Hearthstone Patch 36.6 Guide: Black Market, Aberrations & Reign Countdown (Sept 2026)

Patch 36.6 is the soft open for Reign of the Black Empire. It is not the expansion itself. It is the event runway: a limited Black Market, a free login Legendary, pre-purchase bundles, early-play War of Old & New cards, a Ranked Legendary Quest Chain, and a same-week Battlegrounds invasion of Aberrations that goes live with 36.6.1 on September 22.

What Patch 36.6 actually ships

Blizzard's patch notes frame 36.6 as the countdown to Reign. Practical checklist:

• Reign of the Black Empire launches October 20 with 135 new collectible cards
• Pre-purchase bundles are available now (standard Pre-Purchase, Mega Bundle, and a Sequence Bundle path if you own both)
• Log in for a free M.O.T.H.E.R. Legendary (one per account)
• Black Market runs September 15 – October 13 with Ranked Bloodstones
• War of Old & New event runs October 6 – 20 with early-playable Reign cards
• Legendary Quest Chain runs September 29 – October 20 for Reign packs via Ranked
• Battlegrounds 36.6.1 on September 22 adds Aberrations, rotates Naga out for now, and guarantees the new type in every lobby for the first two weeks

That is the whole calendar. Everything below is how to not waste Bloodstones, how Deity combat works, and which dates are earn windows versus spend windows.

Black Market: Bloodstones, stock, and the Oct 6 cut

The Black Market is a temporary bazaar with haggling vendors and a currency that does not carry over between Black Market events. Blizzard is blunt about that: spend what you earn before the booth closes on October 13.

How Bloodstones work

• Earn Bloodstones by playing Ranked Hearthstone during the Black Market window
• Spend them on packs and cosmetics listed in the market
• Prices can change; Blizzard literally says today's bargain can be tomorrow's luxury
• From October 6 – 13, you cannot earn more Bloodstones, but you can still spend and haggle if you are a few short
• After the event ends, leftover Bloodstones disappear with that market cycle

Treat October 6 as a soft deadline for grinding. Treat October 13 as the hard spend deadline.

What you can buy

Blizzard lists these Black Market offerings for the current event:

• 1x Reign of the Black Empire Pack (stock: 4)
• Taelan Fordring Signature Legendary card
• Broxigar Hero Skin and Card Back for Demon Hunter
• Yogg-Ramen Hero Skin for Mage
• Champion Tyrande Hero Skin for Priest
• Fireside Card Back

If you already own an item, that slot becomes Golden Standard Packs of equivalent value. That matters for veterans who already own the skins: the market still has a sink, it just converts into packs.

Priority tip for most players: bank enough Bloodstones for the four Reign packs first, then cosmetics. Packs convert into expansion cards you will need on October 20. Cosmetics are forever cool and forever optional.

Free M.O.T.H.E.R. Legendary on login

Log in during Patch 36.6 and Blizzard grants M.O.T.H.E.R. for free.

Fine print from the patch notes:

• Limit one per account
• After Patch 37.6, M.O.T.H.E.R. is granted by owning a Reign of the Black Empire pack instead of by login

If you are taking a break until the expansion, you still have a path later through pack ownership. If you are active now, just log in once and move on.

Pre-purchase Reign of the Black Empire

Reign launches October 20. Pre-purchase is live now. Blizzard's bundle ladder:

• Pre-Purchase Bundle
• Pre-Purchase Mega Bundle (90 packs, Golden Legendary C'Thun, Eye of the Empire, cosmetics, Signature Legendary Drest'agath)
• Buy both Pre-Purchase and Mega to unlock the option for the Pre-Purchase Sequence Bundle with exclusive Diamond Isiset
• Own all three pre-purchase bundles and receive the Way of the Monk Coin, teasing Monk for 2027
• Acquiring both main pre-purchase bundles also grants a free Random Golden Legendary from Reign

Drest'agath is called out as an ancient Aberration that draws an Old God from your deck or grants a random one if none remain. That flavor lines up with the Battlegrounds Aberration theme, but Constructed players should still treat it as a Signature chase card, not a BG mechanic.

War of Old & New (Oct 6–20)

From October 6 – 20, complete event quests for rewards that include three Reign cards you can put in decks before launch:

• 2x Arrival of the Old Gods (regular and Golden)
• 2x Arrival of the Titans (regular and Golden)
• 2x Dark Terraforming (regular and Golden)
• 2x Tavern Tickets
• Zek'voz Hero Skin for Priest

This is the early-access ladder for Constructed lab decks. Calendar it with the Black Market's final spend week: October 6 is when Bloodstone earning ends and War of Old & New begins. You will be busy.

