Dota 2 finally has a new Arcana. Valve shadow-dropped the Trove of Terror on the evening of Tuesday, October 6 (Central time), and the headline item is Maw of the Megalodon, the first Arcana Tidehunter has ever had. GosuGamers, Dot Esports and KeenGamer all note it is the first brand-new Arcana in more than two years, and Dot Esports and KeenGamer date the previous new ones to the Vengeful Spirit and Skywrath Mage Arcanas from the Crownfall event in April 2024. The same treasure also brings back Drow Ranger's 2021 Arcana, adds fifteen Immortal sets, and hands out new Tormentor and Roshan looks if you open enough chests.
This guide covers what is in the Trove, how the escalating odds and the 50-chest guarantee actually work, what the milestones cost, what you can and cannot trade, and how to decide whether to open any at all. Valve's own announcement, Inside the Trove of Terror, is mostly flavor text. It confirms the Arcanas, the fifteen sets and the Tormentor and Roshan rewards, but it does not list prices, odds or set names. Those come from the in-game treasure disclosure as reported by Dot Esports, KeenGamer, Timesaver, GosuGamers, esports.gg and Offstage. When a detail comes from one of them and not from Valve, we say so.
When the Trove of Terror Released
Valve's "Inside the Trove of Terror" post went up on the Dota 2 Steam news feed at 00:22 UTC on October 7, 2026. That is 7:22 PM CT on October 6, or 5:22 PM PT. The treasure was in the in-game store right away. That is why some outlets list October 6 and others list October 7. Both are correct depending on where you live.
It is a cosmetic drop, not a gameplay patch. The live balance patch is still 7.41f, which Valve released on September 15. There were no gameplay notes with the treasure. If you came here hoping for 7.42, this is not it.
Valve has not announced an end date. KeenGamer noted that no end date was given at launch, and the Valve post does not mention one either. Treasures like this usually do not stay in the store forever, so if you plan to buy, do not assume you have until next year. We will update this guide if Valve posts a closing date.
Maw of the Megalodon: Tidehunter's First Arcana
Valve's description is the most concrete part of the announcement. The Arcana arrives "with a new model, a host of custom animations, effects, taunts, voice lines, and dragging a familiar-looking corpse that serves as one part security blanket and one part snack." That corpse is Kunkka. GosuGamers, esports.gg, Dot Esports and KeenGamer all identify the skeletal remains Tidehunter drags around as his old rival, taking the place of the usual dead fish.
Tidehunter is no longer a fish-man with a shark-ish head. The whole model becomes a bipedal megalodon that carries a massive anchor. esports.gg says it is reminiscent of his 2025 Mythical set, Insatiable Seas, which gave him a shark-like head, but the Arcana goes much further.
The three styles
Valve teased "all three of its shark-toothed designs" for players who "master this Arcana's secrets." Dot Esports and KeenGamer describe it the same way: the Arcana drops with one style, and you unlock the two extra styles by progressing it. Valve did not name the styles. GosuGamers reports them as:
- Maw of the Megalodon, the default blue-toned shark
- The Hammer of Maelrawn, a brown hammerhead style
- Unfathomable Hunger, the default shark with Tidehunter's familiar green stripes
Ability effects, taunts and extras
According to GosuGamers, every ability gets custom effects:
- Gush and Anchor Smash end with different kinds of flopping fish
- Kraken Shell wraps Tidehunter in a torrent of water
- Ravage summons a horde of sharks across its huge area
If you play offlane, this is the one you are chasing. Tidehunter has never had an Arcana, Ravage is one of the most watched ultimates in the game, and a horde of sharks on a five-man Ravage is going to look great in highlight clips.
Drow Ranger's Arcana Returns
The second Ultra Rare is a rerun with a twist. Valve calls it "a Drow Ranger Arcana long thought lost to the flow of time" and says she "can look as she once did or assume a grave-stalking new form."
