Blizzard published two PvP articles for WoW Forever on October 7: one explaining how the new PvP progression system works, and one introducing the Darkspear Islands, a brand-new 15v15 battleground off the coast of Dustwallow Marsh. Together they describe a PvP game that keeps the original rank titles and gear but drops the most punishing parts of the 2005 honor grind.

This guide puts both together: how Honor and Rank Points differ, what each rank unlocks, how gear upgrades work, how seasons and Legacy Points tie in, and how to play and gear from the Darkspear Islands. Where Blizzard has not published a number, such as exact Honor per kill or Rank Points needed per rank, this guide says so instead of guessing.

The Design Goal: Approachable and Familiar

Blizzard says its PvP pillar for Forever is "Approachable and Familiar": simplify the original Honor System while staying true to its roots. In practice that means three things:

The original ranks and titles stay, up to High Warlord for the Horde and Grand Marshal for the Alliance.
Rank progress gets a weekly cap, so the climb is about showing up over a season rather than playing around the clock.
Honor rates are evened out across battlegrounds, so you are not pushed into one map for efficiency.

That last point is a direct response to Classic history. Blizzard says it reviewed Honor gains "so acquisition rates are more consistent across the board" and that it does not want players "feeling compelled to choose Alterac Valley solely for Honor efficiency."

Honor vs Rank Points

PvP progression in Forever has two separate tracks. Understanding the difference saves a lot of confusion.

Both tracks get a boost from holiday-week battlegrounds. Blizzard says players earn increased Honor in highlighted battlegrounds during their holiday weeks, and those battlegrounds also give additional Rank Points.

A key detail: killing players gives Honor, but Blizzard's description of Rank Points lists battlegrounds and PvP quests, not world kills. If your goal is rank rather than gear, battlegrounds and PvP quests are the activities Blizzard names.

Some practical notes on the list:

The PvP Trinket at rank 2 comes very early. For anyone planning world PvP or dueling, it is the first meaningful power purchase.
Mounts at rank 11 are the iconic collection goal for many players.
Epic weapons sit alone at rank 14, the top of the ladder.

To check where you stand, open your Character Pane (C) and select the Player vs. Player tab on the right. Blizzard says it shows your rank, current Rank Points and which rewards you can buy.

How PvP Gear Works

Honor buys two PvP gear sets: one blue-quality set and one epic-quality set. The two are linked.

Buy the blue piece with Honor.
Earn the rank that unlocks that slot's Epic Upgrade Token, according to the table above.
Buy an Emboldened Seal. Seals have rank requirements you must reach first.
Combine the blue piece with the Seal to upgrade it to the epic version.

Blizzard has not published Honor costs for individual pieces or Seals yet, so budget planning has to wait for live vendors.

New Sets for Missing Specs

Blizzard also says it added new and reworked items "to fill gaps for specializations that were previously missing options." The example it gives is the Shaman, who can now get healer, melee and caster PvP sets. In original WoW, many hybrid specs had to wear PvP gear built for a different role. Blizzard has only named the Shaman example so far.

PvP Seasons and the Weekly Journey

Forever organizes PvP into seasons. During a season you earn Honor and climb ranks, and each season also has a journey with weekly tasks.

Completing weekly tasks grants Honor and Rank Points.
Three tasks per season also grant a Legacy Point.
Because those tasks are tied to the Legacy System, they remain available in future seasons, so missing a season does not lock you out.

PvP and the Legacy System

PvP is one of the largest Legacy categories. Blizzard's Legacy breakdown, covered in our Legacy Points guide, lists 12 PvP Legacy points from Honor ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14, Exalted battleground reputations, and Field of Honor Journey weeks 4, 7 and 10. The Adventure tree also has a For Great Honor perk that increases Honor from PvP.

Two cautions from Blizzard's Legacy rules: PvP Legacy challenges cannot be completed in Hardcore, and Hardcore is a separate ecosystem for battlegrounds too.

Rulesets and Battleground Queues

Blizzard's ruleset rules say battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, with Hardcore kept separate. So a Normal ruleset character and a PvP ruleset character can meet in the same battleground, even though they cannot group for dungeons or raids. Faction separation still applies.

Battle for the Darkspear Islands

The Darkspear Islands is Forever's new battleground, set off the shores of Dustwallow Marsh. The Darkspear Raiders (Horde) fight the Theramore Expeditionary Force (Alliance).

How the Map Plays

There are four capture points. The more you control, the faster your team earns points.
A flag waits in the middle of the map. Grab it and bring it to one of the bases your team has captured to score extra points.
The first team to 2000 points wins.

That combination makes the Darkspear Islands more than a pure node map. Holding two points and stalling is weaker if the other team keeps running the flag into their own bases, and a flag carrier needs a captured base nearby to score. Practical takeaways that follow from Blizzard's rules:

Do not abandon nodes to chase the flag. The flag only scores at a base your team owns, so losing nodes also removes scoring spots.
Escort the carrier toward the nearest owned base, not the farthest.
Contest the middle when the enemy holds more nodes. The flag is the swing objective.

Blizzard has not published how many points each node or flag capture awards, so ratios and timers will need to be learned on live servers.

How to Queue

You can join two ways:

Talk to a battlemaster in any major capital city.
Go to your faction's base in The Barrens: the Merchant Coast for Horde or Northwatch for Alliance, where a portal takes you into the battle.

The Barrens bases also have the reputation vendors and battleground quests.

Darkspear Islands Rewards

Each faction has its own reputation track. Vendors sell trinkets, rings, cloaks, weapons, armor pieces and consumables at different reputation thresholds. Quests turn in Marks of Honor for reputation, and reaching Exalted unlocks a short questline that rewards the faction's exclusive tabard.

Since Exalted battleground reputations are also Legacy challenges, Darkspear Islands reputation can feed both your gear and your account progress.

What Blizzard Has Not Announced Yet

Several details players will want are not in Blizzard's published PvP material yet. Treat any exact figure you see for these as unconfirmed until the live game or a Blizzard post shows it:

Rank Points needed for each rank, and the size of the weekly cap.
Honor per kill, per win or per quest, and the size of the holiday-week bonus.
Honor and Seal prices for each blue piece and each epic upgrade.
Season length and the date the first PvP season starts.
Darkspear Islands scoring: points per node, per tick or per flag capture.
Reputation amounts per Darkspear Islands quest or Mark of Honor turn-in, and the exact items at each threshold.
Which battlegrounds are available at launch besides the Darkspear Islands, and the holiday-week rotation.

Until then, plan around how the systems work rather than around specific numbers.

A Simple PvP Plan for Launch

Forever launches November 4, 2026 at 3:00 PM PST (5:00 PM CT). The Darkspear Islands open to players from level 30, so most PvP progress will start once characters are leveled. A sensible order, based only on what Blizzard has published:

Pick your ruleset with friends first. The PvP ruleset only allows one faction per account, so check our names and rulesets guide.
Do PvP quests and your weekly journey tasks every week, since they give both Honor and Rank Points and the weekly cap rewards consistency.
Prioritize battlegrounds during their holiday weeks for bonus Honor and Rank Points.
Buy the rank 2 PvP Trinket early.
Buy blue pieces with Honor, then upgrade with Emboldened Seals as your rank unlocks each slot.
Work Darkspear Raiders or Theramore reputation toward Exalted for the tabard and a Legacy challenge.
