas).

What Utility Does Survival Bring to a Group?

Like the other Hunter specs, Survival brings thin group utility with a couple standout buttons — Hunter's Mark for raid slots, Counter Shot's extended lock, and the new group-defensive Roar of Sacrifice.

3% universal damage buff on the target for the entire group. Mandatory raid slot filler.
24s interrupt with 5s spell-lock (Midnight up from 3s). Best-in-class ranged interrupt.
Midnight redesign — now a group defensive 20% DR from a school of damage for 12s.
Thrown CC trap — 60s incapacitate on humanoids, beasts, dragonkin. Essential M+ crowd control.
Mobility gap-closer — pulls you to target + 3s root. Fantastic on chase phases.
8s immunity / 50% DR talented. Main panic button.
Removes movement impairments from an ally + 8s freedom.

What Tuning Changes Has Survival Received?

Mar 2 2026Midnight 12.0.1 redesign launchCoordinated Assault + Flanking Strike removed, Takedown added, Boomstick replaces Fury of the Eagle, Flamefang Pitch added, Aspect of the Eagle elevated.
Mar 16 2026Wildfire Bomb damage +6%Core AoE damage bump — pushed Survival up from low C to Dark Horse territory.
Mar 30 2026Takedown damage +4%, Kill Command +3%Single-target push — Survival was lagging pure ST sims behind BM.
Apr 6 2026Raptor Swipe cleave radius 8y → 10yQuality-of-life change for multi-target pulls — Raptor Swipe now reliably hits all mobs in a normal pack.
Current state: Survival is the weakest-tuned Hunter spec in Season 1, but it's not broken — it's a Dark Horse pick that over-performs in the hands of dedicated players. Expect more tuning passes through the season. The spec shines on fights with 2-4 target cleave and minimal range-forcing mechanics; it struggles on ranged-dodge-heavy encounters.

When To Pick Survival

  • You want the only melee Hunter spec in the game
  • You like bomb + trap gameplay with a charge-based burst cooldown
  • Your raid comp needs a flex spec that does single-target AND AoE in the same build
  • You want mandatory Hunter's Mark utility from a less-played Hunter spec
  • You enjoy spec identity and don't need to be meta — Survival is the Hunter specialist pick

When To Pick Something Else

  • You want to push high M+ keys → Demonology Warlock or Devourer DH
  • You want a Hunter spec with higher M+ tuning → Beast Mastery Hunter
  • You want the strongest Hunter cleave → Marksmanship Hunter (2-3 target)
  • You want pure melee melee with bigger raid utility → Enhancement Shaman or Feral Druid
  • You want safer ranged positioning → Beast Mastery or Marksmanship