Two names are involved, and coverage has mixed them up, so here is how they fit together:
- Dread Retribution is the original Drow Ranger Arcana. Dot Esports, KeenGamer and Timesaver all date it to December 2021 and the Aghanim's Labyrinth Battle Pass, and it has been unavailable since that pass ended. Hotspawn places it in the TI11 Battle Pass instead, which conflicts with the other three outlets.
- Sepulchral Stalker is the new Drow Ranger set in this treasure. The Ultra Rare reward bundles Sepulchral Stalker with the Dread Retribution Arcana. KeenGamer and Hotspawn say you get the Arcana as part of it if you do not already own it.
If you already own Dread Retribution
This is still unclear. Timesaver found an open report on Valve's public Dota 2 bug tracker from a 2021 owner who said opening Sepulchral Stalker granted the set but no second copy of the Arcana. Valve had not responded when Timesaver published, and Valve has not said what previous owners get instead. If you bought the 2021 Battle Pass to level 333, keep that in mind before you spend toward the Ultra Rare tier mainly for Drow.
Everything in the Trove of Terror
Valve's post says "our collection of new item sets numbered fifteen." All fifteen are Immortal sets across three tiers. The two Arcana rewards sit on top in their own Ultra Rare tier. Here is the full list, with tiers as reported by KeenGamer, GosuGamers and esports.gg:
Two spelling differences are going around. Dot Esports writes "Firestone Desecration" for Undying and "Curse of Wyrmbender" for Shadow Shaman. KeenGamer, GosuGamers, esports.gg and Timesaver all use Direstone Desecration and Curse of the Wyrmbender, which we use too. Check the in-client names if you are searching the store.
The Anti-Mage Persona
GosuGamers, esports.gg and KeenGamer all report that Anti-Mage's Daemon Hunter set comes with an Anti-Mage Persona, and esports.gg names it The Disciple's Path. Valve's announcement does not mention a Persona at all, so treat that as reported by those outlets rather than stated by Valve. If it holds, it is the most interesting regular-tier drop in the box, and since it is in the regular tier you will get it within your first dozen chests if Dot Esports' no-duplicate rule holds (more on that below).
How regular drops work
Each chest gives you one regular-tier set. esports.gg describes it as "at least one" regular item, plus a small chance of a bonus item from the Rare, Very Rare or Ultra Rare tiers on top. Dot Esports reports that you will not get duplicate items until you own all of the treasure's non-rare items.
Timesaver and KeenGamer both report that recycling six sets from the Trove of Terror returns one more treasure. That matters once you start getting duplicates past the regular-set collection.
Drop Rates and Bad Luck Protection
This is the part to read before spending. The treasure discloses escalating odds for its three bonus tiers. KeenGamer reported the first-open chances:
Two rules control everything:
- Odds go up every time you open a treasure and do not hit that tier.
- Odds reset after you get an item from that tier. If you hit an Ultra Rare on open 30, your Ultra Rare odds go back to the bottom.
How the Ultra Rare odds climb
Timesaver published a few points along the Ultra Rare curve from the disclosure:
The 50-open guarantee counts from your last Ultra Rare, not as a lifetime total, according to Timesaver. And read it carefully: it guarantees an Ultra Rare item, and there are two in that tier. Dot Esports also says the guarantee is for "the Tidehunter or Drow Ranger Arcana." Fifty opens does not promise you the Tidehunter specifically. Some coverage has implied it does. Hotspawn, for example, writes about a 100% chance at "the Tidehunter Arcana" on the 50th treasure. The disclosure, as KeenGamer, Timesaver and Dot Esports report it, only guarantees the tier.
Nobody has reported a guarantee for the Rare or Very Rare tiers. They escalate and reset the same way, but we have no reported cap for them.
