QUICK ANSWER · DEADLOCK HALLOWEEN 2026 + GAMEPLAY UPDATE
• Released: Friday, October 30, 2026, posted on Steam at about 3:50 PM CT
• Event ends: Valve says the Halloween festivities run through November 2, 2026. No end hour was given
• Event content: Halloween Cauldrons around NYC. Break one with a Heavy Melee for Candy, eat it later for the temporary Sugar Rush buff. Hideout decorations and hero masks
• Biggest change: Mid-Boss has 20% more HP, half the bounty, and drops the Rejuvenator as 3 breakable crystals instead of 1
• Comeback: Haunts buffed 10%, comeback gold raised from 26% to 30%, Haunted Souls secure faster for the team that is behind
• Ranked: The latest 6 heroes lose their new status, so they now follow normal unlock rules for ranked and can be banned
• Big nerfs: Solomon, Rat King, Violet, Nurse Harrow, Mo and Krill, Radiant Regeneration, Spirit Sap, Divine Barrier
• Big buffs: Lifesteal items across the board, Warden, Kelvin's Frozen Shelter upgrades, Bullet Resilience, Battle Vest

Valve dropped the Halloween 2026 + Gameplay Update for Deadlock on Friday, October 30, and it is two very different patches stapled together. The first half is a short seasonal event: pumpkins, masks on the heroes, a spooky Hideout and a new candy system that runs only until November 2. The second half is a full gameplay patch that rebuilds the Mid-Boss fight, pumps up comeback mechanics, reworks a pile of items and takes the first real balance pass at the six heroes that arrived with City Never Sleeps.

If you only have a few days to enjoy the candy, this guide starts there. After that it goes through the gameplay changes that will still matter long after the decorations come down, with before and after numbers pulled straight from Valve's official Steam patch notes. A few things Valve did not write down, like the troll statue trick, come from the community testing compiled on the Deadlock Wiki update page, and we flag those clearly.

When Does the Deadlock Halloween Event End?

Valve's wording is that "the Halloween festivities are available in-game now through November 2nd, 2026." That is the only end date in the notes. Valve did not give an hour, so do not count on Monday evening. If you want the candy and the troll statue, play today or early Monday to be safe.

The event is mostly cosmetic and fun rather than a grind. There is no event pass, no currency to farm and nothing in the notes about permanent rewards. What you get is:

  • A decorated Hideout with a spooky new look
  • Masks on the heroes for the season
  • Pumpkins around NYC
  • Halloween Cauldrons that hand out Candy during matches
So the event is something you enjoy while it lasts, not something you need to complete. Nothing in Valve's post suggests you lose anything by missing it, which is a nice change from the usual seasonal FOMO in live service games.

Halloween Cauldrons and the Sugar Rush Buff

This is the new piece for 2026. As you walk the streets of Manhattan during a match you will find bubbling cauldrons with candy on display. The loop Valve describes is simple:

  • Break the cauldron with a Heavy Melee.
  • Pick up the Candy and it goes into your pocket for later.
  • Consume it when you want to get the temporary Sugar Rush buff, which Valve describes as "a boost of energy."
Valve did not publish numbers for Sugar Rush, so treat any exact values you see floating around as datamined or tested, not official. In practice the important part is that you choose when to eat it. That makes candy closer to a pocket powerup than a pickup that fires on contact. Grab it while you rotate between lanes, then save it for a fight you know is coming, like a Mid-Boss contest or a push on a Walker.

The Troll Statue Trick or Treat

There is a second candy use that Valve did not mention at all. According to the Deadlock Wiki's undocumented changes section, the troll statue under the large tree in the middle of Green Lane can be fed candy with a Heavy Melee, one candy per hit, as a literal trick or treat. The wiki lists:

  • A 70% chance to receive 1 to 3 random Permanent Buffs, or rarely a temporary Powerup
  • A 30% chance to be tricked and get nothing
  • A stun if you hit the troll without any candy
Those numbers come from community testing, not Valve, so they could be slightly off or change in a hotfix. Still, if the odds are anywhere near that, feeding the troll is a strong use of candy in the early game, because permanent buffs keep paying off for the rest of the match while Sugar Rush is gone in seconds. Just do not walk up to it empty handed in the middle of a rotation.

The wiki also notes an updated skybox and map lighting, plus a small Easter egg: Rabies Ronnie has been added to Rem's secret room in the Hideout.

