Final Fantasy XIV's Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo opened with the keynote everyone was waiting for, and it came with good news and a small dose of bad news. The good news: Evercold finally has a launch date, the second new job is officially the Zephyr, and Naoki Yoshida walked through a long list of system changes that will reshape how gearing, alliance raids and weekly play work in the 8.x cycle. The bad news is that the date is later than promised. Evercold now launches on Tuesday, February 23, 2027, with early access starting Friday, February 19, instead of the January window Square Enix had been pointing to all year.
The keynote ran from 11:00 AM to roughly 1:25 PM Japan time on Saturday, which was Friday night, October 30, from about 9:00 PM to 11:25 PM CT for players in the US. If you slept through it, this is the full rundown, built from Square Enix's official press release, the Evercold site and the Day 1 keynote broadcast. Where the team has not given a number yet (launch hour, benchmark date, Fierce tuning), I leave it blank rather than guess.
Evercold Release Date: February 23, 2027
Square Enix's press release confirms Evercold "is set to release on Tuesday 23rd February, 2027." That is roughly three weeks past the late January target. Yoshida bowed on stage and apologized for the slip. In the English translation from Michael-Christopher Koji Fox, he said the team "put forth every effort to get this done at the end of January" and that the extra time is there "to make sure we can deliver on the many promises we've made."
Honestly, given how much of the game is changing in 8.0, I am not upset about it. Evolved Mode for every job, a new gear acquisition flow, Seasons, a new raid difficulty, the alliance raid split and a character creator overhaul are not small patches you can hotfix your way out of on launch week. A few extra weeks of polish for an expansion this systemic is the right call. If you were planning holiday time around a January launch, though, that plan needs a rethink.
Early Access and Pre-Order Times in CT
Pre-orders for Evercold and the Collector's Box open on Wednesday, November 4, 2026 at 9:00 AM GMT. US clocks fall back on November 1, so that is 3:00 AM CT on November 4.
Early access is "tentatively scheduled to begin on Friday 19th February, 2027 at 9:00 a.m. (GMT)," which is also 3:00 AM CT. Square Enix has not posted the exact hour for the February 23 full release yet.
Zephyr: The Second Evercold Job
Zephyr is the physical ranged DPS fans have been guessing about since the Berlin stop of the Fan Fest tour. Per the press release, it "joins the fray using a combination of crossbow shots and support from an avian familiar known as Nephele." The official Zephyr trailer shows the crossbow and the bird of prey working together.
Here is what Yoshida confirmed on stage:
- Role: physical ranged DPS, so it sits alongside Bard, Machinist and Dancer.
- Weapon: crossbow.
- Familiar: Nephele, a raptor-like bird that works "in tandem with its master to unleash powerful coordinated attacks as well as provide party support."
- Starting level: 90, the same as Bastion.
- Where it starts: the job quest begins in Gridania.
- Combat mode: Evolved Mode only. There is no Reborn Mode version of Zephyr.
- Lore: Zephyrs come from hunters in the northwestern mountains of Ilsabard who relied on these skills to survive.
- Movement: Yoshida described them as evasion experts with "a variety of breezy movement actions for precise positioning."
The trailer also gave us a better look at Visna, the pink-haired Miqo'te introduced in patch 7.56, fighting as a Zephyr. If you finished that MSQ, you have already had a short taste of what the job looks like.
What Zephyr Means for Your Prep
Because Zephyr and Bastion both start at 90, you will need a job at 90 or higher to start either one, and the jobs are only playable in Evolved Mode. If you have been leaving your phys ranged jobs to collect dust, now is a good time to look at what your roster looks like. Combine that with the Halone's Earring pre-order bonus (more on that below) and November through February is a comfortable window to get alt jobs to 100 so you go into the expansion with more options.
The Full Evercold Trailer: Lagertha, Baldr and the Realmships
The keynote opened with the full-length Evercold trailer. The setting is the Fourth, an icebound shard where, according to the keynote, people abandoned the frozen surface and took to the skies on giant realmships about 500 years ago. The people aboard those ships carry elemental brands from birth, and the brands make it dangerous to get close to someone with a different one. The Warrior of Light and friends do not carry a brand, which looks like the hook for why we matter on the Fourth.
New named characters from the trailer:
- Lagertha: first mate of Naglfar, the Realmship of Water. She closely resembles Ysayle, and Yoshida stressed that she is a new character, not Ysayle. The Japanese stream gave her a title along the lines of "the Cold-Blooded."