What the curve means in practice (our math)
Valve's full per-open table was not published in any article we found, so we cannot give an exact expected number of chests. We can still put a firm ceiling on early luck using the reported points. The chance only goes up, so every open up to the 6th is at most 1 in 1,486, and every open up to the 20th is at most 1 in 105. Add those up and the chance of getting an Ultra Rare within your first 20 chests is at most about 14% (6/1,486 + 14/105). That is a ceiling, not an estimate, and the real number is lower.
In plain terms, most players should not expect an Arcana in the first couple of dozen chests. The odds get real in the 20s and 30s, and the guarantee catches everyone who is still empty at 50. Hotspawn says the chance is "around 50%" by 40 treasures. That is a third-party figure we could not check against the full table, so do not plan your budget around it.
Bonus Rewards: Obscene Eye Ball and R'shan the Eternal
Two rewards do not depend on odds at all. They unlock at fixed open counts, and Valve's post confirms both exist ("an all-seeing new Tormentor" and "an incomprehensible new design for Roshan").
- 12 opens: Obscene Eye Ball, a new Tormentor appearance. GosuGamers calls it a Mythical Tormentor skin.
- 40 opens: R'shan the Eternal, a new Roshan appearance, plus the matching Baby R'shan the Eternal courier. GosuGamers lists it as Legendary.
How Much the Trove of Terror Costs
Valve's announcement does not list a price, and the in-game store is the only Valve surface that shows one. Here is what outlets reported:
- Dot Esports: "roughly $5 per opening"
- esports.gg: "around $4.70" per chest
- Offstage and PlayGround.ru: 424 rubles per chest
What each goal costs (our estimate)
Using the reported $4.70 to $5 range, and treating these as worst-case numbers where luck is not on your side:
A few caveats:
- The 12-chest row assumes Dot Esports' no-duplicate rule works as reported. Twelve regular sets and twelve opens line up, so if it holds, twelve chests gets you every regular set plus the Tormentor.
- The two-Ultra-Rare row assumes your second guaranteed Ultra Rare is the Arcana you do not already have. Valve's disclosure as reported does not say whether Ultra Rare duplicates are possible, so we cannot promise that.
- Dot Esports reported "early community reports" of players spending about $210 to $250 chasing the rare rewards without early luck. That matches the 40-to-50 chest range above.
- Recycling six sets for one treasure lowers the real cost a little once you are past the regular collection.
Can You Trade or Sell Trove of Terror Items?
As of launch, no. Timesaver reports the treasure itself is flagged neither tradable nor marketable. KeenGamer says the items inside are not tradable or marketable either, and Dot Esports says the Arcana cannot be gifted or traded on the Steam Community Market. Hotspawn notes that none of the sets are giftable, which breaks the usual habit of people buying treasure items from friends or other players.
That means:
- There is no market price to check. You cannot buy the Tidehunter Arcana from someone who got lucky.
- Opening chests is the only way to get either Arcana. KeenGamer and Hotspawn both say so.
- Someone selling you a "Tidehunter Arcana gift" is lying, unless Valve changes the rules.
Should You Open the Trove of Terror?
This depends on what you want, so here is how we would think about it.
If you just want the Tidehunter Arcana
Be honest about the budget. The guarantee only covers the Ultra Rare tier, and it could hand you the Drow bundle first. If you only care about Tidehunter, your worst case is a second full run toward the guarantee after a Drow hit. Decide your limit before you start. Opening one chest at a time "just to see" is how a $60 plan turns into $250.
If you mostly want cosmetics for heroes you play
Twelve chests is the sweet spot if the no-duplicate rule holds. You get every regular set, including the reported Anti-Mage Persona, plus the Tormentor skin, and you still have a small, rising chance at the bonus tiers. If you play Tiny, Pudge, Marci, Terrorblade or Primal Beast, twelve chests covers your hero.
If you want Roshan
Forty chests for R'shan the Eternal and the Baby R'shan courier is a big number. By the time you get there, your Ultra Rare odds have climbed a lot, so if you are going to 40 anyway, think about whether you are willing to finish to 50 for the guarantee. Stopping at 40 without an Arcana means you have paid for most of the climb and left before the safety net kicks in.
