Blizzard's first WoW Forever class deep dive covered the two nature classes: the Hunter and the Druid. Both keep their original 1.12 foundation, but almost every specialization picks up a new gold medal talent, several old talents move into the baseline kit, and a handful of long-standing annoyances (traps you could not drop in combat, Druids who had to leave form to drink a potion) are gone.
This guide walks through what actually changed for each class, what Blizzard says it wants each spec to feel like, and what that means if you are planning a Hunter or Druid main for the November 4 launch. Everything here comes from Blizzard's September 30 deep dive. Blizzard also notes that class abilities and talents may keep changing during the beta, so treat specific tuning as a snapshot rather than a final sheet.
How Talents Work for Every Class in WoW Forever
Before getting into the two classes, it helps to know the shared rules, because they shape every build decision below.
- Talents unlock at level 10, the same as the original game.
- Trees keep the familiar number of rows. The one-point "gold medal" talents still sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, and Forever adds a new 16-point milestone.
- Some talents are identical to patch 1.12, some are adjusted, and some old talent buffs are now baseline. Blizzard calls out Blessing of Kings and Improved Mark of the Wild as examples.
- To change talents, including Legacy talents, you visit a class trainer in a major city.
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Hunter Changes at a Glance
Blizzard frames the Hunter update around one idea: a ranged combatant with a trusted companion. The changes give Hunters more flexibility in combat, give pets real identity, and give all three trees a clearer build direction.
| Change | What it does | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Aimed Shot baseline | Every Hunter learns it at level 20 | Marksmanship points are freed for other talents |
| Arcane Shot cooldown | No longer shared with Aimed Shot | Both can be used in the same window |
| Multi-Shot cooldown | Now shared with Aimed Shot | You choose between single target burst and cleave |
| Traps | Usable in combat, cooldown raised to 30 seconds | Traps become a live tool, not just a pull opener |
| Frost and Fire traps | Separate cooldowns | Freezing Trap no longer locks out your damage trap |
| Disengage | Threat reduction doubled | Safer in dungeons once the tank loses a mob |
| Aspect of the Beast | Also grants melee Attack Power | Supports melee Survival builds |
| Scorpid Sting | Reduces target hit chance by 2% | Was a Strength and Agility reduction |
Pets Now Scale With Your Gear
The biggest structural change is to pets. In Forever, pets gain increased stats based on their Hunter's gear, and in exchange pets can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats. Upgrading your own gear upgrades your pet, and you no longer need to beg a Priest or Druid to buff your cat in a group.
Pet ability access is also broader. Every pet family can learn Bite or Claw, sometimes both, and every family can learn Dive or Dash. On top of that, each family now has one ability unique to that family.
Every Pet Family Ability
| Pet family | Unique ability | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bat | Sonic Blast | Damage and spellcasting slow on target |
| Bear | Swipe | Damaging attack that hits 3 targets |
| Bird of Prey (formerly Owl) | Mine! | Damage and disarm target |
| Boar | Charge | Charge to and immobilize target, Attack Power on next pet attack |
| Carrion Bird | Demoralizing Screech | Damages nearby enemies and reduces their melee Attack Power |
| Cat | Prowl | Stealth and increased damage on next attack from Stealth |
| Crab | Pinch | Damage and movement slow |
| Crocolisk | Dismember | Damage and reduces target healing received by 50% |
| Fox (new) | Trickster's Dance | Increased dodge chance and attack speed for 12 seconds |
| Gorilla | Thunderstomp | Damages enemies in an area |
| Hyena | Tendon Rip | Movement slow and Bleed over time |
| Raptor | Savage Rend | Bleed over time on target |
| Scorpid | Poison | Stacking damage over time |
| Spider | Web | Immobilize target and damage over time |
| Tallstrider | Dust Cloud | Reduces target armor |
| Turtle | Shell Shield | Reduces damage taken and attack speed for 12 seconds |
| Wind Serpent | Lightning Breath | 20-yard range damaging attack |
| Wolf | Furious Howl | Increases party members' melee Attack Power |
This changes the old "just tame a cat or a boar" logic. A Crocolisk's 50% healing reduction is an obvious PvP pick, a Bird of Prey can disarm a melee target, a Spider can pin a runner, and a Wolf brings a party buff. Foxes are the only brand-new family, and Trickster's Dance gives them a defensive and offensive window in one button.
Beast Mastery Talent Highlights
Beast Mastery stays the pet tree, with a few additions that pull in the new Hawk summons.