- Baldr: the red-haired Roegadyn who introduced the gunshield-wielding Bastion. His name was confirmed on stage.
- Returning faces: Alphinaud and Estinien appear as key characters, and a pair of Ascians carried over from Dawntrail are presented as central to the story.
New Areas: Sessrymnir, Skiðblaðnir and Hjartadunur
Evercold's main zones are five massive realmships. Berlin showed Naglfar (Water) and Hringhorni (Fire). Tokyo added two more:
- Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth: open fields on top and tunnel networks that drop into mines and crystal-lit caverns. The ship carries an earth aether crystal and appears heavy on farming and mining.
- Skiðblaðnir, the Realmship of Wind: wind-powered tech everywhere. This is where you will meet the Köttr, the small cat-like beastfolk who also tie into the MSQ, working in what looks like an airship yard.
- Hjartadunur: the second player town, the place with giant flowers and a huge pit in the middle that was teased in Anaheim.
Level Sync for the Open Zones
After the opening area, three zones can be done in any order. These zones and their three dungeons scale to your job level, including the gear that drops, so you do not need to worry about doing them in the "right" order. Yoshida also said the team plans to build new content on top of this scaling system.
Seasons, Adventurer Activity and No Season Pass
This is where most of the long-term changes live.
Adventurer Activity is a new screen where normal play earns points. Missions include clearing a single MSQ or side quest, running dungeons and trials, FATEs, Frontline, crafter and gatherer collectables, Ocean Fishing and GATEs. Standard missions repeat, so you can just play what you like. Weekly missions sit on top. Once you hit your weekly cap, you can go back and fill in what you missed from the previous week, one week back. That is a real improvement over the old "log in every day or fall behind" feeling.
Seasons are just the new name for a two-patch cycle, for example 8.0 plus 8.1 or 8.2 plus 8.3. Yoshida was very direct: there is no season pass, and Seasons do not add any extra fees. It is a naming convention tied to item level steps.
Build-Up Gear: Seasonal Gear and Raid Gear
Evercold reorganizes gear into two tracks that both upgrade through a Season, and both are claimed from a new menu you can open anywhere instead of tracking down an exchange NPC.
- Seasonal gear: unlocked by raising your activity level. You earn tokens for specific slots, the categories are shared across all your jobs, and you can upgrade it once per Season. In even patches, upgrade materials come from Fierce raids, one piece per week. In odd patches, the Fierce cap is lifted and normal trials also give one upgrade per week, which helps casual players catch up.
- Raid gear: from Savage, now with personal loot. Everyone gets a trade-in item per floor, and each floor maps to specific slots. When you claim a piece you choose its secondary stats yourself, but it comes without guaranteed materia slots. Raid gear can be upgraded twice per Season. The first upgrade uses more Savage tokens. The second, in the odd patch, combines items from the new 8-player Savage alliance content with crafted materials and opens sealed slots for overmelding at success rates Yoshida called "much higher" than crafted gear. Fully upgrading your weapon and set adds selectable visual effects to the weapon.
Raids: Fierce, Personal Loot and Split Alliance Raids
Square Enix's release confirms the new difficulty: "Fierce difficulty will fall between Normal and Savage." The keynote fills in the schedule for the first tier of the FFVII Remake crossover raid, Beyond the Lifestream, which has new key art from Tetsuya Nomura.
Yoshida explained why Fierce comes a week after Savage. It protects the world first race, and Fierce contains mechanics that hint at Savage, so it should not become a mandatory study session before raiders go in. Fierce also lets players see the fourth floor presentation that used to be Savage only. According to the Japanese recap, Fierce is designed to be easier than Extreme trials.
Alliance Raids Get Split in Two
Alliance raids are changing structure. Starting with the EVANGELION crossover, each alliance raid is split into a first half (bosses one and two) and a second half (bosses three and four), each with its own matchmaking and weekly reward. Your first clear goes in story order, then you can queue the halves separately. Roll-and-lose loot for alliance raids is going away, with details coming in a later broadcast. Older alliance raids are not being split in 8.0, but Yoshida called it something the team wants to look at later.
On top of that, there is a new 8-player Savage alliance format using signature bosses from the alliance raid. The difficulty target is around the third floor of a Savage tier with good gear. These drop the materials for the second raid gear upgrade, which gives odd patches a real high-end goal. The Ghosts of Desire trailer was styled like an EVANGELION next-episode preview.
