Character create in World of Warcraft: Forever is no longer "pick a realm and pray." Blizzard replaced the old realm screen with rulesets, and it replaced single-name realm uniqueness with a two-name identity that must be unique across your region. If you are already in the Forever beta, or you are prepping a launch main for November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST, this is the decision guide for ruleset choice, faction locks, language preference, and early name reservation.
Primary sources are Blizzard's Choose Your Ruleset in World of Warcraft: Forever article and Create a Name of Your Own in WoW: Forever (posted September 21). Early reservation windows and pack eligibility also match Icy Veins' name reservation summary. For live beta status, pair this with our week 1 Forever beta guide and Known Issues field guide.
What are WoW Forever rulesets?
In Forever, the first create-screen choice is the kind of world you want, not a shard name. Blizzard's ruleset post describes each ruleset as a broad player ecosystem:
- Normal: Baseline World of Warcraft. Exploration, questing, cooperation, and PvP when you choose to engage.
- PvP: Contested territory stays dangerous. Open-world conflict is the point.
- Roleplaying: For players who want a deeper fantasy focus and like-minded adventurers.
- Hardcore: Ultimate challenge where death carries lasting consequences. Hardcore arrives sometime after launch, not on day one.
Can you group across Forever rulesets?
Short answer from Blue: mostly no.
Blizzard is explicit:
- Players can group, run dungeons, and raid with others on the same ruleset
- Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported for those activities
- Battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays separate
- Factions remain separate. Horde and Alliance still cannot group together
Battlegrounds are the soft exception for non-Hardcore rulesets. Treat that as queue population support, not as a backdoor for your raid team.
Can you switch Forever rulesets later?
No free hop. Blizzard says players cannot freely move between rulesets. To play under a different one, you create a new character in that ruleset.
Hardcore gets special death handling when it arrives:
- Hardcore stays a fully enclosed ecosystem while you are alive there
- If a Hardcore character dies, that character can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP
- Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently
- Progress, collections, and rewards earned in Hardcore can become available elsewhere
- Progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore
Forever PvP ruleset faction rules (read this twice)
On the PvP ruleset, faction choice is sticky at the account level for that ruleset:
- You may create characters for only one faction on the PvP ruleset
- Create Alliance there, and you cannot create Horde there (and the reverse)
- On Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore, you can create characters from both factions
Practical launch advice:
- Decide PvP-ruleset faction with your friends before the first create
- If you want both factions for auction or RP flavor, do that on Normal or RP, not on PvP ruleset
- Expect SoD-style create locks during messy population swings
Language preference and the realmless social layer
Forever is built as a larger realmless structure inside each ruleset. To keep language communities coherent, Blizzard added an account-wide language preference:
- Press Escape to open the Game Menu
- Choose Options
- Under System, open Languages and Social
- Set Preferred Online Language
How Forever's two-name system works
Blizzard's September 21 naming article is the source of truth. Forever characters get two names: think first name plus last or surname. Together they form a full name that must be unique within your region.
Key Blue points, kept close to their wording:
- If another player already took a first name you love, that does not automatically block you
- What matters is the complete two-name combination
- Two characters can share a first name if their full names differ
- Because Forever is realmless at a larger scale, uniqueness is regional, not single-realm
- You can hide the second name in the world: Escape > Options > Nameplates > uncheck My Secondary Name. The secondary name still appears in chat
Naming guidelines and what still gets rejected
Some classic rules still apply. Blizzard says names must follow the in-game code of conduct. Restricted words, confusing spellings, repeated-character patterns, and impersonation of Blizzard or the WoW team can still fail. The system can evaluate both parts together, so splitting a banned word across first and second name will not necessarily save it.
Desired names are not guaranteed. That line matters for reservation week.
Early Name Reservation: who, when, and how competitive it is
From Blizzard's naming article and Icy Veins' pack summary:
- Early Name Reservation runs October 27 through November 3, 2026
- It is for eligible upgrade purchases
- Names are reserved first-come, first-served
- If the full name is taken or fails requirements, choose another combo or use the random generator
- Icy Veins lists eligibility for accounts that purchase the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, or Warcraft Forever Collection
- Reservations apply to the specific WoW account that bought Forever
Beta testers should treat beta names as temporary. Forever beta characters are for feedback, not a locked launch identity. Use beta to practice the two-name flow and ruleset feel, then reserve the real combo in the October 27 window if you qualify.
Character creation checklist for beta and launch
Use this as a create-night script.