- Deadly Aspects (formerly Improved Aspect of the Hawk) can also grant attack speed from melee attacks while Aspect of the Beast is active, which Blizzard says supports melee-leaning Survival builds.
- Endurance Training now includes the old Thick Hide, giving your pet Health and Armor in one talent.
- Focused Fire is new and increases all damage you and your pet deal while your pet is active.
- Aspect of the Monkey grants twice as much Dodge, and your pet gets half the benefit.
- Summon Hawk is the new 16-point gold medal talent. It deals instant damage and summons a Hawk to attack your target for 18 seconds. You can have up to 2 Hawks active, and it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot.
- Intimidation now requires Bestial Swiftness and also gives your pet 100% increased critical strike chance on its next attack.
- Bestial Discipline now grants Mana regeneration from Spirit while casting.
Marksmanship Talent Highlights
Marksmanship gets the most new active tools, and also the option to drop the pet entirely.
- Lethal Attacks (formerly Lethal Shots) moves to row 1 and increases critical strike chance on all attacks.
- Improved Stings moves to row 2, buffs Serpent Sting damage, shortens Viper Sting's cooldown and extends Scorpid Sting.
- Careful Aim is new and adds melee and ranged Attack Power equal to 20/40/60/80/100% of your Intellect.
- Rapid Killing is new. It reduces the Rapid Fire cooldown and buffs your next Shot when an enemy dies, or dies with your Serpent Sting on it.
- Lone Wolf is the new 11-point gold medal talent: 20% increased damage with all attacks while you have no active pet.
- Trueshot Aura moves up to row 4 and becomes the 21-point gold medal talent, with new lower-level ranks.
- Barrage now also affects Aimed Shot, alongside Multi-Shot and Volley, at a reduced damage bonus.
- Sniper Shot is the new 31-point gold medal talent: a 4-second cast, 15-second cooldown Shot that hits harder than Aimed Shot, has a 45-yard base range, and extends the range of your next 3 Shots by 10 yards.
Survival Talent Highlights
Survival is now explicitly the trap and melee tree.
- Improved Tracking merges Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying into increased damage against whatever creature type you are tracking.
- Entrapment always triggers when your trap triggers; more points increase the duration.
- Savage Strikes now increases all melee damage by 2/4%.
- Surefooted gives hit chance on all attacks and reduces the duration of movement impairing effects.
- Predator's Edge (new) raises melee critical damage and off-hand damage while dual-wielding.
- Counterattack becomes the 16-point gold medal talent.
- Resourcefulness (new) reduces Mana cost on Traps and melee abilities and can trigger Spirit-based Mana regeneration on crits.
- Expose Prey (new) lets attacks on your Hunter's Mark target trigger Mongoose Bite as if you had dodged.
- Strider Kick is the 21-point gold medal talent: an instant weapon strike that gives 30% movement speed for 3 seconds.
- Lacerating Strikes is the 31-point gold medal talent, adding a 21-second Bleed to Mongoose Bite.
What Hunters Still Cannot Do
Blizzard is clear that the class keeps its weaknesses. Hunters have one role, damage. They still have the 8-yard dead zone where ranged attacks are unavailable. Traps still drop only at your own location. And Hunters still cannot Stun or Interrupt. Plan your group comps around that.
Druid Changes at a Glance
For Druids, Blizzard's focus is making shapeshifting smoother and useful in more of the game, while sharpening each of Balance, Feral Combat and Restoration.
Shapeshifting Quality of Life
These are the changes most Druids will feel in the first hour.
- All potions and almost all similar consumables work in forms without cancelling the shapeshift. Rage potions and Thistle Tea are now usable by Druids too.
- Engineering bombs are the main exception. Most still cannot be used in form, but specific new recipes (SAF-T and EZ-Thro) can.
- Weapon enchantments and procs now work while shapeshifted, including weightstones, Crusader and Windfury Totem.
- Your auto attack DPS in Bear, Cat and Dire Bear Form matches your equipped weapon's DPS, with swing speed set to 1.0 or 2.5 seconds depending on the form. Abilities that deal weapon damage use those values too.
- Most doors and objects can be used without leaving form.
- Racial abilities work in form, including Shadowmeld, War Stomp and Walk on Air.
