Quick Answer · MW4 Launch Patch Notes · Oct 21
• Source: Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 4 Launch Patch Notes on callofduty.com, dated October 21, 2026. Full launch is Friday, October 23.
• TTK: Beta Weekend 2 time-to-kill stays. SMGs are stronger up close to mid range, one-hit-kill weapons get more flinch and damage tuning, and every weapon got a balance pass.
• Movement: Tactical Sprint still lives on the Blood Rush perk (now Perk 2), with no sprint-out penalty and "single tap run" as the default input.
• Killstreaks: 17 streaks, attachable per loadout. UAV still costs 5 kills (4 with Hardline) but its health goes from 100 to 150. Wheelson is more aggressive.
• Content: 20 maps (12 core 6v6, 3 Ground War, 4 Gunfight, Kill Block), 33 weapons, 33 Operators, new modes Inflation, Hijack, Collateral and Combat Outpost. Infected and Possession arrive next week.
• Also: two Prestige paths, shared attachments, Weapon Prestige, optic rail placement, no Weekly Challenges in Season 1, plus DMZ fixes dated Oct 20 and 21.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is one day from its full launch, and Infinity Ward has published the notes that tell us what the game will actually feel like on Friday. The Modern Warfare 4 Launch Patch Notes, dated October 21, 2026, cover every change made since the Multiplayer Beta: weapon tuning, movement, perks, spawns, killstreaks and a long list of DMZ fixes from the current early access window.

If you are still sorting out editions, preload and unlock dates, our Modern Warfare 4 launch guide covers all of that. This post is about the gameplay changes. I am sticking to what Infinity Ward wrote, and I flag my own opinions where I give them.

When Modern Warfare 4 Launches

The full game releases on Friday, October 23, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC) and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision's PC specs post said the game unlocks at midnight local time, so most players in the US can start on Thursday night into Friday. Campaign Early Access opened on October 16 and DMZ Early Access on October 20 for digital pre-orders. Multiplayer is the big new piece on Friday for everyone.

Infinity Ward's notes also remind players to preload and make sure the required content packs are installed. Pre-installation started rolling out on October 14 at 9 PM PT, which was 11 PM CT. On PS5 and other platforms with automatic downloads, the install may start without asking which content you want, so check your installed packs before the launch window.

Time-to-Kill: Weekend 2 Wins

The biggest question coming out of the beta was TTK. Infinity Ward says it got a lot of feedback during the first beta weekend, so it "swung hard" on changes for Weekend 2. Gunfights in Weekend 2 gave players more breathing room, and the team says that version was strongly preferred by all skill levels. That is the TTK shipping at launch.

The studio is honest that it did not get the balance between weapons and classes right in the beta. Since then, it says, it has done a deep balance pass across every weapon. The launch notes summarize the direction like this:

  • SMGs are more efficient in close to mid-range fights.
  • Powerful one-hit-kill weapons are tempered with more flinch and damage tuning.
  • Every weapon got a balance pass so your pick is "a choice, not a requirement."
  • Every attachment was reviewed so Gunsmith stays flexible and balanced.
  • Advanced Weapon Stats are available at launch, so you can see the real numbers.
The notes do not list per-weapon damage values, so I cannot tell you exact numbers. My read: if you liked the slightly slower Weekend 2 pace, you should feel at home. If you ran snipers or one-shot marksman builds, expect more flinch when you get hit while aiming.

Infinity Ward also lists three weapon pillars it designed around: Distinction (each class has a clear role), Balance (every tool can win) and Feel (weapons should feel visceral and fun).

The 33 Launch Weapons

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 33 weapons across Primary, Secondary and Melee. Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4, and you use Default Loadouts before that.

