Steam Next Fest October 2026: Valve's 20 Most-Played Demos, Live Player Chart and What to Play Before It Ends Oct 26
Quick Answer · Steam Next Fest October 2026
• When it ends: Monday, October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT, which is 12:00 PM CT. Valve's wrap-up of the most-played demos goes live the same day.
• How big it is: more than 8,000 demos, roughly double June 2026. Output Lag counted 7,321 live in the fest on Saturday with about 153,000 people playing demos at once.
• Valve's top 20 so far: Worst Class Ever, Probably Stolen, ArcheAge Chronicles, Find the Needle, Fart Together, Character House, Frostrail, Loftia, just volleyball, Abyssal Lapidary, Mortuus, Dumpster Gang, HANDS OVER, Haunted Paws, Emberville, No Body No Problem!, Deadzone Rogue 2, Wyldheart, Grr Grr Gnomes and Never Be Alone.
• Biggest live demo: Probably Stolen, a cyberpunk shopkeeper sim from Questing Goose Studio and tinyBuild, with a peak of almost 40,000 concurrent players. The full game launches October 28.
• The trend: co-op "friendslop" party games dominate, with shopkeeping sims, survival shooters and idle desktop games close behind.
• Launching soon: Emberville (Oct 27), Probably Stolen (Oct 28), Fart Together (Oct 29), HANDS OVER (Oct 30), Loftia (Nov 3) and just volleyball (Nov 4).

Steam Next Fest always feels like walking into the world's biggest arcade with a free pass, and the October 2026 edition is the biggest one yet. There are so many demos this time that the hard part is not finding something to play. It is finding the handful worth your weekend before the whole thing shuts off on Monday.

Valve has already shared its list of the 20 most-played demos so far, and third-party trackers are pulling live player counts every hour. I put both together, checked every game's Steam page for dates and details, and sorted the list into what is actually worth downloading based on what you like to play. If you only have a couple of evenings left, start here.

When Steam Next Fest October 2026 Ends

According to Valve's Steamworks event page, the October 2026 edition runs from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT. For Central time, that means it closes on Monday, October 26 at 12:00 PM CT.

A few things to know about the finish line:

  • The fest page goes away at that time, along with the curated rows and the livestream tab.
  • Valve's official wrap-up featuring the games with the most-played demos launches on October 26, according to the same Steamworks page.
  • Demos do not always disappear with the fest. Some developers pull their demo when the event ends, others leave it up until launch. If a game in this list grabs you, do not assume you can come back next week.
  • The next edition is planned for February 2027, and a game can only take part in one Next Fest. If a developer used this one, this is the demo you get before launch.

Why This Next Fest Is So Huge

On the day before the event started, PC Gamer counted 8,011 entries on the press preview page, which it noted was roughly double June 2026's fest. For comparison, the June 2022 edition had just over a thousand. You can read the numbers and the commentary in PC Gamer's Steam Week in Review.

The flood is not all good news. PC Gamer's piece describes a wave of quick clones riding viral trends, and one of the clearest examples is the haystack genre. After Needle In A Haystack Simulator blew up on social media, copycats followed, and the developer of one of those games publicly accused another studio of copying its actual code and filed a copyright notice with Valve. One studio, Alliance Arts, even said it would not publish its planned demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux at all because it feared the idea would be cloned before launch.

That context matters when you look at the chart. One of Valve's top 20, Find the Needle, is itself part of that haystack wave. It may well be a perfectly fun automation game, but it is a good reminder that player counts measure curiosity, not quality.

Valve's Official Top 20 Most-Played Demos

IGN published Valve's list of the 20 most-played demos through the first part of the fest. Valve gave it in no particular order, so the table below is alphabetical. Release dates and studios come from each game's Steam store page and can still move.

The Live Chart: Who Is Actually Playing Right Now

Valve's list is a snapshot. For a moving picture, Output Lag's live Next Fest chart checks the player count of every demo through Steam's public API each hour. At its noon CT update on Saturday, October 24, it showed about 153,000 people playing demos across 6,382 demos with at least one player out of 7,321 in the fest.