Baseline Ability Changes
| Ability | Change |
|---|---|
| Tiger's Fury | Removed, replaced by the Feral talent Shifting Power |
| Claw and Shred | Damage increased significantly |
| Lacerate | New baseline at level 42, stacking Bleed up to 5 times, high threat |
| Frenzied Regeneration | Heals 100% of max health over its duration (with enough Rage) |
| Growl | Cooldown matches Warrior Taunt |
| Demoralizing Roar | Identical to Demoralizing Shout at level 60 |
| Enrage | Generates 10 initial Rage |
| Revive | New out-of-combat resurrection at level 12 |
| Regrowth | Mana cost reduced significantly |
| Nature's Grasp | Baseline at level 10, usable in forms and indoors |
| Omen of Clarity | Baseline at level 20, Clearcasting never consumed by Wrath |
| Faerie Fire | Castable in Bear, Cat and Dire Bear Form, free, 6-second cooldown |
| Entangling Roots | Castable indoors |
| Hurricane | Cooldown removed |
| Wrath | Much cheaper Mana cost, lower damage to match |
Revive at level 12 is a big deal for leveling groups: a Druid can now pick up a dead party member outside combat without waiting for a Priest, Paladin or Shaman.
Balance Talent Highlights
- Genesis (new, row 1) increases all periodic damage and healing.
- Moonglow moves to row 2 and reduces the Mana cost of damaging spells only.
- Improved Moonfire costs 2 points instead of 5.
- Nature's Majesty (new) adds crit chance to spells and melee.
- Nature's Splendor is the 11-point gold medal talent and extends Moonfire, Rejuvenation, Regrowth and Insect Swarm.
- Insect Swarm moves here as the 16-point gold medal talent.
- Overgrowth (new) allows up to 3 targets in Entangling Roots at once.
- Eclipse (new) makes Wrath reduce the cast time of your next 2 Starfire casts, stacking up to 4 charges.
- Moonkin Form's party crit buff now applies to all spells and attacks, cannot stack with Leader of the Pack, lets you cast all non-healing spells, and doubles Omen of Clarity procs.
Feral Talent Highlights
Feral has the most redesigns, including the row with two gold medal talents.
- Heart of the Wild moves to row 1.
- Feral Swiftness works indoors and its Dodge bonus applies all the time.
- Thick Hide now converts Defense skill into Armor in forms, so Druid tanks benefit from Defense gear like other tanks.
- Feral Charge gets a Cat Form version with a 30-second cooldown.
- Shifting Power (16-point, Cat) instantly grants 40 Energy at a significant Mana cost, with a 16-second cooldown. Improved Shifting Power cuts that to 8 seconds.
- Primal Bite (16-point, Bear) is a 20 Rage attack for 100% weapon damage plus a bonus and very high threat. Blizzard chose this over Mangle.
- Predatory Strikes (new) raises crit damage by up to 20%.
- Natural Reaction (new) adds Dodge and a chance for 5 Rage on Dodge.
- Berserk is the 31-point gold medal talent: 15 seconds, 3-minute cooldown, clears and grants Fear immunity, removes Primal Bite's cooldown and makes it hit up to 3 targets, and adds 100% crit chance to Cat Form combo abilities.
Restoration Talent Highlights
- Gift of the Earthmother (new, 11-point) reduces the global cooldown of Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth by 0.5 seconds.
- Swiftmend becomes the 16-point gold medal talent and no longer consumes your Rejuvenation or Regrowth.
- Improved Tranquility also reduces Tranquility's cooldown by up to 60%.
- Living Spirit (new) increases Spirit.
- Wild Growth is the 31-point gold medal talent: target any party or raid member to put a front-loaded HoT on their whole party, pets included, ticking every second for 7 seconds, on a 6-second cooldown with a high Mana cost.
What Druids Still Lack
Blizzard keeps the trade-off intact: Druids can fill any role but cannot snare, Silence or Interrupt, and their crowd control is weaker. Their healing leans on HoTs that need planning. Expect to rely on groupmates for that missing utility.
Which Should You Roll for Launch?
If you like a pet and want freedom to build, the Hunter now offers three distinct directions: pet-centric Beast Mastery with Hawks, pet-free Marksmanship with Lone Wolf and Sniper Shot, or melee Survival with Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes. If you want one character that can tank, heal or deal damage, the Druid's shapeshift fixes remove most of the friction that used to come with that flexibility.
Either way, check the WoW Forever Leveling Guide 1-60 for route planning, and remember respecs get expensive: you will want a plan before you spend those first points at level 10.
