Priests and Warriors were the second pair in Blizzard's WoW Forever class deep dive series, published September 30. The two classes could not be more different, one built on Light, Shadow and healing and the other on weapons, Rage and stances, but the direction is the same: keep the class recognizable, make important tools available to everyone, and give every tree a clearer identity.
This guide breaks down the confirmed changes, what each one does in practice, and how they affect a launch main. Blizzard says abilities and talents can still change during the beta, which runs until October 21, so read tuning values as current rather than locked.
Shared Talent Rules
Every class in Forever uses the same talent framework:
- Talents unlock at level 10.
- Gold medal milestones remain at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new 16-point milestone.
- Talents, including Legacy talents, are changed at a class trainer in a major city.
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Priest Changes at a Glance
Blizzard's Priest goal is flexibility across Discipline, Holy and Shadow without losing the class's identity as the most versatile healer in the game. The biggest single change is that the old race lock on key Priest spells is gone.
| Ability | Change | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Fear Ward | Available to all Priests regardless of race | 20 |
| Devouring Plague | Available to all Priests regardless of race | 20 |
| Divine Spirit | Now baseline | 30 |
| Shadow Word: Death | New baseline; instant Shadow damage, 10% max health backlash if the target survives, 15-second cooldown | 32 |
| Fade | Threat reduction doubled | Existing |
| Prayer of Healing | Heals the target's party and pets instead of the Priest's own party | Existing |
| Renew | Multiple Priests can keep Renew on the same target | Existing |
The Prayer of Healing change is a quiet raid upgrade. A Priest no longer has to sit in the group they want to heal, which makes raid group assignments much easier to manage.
New and Reworked Priest Racial Spells
Each Priest race still has two unique spells, but Blizzard re-evaluated all of them and added a Gnome kit.
| Race | Spell 1 | Spell 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Gnome | Confounding Flash (10): confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds, broken by damage, 2-minute cooldown | Contingency Plan (20): 30-second ward that triggers an absorb shield and HoT below 35% health, 5-minute cooldown |
| Dwarf | Desperate Prayer: unchanged | Chastise (20): damages and immobilizes a Humanoid for 2 seconds, 2-minute cooldown |
| Human | Divine Grace (10): instant heal on a target below 50% health that removes Weakened Soul, 5-minute cooldown | Feedback: unchanged |
| Night Elf | Starshards (10): damage increased substantially, now a 30-second cooldown | Elune's Grace (20): 50% less chance to be hit by melee and ranged for 15 seconds or 3 misses, 5-minute cooldown |
| Troll | Hex of Weakness: unchanged | Shadowguard: unchanged |
| Undead | Touch of Weakness: unchanged | Dark Sacrifice (20): trade health for Mana over time, scaled by Spirit |
Because Fear Ward is no longer locked to one race, your race choice for a Priest is now about these racial pairs rather than one mandatory raid spell. Human's Divine Grace and Gnome's Contingency Plan are both strong healing tools; Dwarf's Chastise and Night Elf's Elune's Grace lean more toward survival and PvP.
Discipline Talent Highlights
- Power in Light (new, row 1) boosts Smite and Penance damage on targets with your Holy Fire.
- Twin Disciplines (new, row 1) increases damage and healing from instant spells.
- Silent Resolve now also shortens Stun, Fear and Silence on you, absorbing the old Unbreakable Will.
- Holy Precision adds up to 18% hit chance with Holy spells so healers do not need hit gear.
- Mental Agility moves to row 3, costs 3 points, and also discounts Smite and Holy Fire.
- Meditation gets a substantial boost to Mana from Spirit.
- Soul Warding is the 16-point gold medal talent, reducing Power Word: Shield's cooldown and cost.
- Penance is the 21-point gold medal talent: a 2-second channel, 12-second cooldown, that damages enemies or heals allies every second.
- Renewed Hope (new) raises crit on direct heals and Penance against Weakened Soul targets and shortens Weakened Soul.
- Divine Aegis creates a 12-second absorb shield from critical heals.
Holy Talent Highlights
- Twilight Focus (formerly Healing Focus) gives pushback protection on all casts for 3 points.
- Blessed Recovery also triggers from any single hit above 30% of your max health.
- Inspiration triggers from all non-periodic critical heals.
- Searing Light now boosts all Holy damage and can make your next Holy Nova free after Holy Fire damage.
- Binding Heal is the 16-point gold medal talent: heals you and your target, 1.5-second cast, no cooldown, tuned to be as good as Flash Heal even when you need no healing.
- Litany of Light refunds part of a heal's Mana cost when it differs from the previous heal you cast.
- Spiritual Healing needs only 3 points.
- Prayer of Mending is the 31-point gold medal talent: a 10-second cooldown, 30-second spell that heals on damage or non-periodic healing, then jumps to a party or raid member within 20 yards, up to 5 heals total.
Shadow Talent Highlights
- Shadow Focus moves to row 1 and adds hit chance for Shadow spells.
- Shadow Reach moves to row 2 and needs 2 points.
- Improved Mind Flay (new) raises Mind Flay damage and range but weakens its slow.
- Vampiric Embrace becomes the 16-point gold medal talent, lasting 30 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown.
- Shadow Weaving now benefits only the casting Priest, at a moderately lower bonus.
- Devouring Contagion (new) cheapens Devouring Plague and makes it jump to a new enemy within 5 yards when the target dies.
- Early Demise (new) adds Shadow Word: Death crit chance under 20% health.
- Shadowform allows all non-healing spells, cuts Shadow spell Mana costs by 50% and raises Shadow crit damage by 100%, with a lower flat damage bonus.