The top of that chart looked like this:

  • Probably Stolen: about 26,100 playing, with a fest peak of 39,696.
  • Character House: about 11,000 playing, peak 17,489. It is an idle desktop game, so it keeps counting while it sits in the background.
  • Find the Needle: about 8,900 playing, also flagged as idle.
  • Worst Class Ever: about 8,900 playing, with a much higher peak of 27,684.
  • Melvor Idle 2: about 7,000 playing.
  • just volleyball: about 6,800 playing and the fastest climber of the past day, up nearly 1,800 players.
  • Abyssal Lapidary, Fart Together, Loftia and Frostrail round out the top ten.
Two notes on reading those numbers. First, idle and desktop-companion games inflate concurrent counts because people leave them running, which is why Output Lag labels them separately. Second, peak matters more than the current number for party games. Worst Class Ever and ArcheAge Chronicles both had huge peaks (ArcheAge reached 19,855) and lower midday numbers, which is exactly what you expect from games people play in evening groups.

The Demos Worth Your Weekend, by Taste

Twenty games is still a lot. Here is how I would split them depending on what you normally play.

If you play with a friend group: the friendslop wave

Polygon summed up this fest well: multiplayer party games, often called "friendslop," dominate the list. Polygon's rundown of the top 20 is worth a read for the vibes, but here is the short version.

  • Worst Class Ever is the breakout. Five players are students hiding among dozens of NPC classmates, sneaking snacks, passing notes and using phones, while one player is the teacher trying to spot them. Polygon reports Funcore says over 300,000 people have played the demo. It is the kind of game that works best with voice chat and terrible friends.
  • Fart Together is exactly what it sounds like. Two to four players steer one raft through obstacle courses using fart power, and the joke is that coordination is everything. It is listed as free to play and enters Early Access on October 29.
  • No Body No Problem! puts three players in the role of panicked suspects hiding a body and cleaning evidence while the fourth plays the cop who just knocked on the door.
  • HANDS OVER is a five-player horror table game where harmless mini-games turn into nerve tests, with influence cards to sabotage each other between turns. It launches in Early Access on October 30.
  • Dumpster Gang lets up to four raccoons knock over trash cans, steal shiny junk and dodge an Exterminator. Curve Games publishes it on December 3.
  • Haunted Paws is the gentle option: two puppies rescuing their owner from a haunted mansion, with a Friend's Pass so your partner can join for free.
  • Grr Grr Gnomes sends a crew of tiny gnomes island-hopping across an ocean, scavenging fuel and food and fleeing creatures. It is the furthest out, on January 19, 2027.

If you like shooters and survival

  • Frostrail is the one I would try first. It comes from FakeFish, the studio behind Barotrauma, and it is a survival FPS where your armored steam train is your base. You fuel the Eden Engine, reinforce the walls, mount weapon stations and push across a frozen wasteland full of revenants. Solo or co-op, Early Access in Q4.
  • Mortuus is a round-based zombies FPS for one to four players with a twist on the formula you already know: doors, perk machines, the mystery box and the exit are rebuilt on a procedurally generated map every run. It was one of the fastest climbers on Saturday.
  • Deadzone Rogue 2 is the sequel to a sci-fi FPS roguelite that Prophecy Games says passed half a million players. Expect builds from hundreds of augments, elemental weapons and up to three-player co-op.
  • Never Be Alone is open-world zombie survival set ten years after an outbreak, with a safezone to protect and human factions to deal with. Early Access on December 8.

If you want an RPG or an MMO to sink into

  • ArcheAge Chronicles is the biggest name on the list. XLGAMES is taking its MMO setting to Auroria with a much more action-focused combat style, and Polygon compares the feel to Phantom Blade Zero rather than World of Warcraft. Its demo peak of nearly 20,000 shows there is real appetite for a new MMO. Steam lists Early Access with no date yet.
  • Emberville is the one IGN singled out as "extremely promising." You wake in an underground magical prison where death does not stick, fight your way through, rescue townsfolk and rebuild their town. It enters Early Access this coming Tuesday, October 27, so the demo is basically a free trial for a game you can buy in three days.
  • Wyldheart pitches itself with "you are not the chosen one." You start as a peasant in a co-op fantasy RPG with classless skill trees, 19 backgrounds and bite-sized campaigns. Curve Games co-publishes.
  • Loftia is a cozy multiplayer life sim spread across floating islands, with farming methods like hydroponics and aquaponics, crafting and decorating in a shared world. It enters Early Access on November 3.

If you like management and odd little sims

  • Probably Stolen is the most-played demo of the fest for good reason. You run a shop on a dystopian space station where most of your margins live in legal gray zones. Every customer might be a security plant, a revolutionary or a fallen elite, and you decide whether to approve, refuse, report or look away. You can start as a gunsmith, chemist, water merchant, fence or farmer. The full game from Questing Goose Studio and tinyBuild launches October 28.
  • Abyssal Lapidary is a gothic management sim where you appraise ore, cut facets and craft jewelry for strange clients beneath a Victorian underground city. Its tagline, "some stones are worth a fortune, others stare back," tells you the tone.
  • Find the Needle starts you with a shovel and a haystack of about six million strands, then lets you automate the search with belts, balers and robotic arms. Fun loop, but remember the clone context above.
  • Character House is an idle desktop companion you dress up from hundreds of parts. It sits on your screen, syncs with your keystrokes and earns rewards while you work.