The Mid-Boss Rework

The decorations go away on November 2. The Mid-Boss changes do not, and they are the most important part of this patch for anyone who plays ranked. Here are the numbers:

Mid-Boss statBeforeAfter
HealthBaseline+20%
Health gained per minuteBaseline+20%
Resistance reduction effectivenessFull50% as effective
Roar threshold50% HP25% HP
Bounty3000 (+50/min)1500 (+25/min)
Rejuvenator drop1 crystal in the center3 crystals spread around the pit, random positions
Crystal breakFull heal only on the first hit1 Heavy Melee per crystal, each grants 1 Rejuvenator and a full heal
Crystal bountyNone500 (+9/min) to the player who breaks it
Crystal drop time6s7.5s

What Valve Is Trying to Fix

Put those lines together and the direction is obvious. The Mid-Boss is now tankier, it regenerates faster, resistance shred is only half as effective against it, and its roar comes at 25% HP instead of 50%. All of that makes a quick, sneaky Mid-Boss take much harder. At the same time, the raw bounty is cut in half, from 3000 (+50/min) to 1500 (+25/min).

The real prize was always the Rejuvenator, and that is where the bigger design change sits. Instead of one crystal in the center of the pit, the Rejuvenator now drops as three crystals spread evenly around the pit at random positions. Each crystal breaks with one Heavy Melee and gives the team one Rejuvenator, so the total per kill is still three. The difference is that the full heal now applies to each crystal break, and each crystal pays out a 500 (+9/min) bounty to whoever breaks it.

How to Play the New Mid-Boss

The old pattern was simple: whoever got the last hit and then the single crystal won the whole package. Now there are three separate objects to claim, scattered around the pit, and they appear after a slightly longer 7.5 second drop time instead of 6. That opens up real counterplay. A team that loses the boss can still steal one or two crystals if it is positioned around the pit edges.

A few practical takeaways:

  • Assign crystal duty before the boss dies. Three crystals at random spots means one person standing in the middle is no longer enough. Spread around the pit.
  • Heavy Melee is the key button. Each crystal needs exactly one Heavy Melee. Heroes with fast or long reaching heavies have an advantage here, which is likely why Baba's Granny Long Legs stomp now only hits the closest Rejuvenator in range.
  • Do not chase the boss bounty. At 1500 souls the boss itself is worth much less than before. The crystals, their heals and their personal bounties are the point.
  • The bigger pit changes fights. Valve says the terrain around the Mid-Boss is a little bigger and has more cover, so expect more poke and flank angles instead of everyone stacking in one tight space.
Combined with the extra boss health, this should slow down the snowball that used to happen when an ahead team took a fast Mid-Boss and immediately pushed. Whether it actually works that way will become clear over the next week of ranked, but on paper it is a clear swing toward contested, messy fights.

Haunts, Haunted Souls and Comeback Mechanics

The second big system change is a buff to the tools a losing team uses to get back into the game. From the notes:

  • Haunts base bounty and growth up 10%, and their HP and damage output also up 10%
  • Haunted Souls secure 25% slower at baseline
  • But Haunted Souls now secure up to 50% faster than baseline depending on how far behind you are in Net Worth compared to the enemy team's average, with the maximum rate at a 20% Net Worth gap
  • Comeback gold from non-hero sources raised from a max of 26% to 30%, when behind by about 20% Net Worth
  • The bonus NPC souls multiplier when behind now also increases tick souls for the two poorest players
The Past Dues haunts also got a new behavior. They now channel their special attack, creating a build-up aura on the ground that slowly applies sleep to heroes standing inside it. Killing the channeling creature destroys the aura, so the counter is to focus it down rather than tank through.

What This Means in a Real Match

The secure rate change is the clever part. Haunted Souls are slower for everyone by default, then sped back up only for the team that is losing. If you are ahead, you have to commit longer to secure them, which gives the losing team a window to contest. If you are behind by around 20% Net Worth, you secure them much faster than the old baseline.

The tick souls change also targets a specific problem. In Deadlock it is very common for one or two players on a losing team to fall far behind because they keep dying or got stuck in a bad lane. Letting the bonus multiplier push their passive income up gives those players a way to catch up without needing to win fights first.

None of this means a stomp turns into a coin flip. A 20% gap is still a big gap. It does mean the middle of the game should have more back and forth, especially combined with the slower Mid-Boss.

