Blizzard's October 7 deep dive covered the Mage and the Shaman, and it is the most mechanically dense entry in the series so far. Mages get a true hybrid spell and a Hot Streak style talent. Shaman get the biggest totem overhaul any version of original-era WoW has seen, plus a redesigned Elemental tree without Elemental Mastery.
Here is what changed, what Blizzard says each change is for, and what it means for your launch character. Blizzard notes that abilities and talents may keep changing through the beta, so check current tooltips before you commit.
Shared Talent Rules
- Talents unlock at level 10, with gold medal milestones at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. The 16-point milestone is new.
- Change talents, including Legacy talents, at a class trainer in a major city.
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Mage: The Right Spell at the Right Time
Blizzard's pitch for the Mage is choosing the right school for the moment: Frost for control, Fire for big crits, Arcane to amplify the rest of your kit, and new talents that make cross-school builds viable.
Mage Baseline Changes
| Ability | Change |
|---|---|
| Comprehension | New Mage-only minor tradeskill to read scrolls dropped by creatures |
| Comprehend Scroll | The ability used for Comprehension, in the General spellbook tab |
| Frostfire Bolt | New at level 40, 3-second cast, counts as both Fire and Frost |
| Cone of Cold | Duration decreased to curb kiting by gold farmers and boosters |
| Mage Armor | Mana regeneration from Spirit increased |
| Magic Attunement | Now baseline |
Blizzard does not list what Comprehension scrolls give. It only says "various benefits" that players will discover, so treat it as a world discovery system rather than something to plan a build around.
Frostfire Bolt and Hybrid Builds
Frostfire Bolt is the key to the whole Mage update. It deals large upfront damage like Fireball, applies a debuff with damage over time and a movement Slow, and:
- Most talents that benefit Fire or Frost also benefit Frostfire Bolt.
- It always uses the higher of your Fire or Frost spell damage bonus.
- It uses the lower of the target's Fire or Frost resistance.
Arcane Talent Highlights
- Wand Specialization needs 2 points.
- Arcane Focus now grants hit chance with Arcane spells.
- Improved Channeling (formerly Improved Arcane Missiles) also protects Arcane Blast from pushback.
- Arcane Concentration procs less often from much lower rank spells, a fix Blizzard says targets gold farmers "fishing" for procs. Blizzard adds that similar free-effect talents across classes get the same penalty.
- Arcane Geometry (new, row 3) increases Arcane spell range.
- Arcane Impact (formerly Improved Arcane Explosion) raises crit on all Arcane spells.
- Arcane Blast is the 11-point gold medal talent: a 2.5-second cast that increases damage of all other Mage spells and its own Mana cost, stacking 4 times for 8 seconds or until another spell is cast. Blizzard redesigned it so you build stacks and then cast something else.
- Missile Barrage is the 16-point gold medal talent: Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt can make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast for free, with double the chance from Arcane Blast.
- Arcane Mind now increases Intellect and Arcane crit damage.
- Arcane Power now requires Presence of Mind.
Fire Talent Highlights
- Wake of Fire (formerly Improved Fire Blast) moves to row 1, cuts Fire Blast's cooldown further, and boosts its crit chance after a non-trivial kill.
- Incineration moves to row 1 and adds crit chance to Ice Lance and Arcane Blast as well as Fire Blast and Scorch.
- Ignite is now a unique debuff per Mage, fixing threat and damage attribution, with Season of Discovery style protection against lost damage.
- Improved Scorch's debuff now benefits only the casting Mage.
- Burning Soul needs 3 points.
- Heating Up (new, row 4) requires Pyroblast. Non-periodic crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch cut your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, stacking 3 times down to a 1.5-second Pyroblast. Blizzard calls it Forever's take on Hot Streak.
- Blast Wave no longer requires Pyroblast.
Frost Talent Highlights
- Elemental Precision now adds hit chance to Fire and Frost spells.
- Permafrost extends Chill effects by 11/22/33% instead of flat seconds.
- Ice Lance is the 11-point gold medal talent: instant, low damage, but 300% more against Frozen targets.
- Improved Blizzard now caps at a 40% Slow, down from 65%, again to cut AoE farming.
- Ice Block moves to row 4 as the 16-point gold medal talent.
- Cold Snap moves to row 5 as the 21-point gold medal talent, with its cooldown raised to 10 minutes.
- Fingers of Frost (new, row 5) gives Chill effects a chance to grant 1 or 2 charges that treat the target as Frozen.
- Winter's Chill now benefits only the casting Mage and only affects Frostbolt and Ice Lance.
The Anti-Farming Theme
Three Mage changes, Cone of Cold, Improved Blizzard and Arcane Concentration, are explicitly aimed at gold farmers and boosters. If your leveling plan was Classic-style AoE farming, expect it to be weaker in Forever. That lines up with Blizzard's wider stance on RMT covered in our WoW Forever economy guide.
Shaman: Totems in the Flow of Combat
Blizzard's Shaman goal is to cut repeated setup so totem placement and timing become live decisions instead of chores.