ClassWeapons at launch
Assault Rifles (8)Han 86, M4, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Kastov 762, Oden, Axion, Cronen Squall
SMGs (5)ISO Nightshade, VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx
Shotguns (2)Rezi 12, Warlord
LMGs (3)Finn LMG, Type 73, APOC-338
Marksman Rifles (3)MAR-9, Oris 8.6, Mosin-Nagant
Sniper Rifles (3)KG-7 Vulcan, Astaroth .57, Signal 50
Pistols (4)Sang 9mm, Krait P68, .50 GS, Mojave .357
Launchers (4)PILA, RPG-8, JOKR, PM-40 Anvil
Melee (1)FSS Carbon Edge 1095

The patch notes list the four launchers right after the pistols under Secondary without a separate heading, so I have labeled them Launchers here.

Weapon Progression and Weapon Prestige

Infinity Ward is leaning hard on shared attachments. Once you unlock a shared attachment, it is available on every weapon that can use it. The notes say there are no redundant unlocks, and weapon progression speeds up as you earn more shared attachments. Since the beta, the menus now show weapon unlocks instead of weapon levels, and the post-match screen shows more clearly how shared attachments let you skip progress.

For people who want the old-school grind, Weapon Prestige is back. If you Prestige a weapon, every attachment on that weapon, including shared ones, is locked again and the weapon switches to a classic level-based unlock system. Your shared attachments stay unlocked on other weapons you have not Prestiged.

My read: if you just want to play with good builds quickly, do not Prestige weapons early. If you love leveling a single gun, Weapon Prestige gives you a longer track.

Optic rail placement and reticles

A new Optic Rail Placement setting in Gunsmith lets you slide your optic to get the exact sight picture you like. It is cosmetic only, and you can preview it from the aim-down-sights view, so what you see in Gunsmith is what you get in game.

Reticle Customization is in too. Thermal optics get a nice bonus: equipping a custom reticle on a thermal also gives you a different thermal effect, so if you like a thermal scope but hate its look, you can change it.

Perks: Where Everything Landed

Perks were reshuffled after the beta to balance speed, durability, utility and stealth. Here is the launch layout from the notes:

  • Perk 1: Quick Fix, Overkill, High Alert, Ghost, Resupply, Kill Chain
  • Perk 2: Hardline, Blood Rush, Bomb Squad, Fast Hands, Ninja, Birdseye
  • Perk 3: Lethal Reach, Combat Grid, Battle Hardened, Scavenger, Tracker, Cold-Blooded
Three perks got buffs from beta feedback:
  • Battle Hardened now does a better job of negating most effects from Tactical grenades like the Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mine.
  • Resupply gives your first recharge faster.
  • Blood Rush now triggers Tactical Sprint automatically when you press sprint. You can change that in Movement Advanced Settings.

Movement and Tactical Sprint

Infinity Ward kept the beta change that makes Tactical Sprint not available by default. You get it through Blood Rush, which is now a Perk 2 option. Because you are spending a perk slot on it, the studio removed the extra sprint-out penalty Tac Sprint normally comes with.

The default input is now "single tap run," so with Blood Rush equipped you Tac Sprint for as long as your stamina lasts. If you want more control, "double tap" and "single tap sprint" options are still in the settings.

The notes also say movement transitions were tuned so every action has "a clear benefit at a clear cost," and several bugs were fixed where the first-person and third-person views did not match. Those bugs made enemies look like they moved in unrealistic ways and allowed some snaking. Infinity Ward says all the issues it found are fixed and it will keep watching.

My read: Blood Rush is going to be a very common pick, which means Perk 2 is where you give something up. Hardline (cheaper streaks), Ninja and Fast Hands are all in the same slot, so you will feel that choice.

A new Proving Grounds area builds on the beta's Mobility Course, mixing movement practice with combat drills and high-score challenges. It is a good place to learn the movement before your first ranked-style sweat session.

Spawns

Spawn work continued after the beta. The notes mention more iteration on player separation, squad spawning and Hardpoint spawn predictability, with spawns reoriented around consistent flow so you are "never far from the fight." There are no specific numbers, so we will have to see how it plays on the six maps nobody has touched yet.