Map, Movement and Neutral Changes

The smaller general changes are easy to skim past, but a few will be felt in every match:

  • Breakables growth values reduced by 10%, so boxes are worth a little less as the game goes on
  • Healing Snacks now heal 14% Max HP, up from 10%
  • Steam Vents now increase stamina regeneration by 150%
  • Tunnel move speed reduced from +70% to +50%
  • Move slow to air drag ratio increased from 0.35 to 0.5
  • Fixed some boxes taking longer to respawn when another pickup was left on the ground
  • Fixed some bugs with Walker stomp logic
The tunnel nerf is the one rotations will notice. Tunnels are still fast, just not as fast, so a hero relying on tunnels to get to a fight across the map will arrive a touch later. The air drag change means slows now cut your airborne movement more relative to before, which makes being slowed while jumping or dashing more punishing.

Ranked: The New Heroes Lose Their Training Wheels

One line in the general section matters a lot for ranked players: "Latest 6 heroes are no longer categorized as 'new' anymore." Valve says this means they now have normal hero unlocking requirements for ranked and can now be banned. The Deadlock Wiki also notes, as an undocumented change, that Priority tokens are no longer available.

The six newest heroes are the City Never Sleeps wave: Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet and Nurse Harrow, which released over October with Nurse Harrow arriving last on October 20. We covered that rollout and the 300K player record in our earlier Deadlock breakdown. Being bannable matters because almost all six got hit in this patch, and the ones that still feel oppressive after the nerfs can now simply be removed from the draft.

Here is how the six fared:

HeroHeadline changeRead
SolomonBase bullet damage 30 to 25, -20% headshot damage, Rook Battery scaling 1.3 to 0.9, Develop Queen cooldown 210s to 240sBig nerf to gun and Rook, ult hits harder

Nurse HarrowBase gun damage -10%, Healing Needles 25 to 22, Lurking Terrors fear builds in 2s instead of 1.3s, T3 now 50% damage reduction instead of immunityClear nerf
BabaThreadsap duration 22s to 16s, slower brew cycle, silence 3s to 2.75s, no initial brew timeMostly nerf
Deadman DannyJetpack blocked while cursed, slows and pulls work better against himCounterplay buff for everyone else

Solomon Takes the Biggest Hit

Solomon's gun damage drops from 30 to 25 base bullet damage and his gun now deals 20% less headshot damage. Rook Battery's damage scaling falls from 1.3 to 0.9, and its T3 cooldown reduction drops from -12s to -10s. In exchange, Setup Bishop gets more spirit scaling on squares (0.64 to 0.85), a bigger T1 slow (+15% to +25%) and a stronger T3 Spirit Resist shred, now -5% per stack applied on impact. Develop Queen's cooldown rises from 210s to 240s, but its damage scaling goes from 1.4 to 1.6 and the base ability now checkmates heroes under 100 Health, scaling +5 per boon, with T2 adding 150 to the threshold.

Valve also gave Move Piece a longer grab range (50m to 65m) and better placement, so pieces no longer fall through geometry or end up under the map. The short version: less free gun damage and Rook poke, more reward for landing the ultimate.

Nurse Harrow and Violet

Nurse Harrow was the last hero out and she gets a straightforward nerf: 10% less base gun damage, Healing Needles down from 25 to 22 heal per shot (T2 from +20 to +16, with spirit scaling raised from 0.2 to 0.24), and Lurking Terrors now needs 2 seconds of fear buildup instead of 1.3. Enemies also stop building fear if she is more than 50 degrees above or below their view, and her T3 changes from full damage immunity while channeling to 50% reduced damage. Wretched Vapors T3 gets a small buff to +20% Rush Speed.

Violet's Still Life stun drops from 1.0s to 0.9s and now requires line of sight when the channel ends. Abstract Landscape's cooldown rises from 165s to 180s and it now ends early if Violet dies. Her Sketches were also reworked: they now grant +2% healing amp for heal-focused heroes like Nurse Harrow and Kelvin, and give Spirit Power instead of Weapon Damage to Grey Talon, Infernus and Mina. Valve also notes "some moderate performance improvements" for Violet with more still to come.

