Best Leveling Spec for TBC Classic Hunter
Beast Mastery is the only correct answer for leveling a TBC Hunter. Beast Mastery is the rare build that is simultaneously the best questing spec, the best dungeon spec, and the highest-parse raid spec in the game.
The three specs are not interchangeable, though. Here is the honest breakdown:
Best Races for a TBC Hunter
Seven of eight races can roll Hunter in TBC — everyone except Humans, Gnomes, and Undead. For BM PvE, Orc edges out every other race through Command (+5% pet damage). For Alliance, Draenei's Heroic Presence aura gives your whole party +1% hit, which is valuable for a Hit-dependent class.

Hunters share more in common with casters than physical DPS — you have mana, spell pushback, and everything scales off a single stat (Agility). But you also share the special attack table with melee classes: your shots roll against hit/dodge/parry just like a Warrior's Mortal Strike. Understanding the intersection is what separates a good Hunter from a bad one.
Pet System
Your pet is half your character. In TBC, pets have their own stable (5 slots), happiness (red/green mood), XP (they level with you), and talent trees (added in patch 2.3 — 18 talents per pet). Pet DPS is 20-30% of your total DPS as BM.
Pet families and their unique stats (10 total families, each with a damage/armor/HP multiplier):
- Cat / Ravager / Wind Serpent / Dragonhawk — the top-tier DPS families. Pick one of these at endgame.
- Boar / Carrion Bird / Gorilla / Bat — balanced families, solid leveling choices.
- Bear / Turtle / Crab — tank families, highest armor. Good for solo elite quests.

Ammo and Quivers
Your bow/crossbow needs arrows; your gun needs bullets. The ammo stack sits in a Quiver or Ammo Pouch (bag slot), and the bag itself grants +15% ranged attack speed (quiver) or equivalent bullet-speed bonus. Never level without one.
Ammo quality matters. At endgame, Adamantite Stinger (arrows) and Adamantite Shells (bullets) are vendor-bought from Outland engineering trainers — they replace every farmed ammo below.
Aspects
Aspects are stances — one active at a time, free to swap. Each fits a specific role:
The Dead Zone
5-8 yards from your target is the dead zone. You can't ranged-attack (too close) and you can't melee (not adjacent). Every Hunter dies at least once to this. The fix is positioning discipline — keep the target at 10+ yards or step adjacent for Raptor Strike / Wing Clip.
Disengage adds distance;
Wing Clip slows the mob to 50% to let you back out.
Steady Shot Weaving
At level 62 you train
Steady Shot — the single most important ability unlock of your entire leveling experience. Auto Shot has a 2.8-3.0s "cast" (actually the time to nock the next arrow after a shot). Steady Shot is a 1.5s instant-ish cast that fits between auto shots. The weave:
- Auto shot fires.
- In the 1.3-1.5s window before the next auto shot, cast Steady Shot.
- Next auto shot fires immediately after Steady Shot resolves.
Leveling Stat Priority
Hunters scale on Agility primarily — 1 AGI = 1 Ranged AP for Hunters and also boosts your crit chance (~50 AGI = 1% crit at 70). Your secondary scaling is through hit rating and AP.
Talent Build Progression: 1 → 70
The Beast Mastery leveling path is almost linear — you pour every point into BM until 41, then spill into Marksmanship for hit and crit talents.

Core Leveling Rotation
BM's rotation is pet-first. Your pet does most of the damage early; you fill the DPS gap with sting + shots.
Solo Questing

Outland Leveling Path 58 → 70
- Hellfire Peninsula (58-62): Dark Portal intro rewards a free 58-item green bow. Clear Thrallmar/Honor Hold + Temple of Telhamat/Falcon Watch hubs. Hellfire Ramparts at 60-62 for instant dungeon XP.
- Zangarmarsh (60-64): Cenarion Expedition hub chain is pure XP. Tame a Ravager here for your endgame pet.
- Terokkar Forest (62-65): Shattrath City becomes your hub. Pick Aldor or Scryer. Don't do Ring of Blood yet.
- Nagrand (64-67): Best questing zone in Outland. Ring of Blood (5-man gauntlet, massive XP).
- Blade's Edge Mountains (65-68): Ogri'la daily hub opens at 70 — ignore while leveling.
- Netherstorm (67-70): Area 52 + Manaforge chain carry you to 70.
Dungeons Worth Running
Hunter Class Quests
- Level 10: Taming the Beast — Your first class quest. Visit your trainer in capital. Three follow-up quests tame three different starter pets, teaching you the Tame Beast cast and Call Pet commands. You get a permanent pet and a new UI bar.
- Level 20: Eagle Eye / Flare — Free ability training quest.
- Level 50: Rhok'delar / Lok'delar (removed in TBC 2.4) — The original quivered-bow quest from vanilla Molten Core is disabled in TBC Classic 2.4. Skip.
- Level 60-70: Hunter does NOT have a unique class quest like Priest's Benediction or Rogue's poisons — just gear up.

Marksmanship — Endgame Deep Dive
MM is the raid-utility spec — Trueshot Aura gives the party +AP, and Silencing Shot is a mandatory interrupt on spell-heavy bosses. DPS is 5-10% behind BM but the utility is strong enough for 1 MM per 25m raid.
Build: 7/54/0. Focus points in MM for Silencing Shot (41-pt), Master Marksman (5/5), and improved Trueshot Aura.
Rotation priority: Aimed Shot on cooldown → Multi-Shot on cooldown → Steady Shot filler → Serpent Sting maintained. No Kill Command (BM-only).
Stats: Same as BM — hit cap 142 → Agility → RAP → crit.
Survival — Endgame Deep Dive
SV became viable in TBC with Expose Weakness — 25% of your Agility becomes flat AP for the whole melee party. In 10-melee raid comps this is a massive raid-wide buff.
Build: 0/20/41 or 7/14/40. Core: Expose Weakness, Improved Hunter's Mark 5/5, Lightning Reflexes, Master Tactician, Wyvern Sting for PvP.
Rotation: Serpent Sting spam for Expose Weakness uptime → Steady Shot → Auto Shot. Lower personal DPS than BM but the raid gains 3-5% from your buffs.
Reputation Priorities
- Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Glyph of Ferocity head enchant at Revered. #1 priority.
- Cenarion Expedition — Mail gear upgrades, good at Friendly/Honored.
- Aldor or Scryer — Shoulder inscription (Vengeance for Aldor).
- Kurenai / Mag'har — Talbuk/wolf mounts + AGI gear.
- Violet Eye — Karazhan rings at Honored/Revered.