If you owned Dread Retribution in 2021
Wait for clarity. Until Valve explains what previous owners receive, the Drow bundle could be worth less to you than to someone who missed the 2021 pass, and the Ultra Rare guarantee does not let you choose which Arcana you get.
Practical tips
- Set a hard number first. 12, 40 and 50 are the meaningful stopping points. Anything in between is a gamble with no milestone at the end.
- Track your opens. The 50-chest counter resets after an Ultra Rare, so know where you are.
- Recycle duplicates. Six sets back into one treasure is free value once you have the regular collection.
- Ignore gift and trade offers. The items are not giftable or marketable at launch.
- Check the in-client price. Outlet prices are approximate and regional.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did the Dota 2 Trove of Terror come out?
Valve posted "Inside the Trove of Terror" at 00:22 UTC on October 7, 2026, which is 7:22 PM CT on October 6. The treasure was in the in-game store at the same time. It is a cosmetic release only. The gameplay patch is still 7.41f.
How do you get the Tidehunter Arcana in Dota 2?
Maw of the Megalodon only drops from Trove of Terror chests as an Ultra Rare reward. It is not sold directly, does not drop anywhere else, and cannot be traded or bought on the Steam Community Market at launch.
What are the Trove of Terror drop rates?
On the first open, the reported odds are 1 in 2,000 for Rare, 1 in 20,000 for Very Rare and 1 in 100,000 for Ultra Rare. Odds go up with every chest you open without hitting that tier and reset after you get one. Timesaver reports the Ultra Rare chance at about 1 in 105 by the 20th open and about 1 in 17 by the 49th.
Is the Tidehunter Arcana guaranteed after 50 chests?
No. The 50th open since your last Ultra Rare guarantees an Ultra Rare item, but there are two of them: Tidehunter's Maw of the Megalodon and Drow Ranger's Sepulchral Stalker bundle with Dread Retribution. You could get Drow first.
How much does a Trove of Terror chest cost?
Valve's post lists no price. Dot Esports reports roughly $5 per chest, esports.gg about $4.70, and Offstage 424 rubles. Check the in-game store for your region's price.
What do you get for opening 12 and 40 Trove of Terror chests?
Twelve opens unlocks Obscene Eye Ball, a new Tormentor appearance. Forty opens unlocks R'shan the Eternal, a new Roshan appearance, plus the Baby R'shan the Eternal courier.
Is the Drow Ranger Arcana in the Trove of Terror new?
The Arcana itself, Dread Retribution, is from December 2021. What is new is the Sepulchral Stalker set that comes bundled with it, which gives Drow the grave-stalking form Valve mentioned. Players who did not own Dread Retribution get the Arcana with the bundle.
Does the Anti-Mage set come with a Persona?
GosuGamers, esports.gg and KeenGamer report that the Daemon Hunter set includes an Anti-Mage Persona, and esports.gg names it The Disciple's Path. Valve's announcement does not mention it, so confirm in the client.
Can you trade Trove of Terror items?
Not at launch. Outlets report the treasure and its items as not tradable, not marketable and not giftable. Some players have filed bug reports disputing that, but Valve has not said it will change.
How long is the Trove of Terror available?
Valve has not announced an end date. Do not assume it will be around forever. We will update this guide if a closing date is posted.
Final Take
The Trove of Terror is the best-looking treasure Dota 2 has had in a long time, and Tidehunter finally getting an Arcana is a big deal for anyone who lives in the offlane. The sharks on Ravage and Kunkka's corpse on a rope are exactly the kind of personality that makes an Arcana worth having.
It is also an expensive box with a long, steep curve, a guarantee that does not let you choose your Arcana, and no trading to bail you out. Pick a number that makes sense for you (12, 40 or 50), stick to it, and recycle your duplicates. If luck shows up early, enjoy it. If it does not, the guarantee is there, but only if you can afford to reach it.