Warrior Changes at a Glance
Blizzard opens the Warrior section by acknowledging Rage generation bugs in the beta and says tracking down the root cause could take a couple of weeks. With that caveat, here is the confirmed design.
The Rage Rework
| Rage source | Forever rule |
|---|---|
| Taking damage | Original formula, but Armor is ignored; calculated as if you always had 50% damage reduction from Armor |
| Absorbs | Ignored, so Power Word: Shield no longer reduces your Rage |
| Dealing damage | Fully normalized to the speed of the weapon that dealt the damage |
| Critical strikes | Deep dive: 75% more Rage. Oct 1 beta update: raised to 100% more |
The October 1 beta development notes, posted by Blizzard on October 2, raised the critical strike Rage bonus from 75% to 100%. That is the most recent official number. In practice, the rework means a tank stacking Armor no longer starves for Rage, and a Warrior with a shield-wielding Priest in the group no longer loses Rage to absorbs.
Baseline Warrior Changes
| Ability | Change |
|---|---|
| Tactical Mastery | Baseline at level 14, keep 10 Rage on stance change |
| Victory Rush | Baseline at level 20, usable for 20 seconds after a non-trivial kill, heals 10% max health, 30-second cooldown |
| Recklessness, Retaliation, Shield Wall | No longer share cooldowns; Retaliation and Shield Wall now 15 minutes |
| Rend | Significant Attack Power scaling |
| Thunder Clap | Attack Power scaling, usable in Defensive Stance, 6-second cooldown, lower threat |
| Battle Shout | Lower base bonus, Improved Battle Shout baked in |
| Sunder Armor | Usable over a stronger Expose Armor; threat scales with Attack Power |
Victory Rush is the leveling headline. It gives Warriors the self-healing they never had in the original game, which should cut downtime between pulls. Blizzard's own class summary still says Warriors "lack the tools to easily recover from taking too much damage", so do not expect it to replace food.
Arms Talent Highlights
- Improved Tactical Mastery raises retained Rage by 3 per point, up to 25.
- Improved Overpower moves to row 2.
- Spearing Strike is the 16-point gold medal talent: 15 Rage, 20-second cooldown, dismounts the target and deals double damage to mounted targets, Dragons and Giants.
- Bloodthrill (new) gives main-hand hits on Rend targets a chance to enable Overpower.
- Weaponmaster (new) replaces all weapon specializations: Axes and Polearms give crit, Maces and Staves ignore armor, Swords grant extra swings.
- Improved Slam moves to Arms, costs 2 points, and stops Slam from delaying your auto attack.
Fury Talent Highlights
- Unbridled Rage has a higher chance and grants 2 Rage with two-handers.
- Improved Cleave now cuts Cleave's Rage cost.
- Boundless Rage (new) raises max Rage.
- Raging Blows is the 16-point gold medal talent: Whirlwind hits with both weapons when dual-wielding.
- Enrage can trigger from any damage taken.
- Death Wish now increases damage taken instead of lowering Armor and resistances.
- Bloodthirst no longer heals; it grants 10% movement speed for 10 seconds instead.
Protection Talent Highlights
- Shield Specialization now generates 5 Rage on Block procs.
- Master of Defense (new) can give 5 Rage on Dodge or Parry with a shield.
- Improved Revenge increases Revenge damage instead of stunning.
- Defiance requires a shield for its threat bonus.
- Vanguard is the 16-point gold medal talent: Charge in Defensive Stance.
- Bastion (new) increases all damage with a shield equipped.
- Focused Rage (new) reduces Rage cost on offensive abilities.
- Shield Slam scales more from Block Value.
Picking Between Them for Launch
Both classes will be in demand. Blizzard describes the Priest as "an asset for any party or raid" and says "any party or raid is happy to add a Warrior". A Priest is the stronger choice if you want healing flexibility and new racial tools; a Warrior is the choice if you want to tank, and the Rage changes make that smoother than it has ever been. Pair your pick with the Legacy Points guide so your account perks support it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Priest use Fear Ward in WoW Forever?
Yes. Fear Ward is available to all Priests at level 20 regardless of race, and so is Devouring Plague.
Do Priests get Shadow Word: Death in WoW Forever?
Yes. It is a new baseline ability at level 32 with a 15-second cooldown. If the target survives, you take 10% of your max health in damage.
What are the new Gnome Priest racial spells?
Gnome Priests get Confounding Flash at level 10, which confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds, and Contingency Plan at level 20, a 30-second ward that triggers an absorb and a heal below 35% health.
Does Prayer of Healing still only heal your own group?
No. In Forever it heals all members of the target's party, including pets, rather than the Priest's own party.
Is Penance in WoW Forever?
Yes. Penance is Discipline's 21-point gold medal talent, a 2-second channel with a 12-second cooldown that can damage enemies or heal allies.
Does Armor reduce Warrior Rage in WoW Forever?
No. Rage from taking damage ignores Armor and absorbs; Blizzard calculates it as if you always had 50% damage reduction from Armor.
How much extra Rage do critical strikes give Warriors?
The September 30 deep dive said 75% more Rage. Blizzard's October 1 beta development notes raised it to 100% more Rage than a non-critical hit.
Do Warriors get Victory Rush in WoW Forever?
Yes. Victory Rush is learned at level 20, becomes usable for 20 seconds after you kill a non-trivial enemy, heals 10% of max health and has a 30-second cooldown.
What replaced Warrior weapon specialization talents?
Weaponmaster, a new Arms row 5 talent, combines them. Axes and Polearms grant crit, Maces and Staves ignore some armor, and Swords can grant extra auto attacks.
Do Recklessness, Retaliation and Shield Wall still share a cooldown?
No. They are fully separate in Forever, and Retaliation and Shield Wall have a 15-minute cooldown.