If you want something competitive and simple

  • just volleyball is the surprise. It is arcade volleyball with cursor aiming and fully manual movement, supporting everything from 1v1 to 6v6 online or offline. It was the biggest climber on Saturday and launches November 4.

Bigger-Name Demos Outside the Top 20

Indie co-op games own the chart, but several established series also have demos in this fest that are easy to miss in all that noise. These appear on Output Lag's live chart with their Steam release dates:

  • Stronghold 4 from Firefly Studios, listed for December 7.
  • Tropico 7 from Gaming Minds Studios, listed for January 28, 2027.
  • Northgard Battlegrounds, an auto battler spin-off, listed for October 27.
  • Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World from Square Enix, listed for December 3.
  • The Wolf Among Us Remastered from Telltale, listed for October 29.
  • Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, listed for November 3.
  • Warhammer Survivors from Auroch Digital, listed for November 10.
If you want something with a known pedigree rather than a lottery ticket, those are worth searching for directly on the fest page.

How to Get the Most Out of the Last 48 Hours

You do not need to play 20 demos. Here is a simple plan.

  • Pick three, not ten. One co-op game for your group, one solo game in your favorite genre and one wild card from the live chart.
  • Wishlist anything you enjoy. Wishlists and follows are how small studios get seen on launch day, and Steam will remind you when the game releases or goes on sale.
  • Play the near-term launches first. Emberville, Probably Stolen, Fart Together and HANDS OVER all launch within a week, so their demos double as a buying decision.
  • Leave feedback. Most of these games are still in development and Next Fest is the moment studios actually read the forums.
  • Watch your storage. Some demos are big downloads. Uninstall the ones you bounce off so they do not quietly eat your drive.
  • Mind the clock. The fest closes at 12:00 PM CT Monday. If you work Monday morning, Sunday night is effectively your last session.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Steam Next Fest October 2026 end?

It ends on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 10:00 AM Pacific, which is 12:00 PM Central. The event started on October 19 at the same time of day. Valve publishes its official wrap-up of the most-played demos on October 26.

What is the most played Steam Next Fest demo right now?

Probably Stolen - Cyberpunk Shopkeeper Sim leads the live charts, with a peak of almost 40,000 concurrent players according to Output Lag. Worst Class Ever had the second-highest peak among non-idle games, and Valve's own top 20 list includes both.

How many demos are in Steam Next Fest October 2026?

More than 8,000. PC Gamer counted 8,011 entries on the press preview page the day before the fest began, about double the June 2026 edition. Output Lag's live tracker counted 7,321 demos in the fest on Saturday, with 6,382 of them having at least one active player.

Do Steam Next Fest demos stay up after the event?

It depends on the developer. The festival pages close when Next Fest ends, but some studios keep their demo available until launch while others take it down. If you want to try something, do it before Monday at noon Central to be safe.

Is ArcheAge Chronicles in Steam Next Fest?

Yes. XLGAMES' action MMORPG has a demo in the fest and made Valve's top 20 most-played list, with a peak above 19,000 concurrent players on Output Lag's chart. Steam lists it as an Early Access game with no release date announced yet.

When does Probably Stolen release?

Probably Stolen launches on Steam on October 28, 2026, from Questing Goose Studio and publisher tinyBuild. It is Windows only according to its store page.

What is friendslop?

It is a nickname for cheap, chaotic co-op party games built to be played with friends, often with physics jokes and voice chat. Fart Together, Worst Class Ever and Dumpster Gang are good examples from this fest, and they make up a big share of Valve's top 20.

When is the next Steam Next Fest?

Valve's Steamworks page says the next edition is planned for February 2027. Each game can only take part in one Next Fest, so many of these demos will not return for that one.

Final Take

This Next Fest is noisy, and a lot of what is in it does not deserve your time. The top of the chart is a different story. Probably Stolen and Emberville are the two I would play before anything else, since both launch next week and the demos tell you everything you need to know. Frostrail is the most interesting survival pitch on the list, ArcheAge Chronicles is the one to watch if you want a new MMO, and Worst Class Ever is the best excuse to get your friends in a call this weekend. Get your three picks in before Monday at noon Central.