Totem and Imbue Overhaul
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Totem global cooldown | 1.0 second, down from 1.5 |
| Persistent buff totems | Last 5 minutes, up from 2 |
| Totem tracking UI | Shows active totems and timers; right-click to unsummon |
| Resistance totems | Apply to the whole raid group |
| Weapon imbues | Last 60 minutes, up from 5; stack with stones and oils |
| Fire Nova | Totem removed; new spell erupts at your current Fire Totem |
| Windfury Totem | Party-wide buff, not a weapon enchant; exclusive with Grace of Air and Flametongue Totem |
| Flametongue Totem | Party-wide buff; exclusive with Windfury Totem |
| Tranquil Air Totem | Removed |
New Totem Tools
| Ability | Level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Totemic Recall | 20 | Destroys all your totems and refunds 25% of their Mana |
| Call of the Elements | 20 | Unlocks the totem bar; summons a preset of 4 totems after a 3-second cast |
| Totemic Projection | 22 | Teleports all totems up to 30 yards, 1-minute cooldown, 25% base Mana |
| Call of the Spirits | 30 | A second preset of 4 totems |
| Call of the Ancestors | 40 | A third preset of 4 totems |
Blizzard flagged a beta bug where Totemic Recall was not refunding Mana. Lightning Bolt ranks 4 and up also drop to a 2.5-second cast, and Chain Lightning to 2 seconds, with lower coefficients to match.
Elemental Combat Talent Highlights
The big news is that Elemental Mastery is removed. Blizzard says it held the spec back: they could not raise Elemental PvE damage without making it too strong in PvP.
- Elemental Devastation moves to row 2 to tempt Enhancement into Elemental points.
- Elemental Alacrity (formerly Lightning Mastery) moves to row 3, maxes at 3 points, and trims 0.5 seconds from Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst.
- Eye of the Storm now gives pushback resistance on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst at all times.
- Call of Thunder is the 16-point gold medal talent, 3% crit on Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning.
- Lightning Overload (new, row 5) can instantly cast a free half-damage copy of Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning.
- Earthbound is the 21-point gold medal talent: Earthbind Totem immobilizes nearby targets for 5 seconds when cast.
- Lava Burst is the 31-point gold medal talent: 2.5-second cast, 20% more damage on Flame Shocked targets, 10-second cooldown.
Enhancement Talent Highlights
- Thundering Strikes moves to row 1 and boosts crit on all spells and attacks.
- Mental Dexterity (new) converts Intellect into Attack Power.
- Improved Ghost Wolf rank 2 makes Ghost Wolf instant.
- Shamanistic Focus is the 11-point gold medal talent, cutting Shock and Lightning Shield costs.
- Stormstrike moves to the 16-point slot, cooldown 8 seconds, buffing your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock by 20%.
- Spirit Weapons adjusts threat based on whether Rockbiter Weapon is active, so Enhancement can still off-tank.
- Maelstrom Weapon (new, row 6) stacks charges that can make Lightning Bolt instant.
- Rage of the Farseer is the 31-point gold medal talent: 30% attack speed for 25 seconds on a 3-minute cooldown, inspired by Heroism and Bloodlust but personal.
Restoration Talent Highlights
- Totemic Focus also discounts Totemic Projection and Call spells.
- Mindfulness (new) allows Spirit regeneration while casting.
- Water Shield is the 11-point gold medal talent, returning Mana when hit or on critical heals.
- Mana Tide Totem moves down to the 16-point slot.
- Restorative Totems doubles its Healing Stream bonus.
- Riptide is the 31-point gold medal talent: an instant heal plus HoT over 15 seconds, 25% stronger Chain Heal on Riptide targets, 6-second cooldown.
What It Means for Launch
Mages keep their role as ranged AoE and control specialists, with Polymorph and food and water still making them welcome everywhere, but the new hybrid tools mean you can build more than one way. Shaman keep their utility identity while losing a large part of the totem busywork. Blizzard also notes Shaman still lack effective crowd control, and Mages remain fragile in melee range.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Frostfire Bolt in WoW Forever?
It is a new Mage spell learned at level 40 that counts as both Fire and Frost. It uses your higher Fire or Frost spell damage and the target's lower Fire or Frost resistance.
What is the Mage Comprehension skill?
Comprehension is a new Mage-only minor tradeskill. You use Comprehend Scroll to read scrolls dropped by creatures, and Blizzard says they provide various benefits to be discovered in game.
Does WoW Forever have Hot Streak for Fire Mages?
The deep dive introduced Heating Up, which reduces Pyroblast's cast time by 25% per stack, up to 3 stacks. Beta development notes also reference a Hot Streak buff with a 20-second duration, so check the launch tooltip.
Why was Improved Blizzard nerfed?
Blizzard reduced its Slow to 40% from 65% to limit Frost Mage AoE farming, which gold farmers and boosters used heavily.
How long do Shaman totems last in WoW Forever?
Totems that give persistent buffs last 5 minutes instead of 2, and every totem has a 1.0-second global cooldown.
Can Shaman drop all four totems at once?
Yes. Call of the Elements at level 20 summons a preset of 4 totems after a 3-second cast, and Call of the Spirits (30) and Call of the Ancestors (40) add two more presets.
Do Shaman weapon imbues stack with Wizard Oil?
Yes. All imbues last 60 minutes and can be active alongside temporary enchantments such as Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones and Wizard Oil.
Is Elemental Mastery in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard removed it, saying they could not raise Elemental PvE damage to appropriate levels while keeping it without making the spec too strong in PvP. Lava Burst is the new 31-point talent.
Is Windfury Totem still a weapon enchant?
No. Windfury Totem is now a party-wide buff, and it cannot be active alongside Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem.
Can Enhancement Shaman tank in WoW Forever?
Blizzard designed Spirit Weapons and Improved Stormstrike so Enhancement can serve as a temporary tank in small groups, with higher threat while Rockbiter Weapon is active.