Killstreaks: UAV Gets Tougher

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 17 killstreaks, and for the first time in a Modern Warfare game you can attach them to individual Multiplayer loadouts. That means one class can run a UAV setup while another runs heavier streaks.

The new Smart Streak system lets objective play, such as capturing a point in Domination, count toward your killstreak meter. The higher streak costs from beta Weekend 2 are staying, so a UAV costs 5 kills (or 4 with Hardline).

Two killstreak changes were made for launch:

  • UAV health is up from 100 to 150. Players said UAVs were too easy to shoot down after their health was lowered in the beta.
  • Wheelson pathing and targeting were reworked so it is more aggressive and does not get confused when targets change quickly.
The notes also fix a bug where your killstreak counter could reset after using the Argonaut.

Equipment

Create-a-Class includes 9 Tacticals, 11 Lethals and 12 Field Upgrades, from returning gear like the Flash Grenade, Stim, Frag Grenade and Trophy System to options like the Screamer Mine, Zip Gun, Smoke Wall and Seeker Drone. The one tuning change listed for launch: Flash and Concussion effective range and duration are slightly reduced. With Battle Hardened also getting stronger, flash spam should be less punishing.

Maps and Modes at Launch

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 20 Multiplayer maps:

  • Core 6v6 (12): Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm, Transit 213
  • Ground War 32v32 (3): Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium, Forest
  • Gunfight 2v2 (4): Cafe, Library, NYC, Smuggler
  • Kill Block: a new dynamic map that supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch, with 6v6 modes and new Slabs and configurations coming after launch
Returning modes include TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-For-All, Frontline, Search and Destroy, Gunfight and Gun Game, plus Hardcore. Four modes are new:
  • Inflation: eliminate enemies and collect their cash. Carry enough to become a High Value Target and you are revealed to both teams.
  • Hijack: fight over a Data Spike, then carry, throw or pass it to the enemy Comm Station, plant it and defend the upload.
  • Collateral: round-based tactical play that mixes Search and Destroy with a Buy Phase. You start each match with a pistol and $800 and earn cash through objectives and kills.
  • Combat Outpost: a Ground War mode where capturing Outposts scores points, adds spawns and unlocks stronger team rewards as you reinforce them.
Infected and a new Possession mode are coming next week as a Halloween event.

Progression, Prestige and Events

Modern Warfare 4 has two Prestige paths, a first for Call of Duty, and progression runs through Level 55 and beyond. All 10 Prestige icons reference Infinity Ward's history, and players who reach Prestige Master can pick from legacy Prestige icons from across the series.

The Weapon Camo grind is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, once Season 1 starts, Warzone. Special Camo Challenges adapt to the mode you are playing, and completing one in any mode unlocks that camo everywhere.

One change worth knowing if you like routine grinding: Weekly Challenges will not be available in Season 1. Infinity Ward says it wants events to feel more worth your time instead. Events will reward Apex Attachments, Weapon Camos, Calling Cards and Operator Skins, some events will repeat so you get a second shot at a missed top reward, and the first event starts on launch day.

DMZ Fixes From Early Access

DMZ has been in early access since October 20, and the notes list two rounds of fixes. Highlights from October 20:

  • Crash and stability fixes, including a crash when breaching the door in Breaking New Ground.
  • After-Action Report showing 0 XP after your first match is fixed.
  • The ISO Apex Attachment now works as intended in DMZ.
  • Only the player who landed the final blow on a Commander got XP and progress toward the King Slayer Calling Card. Now the whole squad gets it.
  • The Impact Smokes Pro Trait now activates when you are downed.
  • Fixes for getting stuck in rocks in Hajin, a 3D Printer bug that kicked you from the FOB, and a soft lock when selling starting gear before your first deployment.
  • Two Nintendo Switch 2 fixes for a missing prompt in the Chemical Denial op at NuriGO Mall and for buying saved Blueprint modifications.
From October 21:
  • An error when opening the Dog Tag Case is fixed.
  • The Toxic Intercept op no longer fails after you finish the Defend the Bomb objective.
  • A PC performance issue when holding a Heartbeat Sensor with a weapon equipped is fixed.
  • AI enemies running over players during infil in NK Wilderness is fixed.