Legendary Quest Chain (Sept 29–Oct 20)

From September 29 – October 20, a Ranked Legendary Quest Chain pays:

• Step 1: 1x Reign of the Black Empire Pack
• Step 2: 1x Golden Reign of the Black Empire Pack

That is free pack progress for people who already ladder. Stack it with Black Market packs if you are deep into Ranked anyway.

Battlegrounds 36.6.1: Aberrations go live Sept 22

The Constructed countdown is only half the patch. Battlegrounds gets a full type launch with 36.6.1 on September 22, detailed in Blizzard's Aberrations Join Battlegrounds at BlizzCon article.

Deity rules (memorize these four lines)

• Each time a friendly Aberration dies, it advances your Deity's progress
• Two Deities exist: C'Thun and Y'Shaarj, but only one answers per game
• Which Deity answers is chosen at random at the start of each game
• After three Aberration sacrifices, your Deity joins that combat with a game-changing effect

C'Thun (Tier 3 Deity): after awakening, splits its stats among your other minions.

Y'Shaarj (Tier 3 Deity): Deathrattle that summons your first two Aberrations that died this combat at maximum stats (except Deities).

Strategy implication: you are building a death engine, not a pure board that never trades. Discard synergies, Tentacles, and Tavern spells that want to be discarded are part of the package, not side notes.

First two weeks: Aberrations in every lobby

Starting September 22, Aberrations appear in every lobby for the first two weeks. That is Blizzard forcing the tutorial period so the type is not a rare lottery. After that window, expect normal type rotation rules again.

Naga rotation

With Aberrations in, Naga temporarily rotate out. Naga-specific heroes and cards are unavailable while Naga are out of the pool. If your comfort hero is Naga-locked, park it for this cycle.

New heroes for the debut window

New heroes are guaranteed in every game for two weeks starting September 22:

• Drest'agath – Incubate (1 Cost): Discard a card to get a random Aberration
• Kith'ix – Dark Ritual (2 Cost): Get 2 random minions; when you play one, discard the other

Rat King now includes Aberrations in its Tale of Kings pool. Several heroes are banned from Aberration lobbies (or from Y'Shaarj specifically), including Morchie, Murozond Unbounded, Sylvanas Windrunner, and Y'Shaarj-only bans for The Curator, The Lich King, Teron Gorefiend, and N'Zoth. Check the lobby if your comfort pick disappears.

What the type wants you to do

Without pasting every minion line, the overview clusters Aberrations around:

• Discard to buff your Deity or board
• Deathrattles that advance the three-death clock
• Selling or playing into discard pairs
• Tavern spells like Sludge Corrosion, Corrupted Coin, and Energizing Chamber that cast twice or improve if discarded

If you hate discard juggling, this is still a learnable two-week forced curriculum. If you love high-variance engines, queue hard while Aberrations are guaranteed.

Arena note from the Constructed side of 36.6: appearance rates for Azeroth's Most Wanted Class Set cards are back to normal. That is a small Arena correction, not the headline.

Mr. Bigglesworth in Darkmoon Faire Treasures

From September 18 – October 13, Mr. Bigglesworth is in Darkmoon Faire Treasures as a Hearthstone Pet. First pull is free. He reacts to board state, can interact with the Lich Lord Kel'Thuzad Mythic Hero Skin (replacing the phylactery as Hero Power source for Mage and Death Knight), and levels through XP actions that include dealing hero damage, filling the board, playing cats/Undead/Shadow spells, and several Battlegrounds milestones.

This sits on the same calendar as the Black Market. Cosmetics players may split Runestones and Bloodstones attention; Ranked grinders should not let pet FOMO eat the October 6 Bloodstone earn cutoff.

How to spend the next four weeks

A clean plan that respects Blizzard's dates:

• Now – Oct 5: Log in for M.O.T.H.E.R., ladder Ranked for Bloodstones, start Aberration lobbies after Sept 22, finish Legendary Quest Chain steps when they unlock Sept 29
• Oct 6 – 13: Stop expecting new Bloodstones; spend and haggle; start War of Old & New quests for early Reign cards
• Oct 14 – 19: Finish War of Old & New; lock pre-purchase decisions if you still want Mega/Sequence cosmetics
• Oct 20: Reign launches; Assemble and Old Gods Constructed becomes the main story again