Gauntlet of Power: A Boss Rush for Everyone
The most interesting new casual mode is Gauntlet of Power. It is a four-player boss rush where you fight up to five dungeon bosses in a row, pulled at random from a pool of over 200. After each boss the group votes whether to keep going. Players from level 51 to 110 can queue together and keep their own job level and actions, with scaling evening things out. To avoid spoilers, you only face bosses everyone in the party has already unlocked. New dungeon bosses are added automatically as patches release.
It launches with 8.0, and the unlock requirement is finishing the Stormblood MSQ. If you have done that already, it will be unlocked the day 8.0 drops. Rewards are still being tuned.
Character Creation, Action Skins and Benchmark Timing
The Evercold benchmark is currently planned for early December. Yoshida said it is finished, and a live broadcast covering character creator changes will come right before it releases. Confirmed character creator additions include color pickers for hair, skin and eyes, finer control over eyes and lips, eyeshadow and layered face paint. A "contact lens" system for eye color and race specific customization come in 8.1.
Character Action Skins are a new reward type that changes the animation of certain actions, from teleporting to combat skills, with more actions added patch by patch. New 8.0 job gear can also hide some parts, like Black Mage scarves, Gunbreaker spare cartridges or long Viper collars, and crafter and gatherer gear gets the same option.
Quality of Life: Mounts, Duty Support and Matchmaking
Some smaller items that will matter every day:
- Speed mounts: owning any of the SDS Fenrir, Garlond GL-IS or Hardy-Daytona raises the base speed of all your mounts by one step, so you are not stuck riding a bike for the speed bonus.
- Auto remount: in 8.0, if talking to an NPC or gathering knocks you off your mount, you hop back on automatically afterward (with exceptions like cutscenes that move you to another area).
- Quest guidance and auto move: coming during the 8.x series, not at launch.
- Duty Support: now works with partial groups. Two players plus two NPCs in a dungeon is fine, and supported trials can be filled with NPCs too.
- In-region matchmaking test: reaches North America and Europe on Tuesday, November 10, and China on December 1. The Japanese recap notes this lines up with patch 7.58 and a 24-hour maintenance in NA and EU.
- Chocobo companion overhaul: chocobos in dungeons and a reworked breeding system, in 8.1.
Housing and PvP
Housing finally gets interior size choice in 8.1. You will be able to pick small, medium or large interiors no matter which plot size you own, with the furniture cap following the interior size, for a Gil remodeling fee. The placement UI overhaul, including official midair placement, is planned from 8.2. More housing plots are being discussed. Yoshida said the budget is already approved, so "it's not a matter of if, but when."
PvP gets Bastion and Zephyr plus job tuning in 8.0, but the major update, including a new Hall of the Novice chapter for newcomers, is scheduled for 8.1.
Evercold Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses
Pre-orders go live on November 4. Bonuses are delivered automatically on Mog Station, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Nintendo eShop. Retailer purchases come with a code you can redeem straight away.
The bonus I would actually plan around is Halone's Earring. Its stats scale to your class and level, and while you wear it you get 30% more EXP from defeating enemies. Square Enix says the items are delivered immediately on pre-order, so the earring is usable through level 100 right away. That gives you a little more than three months of boosted leveling before February 19.
One thing to read carefully: the physical Collector's Box does not include the game or any in-game items. Console and Steam players buy the box and the Digital Collector's Edition separately. The Collector's Bundle that pairs both is a Square Enix Store exclusive, Windows or Mac only, in limited quantities.
35 Million Players and the Free Trial
Square Enix also announced that FFXIV has passed 35 million registered accounts. The free trial still covers A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers up to patch 5.58 with no playtime limit. If you have a friend who has been on the fence, a February launch gives them a long runway to get through the free content first.
What to Do Between Now and February
Here is my short list for the next 16 weeks:
- Decide on your pre-order on November 4 if you want the earring early. It goes live at 3:00 AM CT.
- Get at least one extra job to 90 or higher so Bastion and Zephyr are open on day one.
- Finish Stormblood's MSQ on any alts you plan to play Gauntlet of Power on.
- Watch for the benchmark in early December to build your new look in advance.
- Mark November 10 for the NA and EU matchmaking test and its long maintenance.
- Wait for the job live letter before you lock in a main. Evolved Mode changes everything, and role action, auto attack and melee range changes will be covered in a long battle broadcast before launch.