Known Issues to Watch

Activision's Modern Warfare 4 known issues page, updated October 21, lists two open problems:

  • Xbox on PC: some players do not see a button to launch Campaign or DMZ from COD Home. Activision suggests making sure Content Pack 1 is installed and checking that you have not hit the 10 device limit in Microsoft Store device management.
  • DMZ Operator Prestige: some players cannot Prestige an active Operator after meeting the requirements. The current workaround is equipping Rare weapons with only three attachment slots (weapons that have never had four or more attachments).
Infinity Ward also tracks live issues on its official Trello board and posts updates on the @CODUpdates account.

My Launch Night Checklist

These are my suggestions, not Infinity Ward's:

  • Check your installed content packs today so the launch-night download is small.
  • Decide on Blood Rush early. If you like fast movement, build your first classes around it and plan the other Perk 2 slot choices accordingly.
  • Do not Prestige a weapon right away. Let shared attachments speed up your arsenal first.
  • Try Collateral. It is the most different new mode and should be worth learning before the meta settles.
  • Spend ten minutes in Proving Grounds to get used to the movement on a new controller layout.
  • Shoot down UAVs with a plan. With 150 health, a quick spray will not always do it, so a launcher class may be worth having.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Modern Warfare 4 come out?

Modern Warfare 4 releases on Friday, October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision said the game unlocks at midnight local time, so many US players can start late Thursday night.

Did Infinity Ward change the TTK for launch?

Infinity Ward is keeping the time-to-kill from beta Weekend 2, which it says was strongly preferred by players of all skill levels. On top of that, every weapon got a balance pass, SMGs are stronger at close to mid range, and one-hit-kill weapons have more flinch and damage tuning.

Is Tactical Sprint on by default in Modern Warfare 4?

No. Tactical Sprint comes from the Blood Rush perk, which is now in the Perk 2 slot. With Blood Rush equipped, pressing sprint triggers Tac Sprint by default, and the usual sprint-out penalty has been removed.

How many kills does a UAV cost in MW4?

A UAV costs 5 kills, or 4 with the Hardline perk. Its health went up from 100 to 150 for launch, so it is harder to shoot down than it was in the beta.

How many maps and weapons does Modern Warfare 4 launch with?

The game launches with 20 Multiplayer maps (12 core 6v6, 3 Ground War, 4 Gunfight and Kill Block), 33 weapons and 33 Operators. Infected and the new Possession mode are coming the week after launch.

What are the new modes in Modern Warfare 4?

The new modes are Inflation, Hijack, Collateral and Combat Outpost. Collateral is a round-based mode that combines Search and Destroy with a Buy Phase, starting each match with a pistol and $800.

Does Modern Warfare 4 have Weekly Challenges?

Not in Season 1. Infinity Ward says it is focusing on events instead, with rewards like Apex Attachments, camos and Operator Skins, and some events will repeat so you can get a missed reward later.

What is Weapon Prestige?

Weapon Prestige is an optional system that resets a weapon to a classic level-based unlock path. Its attachments, including shared ones, become locked on that weapon, but shared attachments stay unlocked on your other weapons.

Why can't I launch Campaign or DMZ on Xbox on PC?

Activision lists this as a known issue. It recommends making sure Content Pack 1 is installed and checking that you have not reached the 10 device limit in Microsoft Store device management.

Is the weapon camo grind shared between modes?

Yes. The Weapon Camo grind is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone once Season 1 begins, and Special Camo Challenges adapt to the mode you are playing.