Item Changes: Sustain Is Back

If one theme runs through the item list, it is lifesteal. Nearly every lifesteal item got a little stronger, while anti-heal also went up to keep it in check. Here are the most important lines:

Bullet LifestealWeapon Damage 6% to 10%, Lifesteal 13% to 15%Buff

Who Benefits

Bullet builds come out of this patch well. Bullet Lifesteal now gives 10% Weapon Damage on top of more lifesteal, Battle Vest goes from 18% to 22% Weapon Damage, Glass Cannon from 80% to 85%, Armor Piercer's chance from 55% to 60% and Bullet Resilience from 30% to 35% Bullet Resistance with more out of combat regen. Spirit players get Spirit Lifesteal and Infuser buffs plus a Lightning Scroll that now scales with Spirit Power.

On the other side, the counter items got sharper. Toxic Bullets and Crippling Headshot both move to 40% anti-heal, Decay goes to -55%, and Healbane can now stack from multiple sources with diminishing returns. So if the enemy team is building lifesteal, at least one anti-heal item is more valuable than it was a week ago.

The Notable Nerfs

Radiant Regeneration gets cut hard. Its regen on spirit damage scaling drops from 0.35 to 0.25, and the heal on ability cast drops from 65 to 40, scales less with boons, and now only triggers while you are in combat, the same rule as Spellslinger. That last part ends the trick of spamming abilities out of combat to top off.

Divine Barrier goes from a 45s to a 55s cooldown, Spirit Sap goes from 18s to 22s with a shorter 35m cast range, and High-Velocity Rounds loses a chunk of its base bullet velocity, from 60% to 45%, though its upgrades are unaffected. Metal Skin now increases your gravity by 20% while active, which makes it worse as an escape in the air.

Shadow Weave Rework

Shadow Weave is the one real rework. It loses its ambush Fire Rate and Melee Damage and instead gives +50% Ambush Weapon Damage. The bonus now builds up over 6 seconds of stealth before it reaches full power, with the invisibility UI pulsing when it is charged. In return, abilities used to break stealth now benefit from the ambush bonus on their own damage instead of the bonus applying after the ability already went off. Patient stealth openers get stronger, panic stealth for a quick melee gets weaker.

Other Hero Changes Worth Knowing

The patch touches 34 heroes in total, so we will not list every line here. The full set is in Valve's notes. These are the changes most likely to shift how you play or what you pick:

  • Mirage: Traveler gets a major rework. Channel time goes from 2s to 3s, it is interrupted by stuns, immobilizes, sleep or Slowing Hex, but the base ability now grants a barrier. The minimap moves to the center of the screen and enlarges while targeting, allies can see where you are aiming, and your destination stays marked on everyone's minimap. T2 becomes a -65s cooldown and T3 makes it uninterruptible by damage.
  • Mo and Krill: spirit per boon drops from 1.1 to 0.6 and all ability spirit damage falls 10%, while bullet damage per boon rises 4%. A push away from pure spirit builds.
  • Graves: move speed 7 to 6.7, bullet damage per boon down 4%, and Grasping Hands is easier to jump over with a slower deploy.
  • Warden: Alchemical Flask travels 40% faster with a stronger weapon damage reduction (-25% to -30%), Willpower speed goes to +20%, and Last Stand T2 gets more damage and a bigger cooldown cut.
  • Kelvin: Frozen Shelter's base cooldown goes up slightly to 190s, but T1 now cuts 30s, T2 also reduces enemy fire rate by 20%, and T3 regen climbs to +75.
  • Apollo: Pommel Hit becomes an immobilize and parry disable instead of a stun, lasting 1.5s instead of 0.8s, and Itani Lo Sahn is no longer interrupted by sleep.
  • Yamato: Flying Slash range shrinks from 26m to 23m, its T3 range bonus drops from +15m to +8m, and Shadow Transformation moves to a 160s cooldown.
  • Abrams and Drifter: both get small base gun damage buffs, 5% and 3%.
Smaller hero buffs land on Billy, Calico, The Doorman, Infernus, Lady Geist, Lash, McGinnis, Paradox, Seven, Silver, Victor and Viscous. Celeste, Venator, Wraith, Paige and Shiv see trims to specific abilities.