1. Pick the ruleset for your main social group
- Mostly PvE / flexible friends: Normal
- Want open-world teeth every time you leave town: PvP
- Story and etiquette first: Roleplaying
- Permadeath later: wait for Hardcore after launch, then decide with eyes open
- PvP ruleset: one faction per account on that ruleset
- Normal / RP / Hardcore: both factions allowed
- Escape > Options > Languages and Social
- Remember the 24-hour cooldown
- List 5-10 full combinations, not just first names
- Check that each full string feels unique and policy-safe
- Keep backups in case your top choice is taken at reservation open
- October 27 - November 3, 2026
- Be online at window open if the name matters to you
- Confirm you are on the correct Battle.net / WoW account
- November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST globally per Blizzard's Forever messaging
- Subscription / Game Time access rules follow Blizzard's pre-purchase articles; packs add cosmetics and early reservation, not a separate "secret realm"
- Use our how to join Forever beta and Known Issues week 1 posts while the test client is still settling
- Do not assume a beta name survives into November
| Decision | Normal / RP / Hardcore | PvP ruleset |
|---|---|---|
| Both factions on same ruleset? | Yes | No (one faction per account) |
| Group for dungeons/raids with other rulesets? | No | No |
| Battlegrounds with other rulesets? | May mix (Hardcore excluded) | May mix (Hardcore excluded) |
| Switch ruleset on same character? | No (new character) | No (new character) |
| Hardcore available at launch? | After launch | After launch |
How to choose a ruleset without regretting November
Choose Normal if your friends are mixed PvE players, you want the least surprising social graph, and you like opt-in PvP rather than constant contested pressure.
Choose PvP if world PvP is the content, your friend group agrees on one faction, and you accept SoD-style create balance tools.
Choose Roleplaying if naming, etiquette, and fantasy presentation are part of why you log in. The two-name system is especially friendly here.
Wait on Hardcore if you want permadeath stakes but do not want to bet launch week on a mode that Blizzard says arrives later. Level and learn systems on Normal or RP, then roll Hardcore with intention when it opens. Remember death can transfer you out, including to PvP, and Hardcore progress can move outward while other rulesets do not feed Hardcore.
Guild officers should publish the ruleset decision in Discord before pack buyers hit reservation week. A split guild across Normal and PvP rulesets is two guilds for raid purposes.
Name brainstorming tips that respect Blue's system
- Prioritize the full combo, not owning a legendary first name alone
- Use the second name for family, place, title-flavored identity, or guild theme
- Avoid borderline words; the checker looks at both halves together
- If you plan to hide the secondary name in the world, still pick a chat-safe second name, because chat still shows it
- Keep a printed or phone list for October 27. Reservation is first-come, first-served
How this fits the Forever beta timeline
Forever beta is already live for testers. Week 1 coverage lives in our beta now live guide and known issues guide. Use beta to feel ruleset social density, language preference, and the two-name UI. Do not burn emotional energy defending a beta string as if it were the November reservation.
Calendar the real milestones:
- Now through mid-October: beta testing and feedback
- October 27 - November 3: Early Name Reservation for eligible pack buyers
- November 4, 3:00 p.m. PST: Forever launch
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the WoW Forever two-name system?
Each Forever character has two names, similar to a first name and a surname. Blizzard says the complete two-name combination must be unique within your region. Individual first or second names can be shared as long as the full combination differs.
Are Forever character names unique per realm or per region?
Per region. Forever's realmless structure moves uniqueness up from a single realm to the regional level, which is why the two-name design exists.
Can I hide my second name in Forever?
Yes. Open the Game Menu with Escape, go to Options, then Nameplates, and uncheck My Secondary Name. Blizzard notes the secondary name will no longer display in the world but will still appear in chat.
What Forever rulesets exist at launch?
Normal, PvP, and Roleplaying are described as available ruleset choices. Hardcore is listed as available sometime after launch.
Can Forever characters group across rulesets for dungeons and raids?
No. Blizzard says cross-ruleset grouping is not supported for grouping, dungeons, and raids. Battlegrounds may mix players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which remains separate. Factions also stay separate.
Can I move my Forever character to another ruleset?
Not freely. You need a new character on the other ruleset. When Hardcore is live, a Hardcore death can allow that character to transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets with Hardcore's one-way progress rules.
What is the PvP ruleset faction restriction?
On the PvP ruleset, you can only create characters for one faction per account. Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore allow both factions. PvP ruleset population tools are described as similar to Season of Discovery faction create limits.
When is Early Name Reservation for WoW Forever?

Icy Veins lists Skyborne Heroic, Skyborne Epic, and the Warcraft Forever Collection as qualifying purchases. Reservations apply to the WoW account that bought Forever.
When does World of Warcraft: Forever launch?