Street Brawl Changes

Street Brawl gets its own short section, and every line is a nerf aimed at the City Never Sleeps heroes and Paige:

  • Deadman Danny: Chimera Mk1 cooldown reduction per boon drops from -0.4s to -0.25s, and the T3 cooldown refund on hit drops from 50% to 30%
  • Nurse Harrow: ground leeches are removed on round reset, Lurking Terrors lasts 5s instead of 7s, and its T3 goes from +3s to +2s
  • Paige: Bookwyrm T2 trail duration from +2s to +1s
  • Rat King: smaller Scrap Grenade radii and a smaller, shorter Rule, Ratannia
  • Violet: Abstract Landscape lasts 5s instead of 6s, with T3 trimmed from +4s to +3s
If you have been farming Street Brawl wins on Danny or Nurse, expect that to get harder.

Should You Jump Back In This Weekend?

If you have been off Deadlock since the City Never Sleeps hype peaked, this is a reasonable weekend to return. The Halloween candy gives casual matches something silly to fight over until November 2, and the gameplay half of the update fixes some of the things that made October matches feel decided early. The Mid-Boss is harder to steal, the Rejuvenator is no longer a single winner-take-all object, and the losing team has better tools to stay in the game.

Ranked players should expect a short adjustment period. Six heroes became bannable at once, most of them got nerfed, and lifesteal got stronger across the board. The first few days after a patch like this are usually when the tier lists are least reliable, so play what you know and buy anti-heal when the enemy team is healing a lot.

Nothing in this patch changes how you get into Deadlock. When we covered the player record in October, Valve still described the game as early development and access still ran through invites from friends who already play, and these notes say nothing new about that.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Deadlock Halloween 2026 event end?

Valve's patch notes say the Halloween festivities are available through November 2, 2026. Valve did not give an exact end time, so the safest plan is to play on Sunday or early Monday. The gameplay changes from the same patch are permanent and are not tied to the event.

How do Halloween Cauldrons work in Deadlock?

During a match you will find cauldrons on the streets of NYC. Hit one with a Heavy Melee to break it and pick up a piece of Candy, which goes into your pocket. You can eat the candy whenever you want to get the temporary Sugar Rush buff. Valve has not published the exact stats of Sugar Rush, so the best approach is to save it for a fight you can see coming.

What does feeding the troll statue do?

This is not in Valve's notes. According to the Deadlock Wiki, the troll statue under the large tree in the middle of Green Lane accepts candy through a Heavy Melee. Players who tested it report a 70% chance of 1 to 3 random Permanent Buffs or a rare temporary Powerup, and a 30% chance of getting nothing. Hitting it without candy stuns you. Since these values come from community testing, they could change.

What changed about the Mid-Boss in Deadlock?

The Mid-Boss now has 20% more health and regeneration, takes only half the effect from resistance reductions, roars at 25% HP instead of 50%, and gives half the bounty it used to. Its Rejuvenator now drops as three crystals spread around the pit instead of one in the center. Each crystal needs one Heavy Melee, gives the team one Rejuvenator and a full heal, and pays 500 souls plus growth to whoever breaks it.

Can you ban the new heroes in Deadlock ranked now?

Yes. Valve says the latest six heroes are no longer categorized as new, which means they have normal hero unlocking requirements for ranked and can be banned. Those are the City Never Sleeps heroes: Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet and Nurse Harrow. The Deadlock Wiki also notes that Priority tokens are no longer available.

Which items got buffed in the Deadlock Halloween update?

Most lifesteal items got stronger, including Bullet Lifesteal, Spirit Lifesteal, Infuser, Vampiric Burst, Leech and Fury Trance. Battle Vest, Glass Cannon, Armor Piercer, Bullet Resilience, Silence Wave, Echo Shard and Focus Lens also got buffs. Anti-heal items like Toxic Bullets, Crippling Headshot and Decay were buffed to keep the extra sustain in check.

Was Solomon nerfed in Deadlock?

Yes, heavily. His base bullet damage drops from 30 to 25, his gun deals 20% less headshot damage, and Rook Battery's damage scaling falls from 1.3 to 0.9. Develop Queen has a longer 240 second cooldown but more damage scaling and a new checkmate effect on low health heroes. Setup Bishop got some buffs too, so his kit shifts toward abilities and away from gun poke.

Is Deadlock free to play and how do you get in?

Deadlock has no price and no public store purchase. As of our October coverage it was still in early development with access through invites, so a friend who already has the game needs to invite you, and this update does not mention any change to that. Once you are in, the Halloween event and all the gameplay changes are available to everyone at no extra cost.
