Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine Launch Guide: Start Time, Doctrine Kit, Grímsvötn, Sombra & Roadhog Reworks
QUICK ANSWER · Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine · Oct 6
• Start time: Tuesday October 6, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. PT (1:00 p.m. CT, 2:00 p.m. ET, 18:00 UTC), per Blizzard's launch trailer description.
• New hero: Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support (Hero 54). Like every new hero since Season 10, he is unlocked for everyone at launch. No Battle Pass grind needed.
• New map: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, an Icelandic volcano prison and the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched in 2022.
• Reworks: Sombra moves from Damage to Support (Hotfix, Cyberspace, Weaken). Roadhog gets a two-burst Scrap Gun and the new Trash Compactor.
• Events: Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games Oct 6 to Nov 2 · Overwatch x Shadow Monarch from Oct 6 · Tech Witches Oct 9 to 26 · Team Drives Oct 29 to Nov 1.
• Cosmetics: Mythic Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang, Lúcio's first Mythic weapon Treblemaker (with a dancing frog), 5 Legendary + 3 Epic pass skins, up to 80 Mythic Prisms, Unvaulted Passes for Seasons 1 to 15.

Reign of Talon has been building to this for a full year, and today it finally tips over. Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine goes live on Tuesday, October 6, and it is one of the heaviest single-day drops the game has had in a long time: a brand new Support hero, a brand new Escort map, two of the most requested hero reworks in the game's history, a Halloween limited-time mode that changes every week, an anime collaboration, and a Battle Pass system that now lets you go back and finish old passes you missed.

If you already read our BlizzCon reveal breakdown of Doctrine and Season 5 from September, think of this as the launch-day companion. That piece covered the announcement and the hero trial weekend. This one is about what you actually log into today: when the servers flip, what Doctrine's kit looks like after the trial, how Sombra and Roadhog changed, which events run on which dates, and what is worth spending your Battle Pass progress on.

Everything below comes from Blizzard's own Season 5 overview post published October 5, the BlizzCon reveals post, Blizzard's launch trailer description, and reporting from Polygon. Where we lean on community or third-party data (ability numbers from the hero trial, for example), we label it. At the time of writing, Blizzard had not yet posted the full Season 5 patch notes on the official patch notes page. They usually appear when the season goes live, so treat any specific number in this guide as provisional until you see it there.

What Time Does Overwatch Season 5 Start?

Blizzard's launch trailer description says Season 5 "launches in-game TOMORROW at 11am PT," posted on October 5. That lines up with how Overwatch seasons have rolled out for years: one global moment, mid-day in North America, which means late evening in Europe and the early hours of Wednesday across Asia and Oceania.

Here is that time converted for the most common regions. The PT time is Blizzard's. The rest are our conversions, using daylight saving time where it currently applies (Australia's eastern states moved to AEDT on October 4).

A couple of practical notes for launch hour. On PC, the Battle.net launcher has sometimes offered a pre-download for big season patches, so open it a little early and check for the update arrow. Console players should let the update finish before queueing, because mid-download matchmaking tends to throw version mismatch errors. And expect the first hour of Competitive to be chaotic: new hero, new map, a Support Sombra nobody has played on live servers. If you care about your rank, a few Quick Play games first is not a bad idea.

Doctrine: Overwatch's New Support Hero

Doctrine is the headline. Blizzard describes him as "our long-awaited new Support Hero and a figure from Doomfist's bloodied past," and the Season 5 story starts with Doomfist breaking him out of Grímsvötn. The pitch is a vampire fantasy without literal vampires: a cyberneticist who learned to manipulate lifeforce with technology, first to keep himself and his brother alive, and later in ways that got him locked away. The community Overwatch Wiki lists his real name as Tamuka Yeukai, from Zimbabwe, which Blizzard's BlizzCon deep dive tied to his shared history with Doomfist.

How to unlock Doctrine

You do not need to do anything. Blizzard's policy since Season 10 is that "all new heroes will be immediately unlocked when they launch," as laid out in its developer update on hero releases. Doctrine is available to everyone the moment Season 5 is live. The one exception is brand new accounts, which still have to finish the first-time user experience before the full roster opens. If you see guides telling you to reach Battle Pass tier 45, that rule is from the early Overwatch 2 era and no longer applies.

Doctrine's kit at a glance

Blizzard's Season 5 post describes the kit in broad strokes. His Eternal Scepter "heals allies and damages enemies from mid-to-long range." His "mechanical bat-like drones empower the team with healing and increased attack speed." Infuse "lets you empower Doctrine's abilities when the moment calls for something a little more potent." And his Ultimate lets you "redistribute" life: allies gain Overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited.

Polygon published the full ability list from the BlizzCon build, and it matches Blizzard's description:

  • Eternal Scepter (weapon): Mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies. Infused: fires a larger piercing blast.
  • Infuse: Adds a powerful effect to your next ability.
  • Shrouded Momentum: Rush horizontally with damage reduction. Infused: gain free flight.
  • Invigorating Drones: Deploy drones to an ally, granting attack speed and healing. Infused: also deploy drones to yourself.
  • Deliverance (Ultimate): Launch a swarm of drones that reduces enemy maximum health and grants allies overhealth.
  • Passive (Survivor sub-role): Movement abilities start passive health regeneration.
The perks from that same BlizzCon build, per Polygon:
  • Minor, Saving Grace: Invigorating Drones heal for 40 health when applied.
  • Minor, Sanguine Siphon: Heal for 50% of damage dealt with Infused Eternal Scepter.
  • Major, Transfusion: Reduce Infuse's cooldown from damage and healing dealt.
  • Major, Cost of Life: Sacrifice 25 maximum health. Eternal Scepter healing is increased by 20%.

Trial-build numbers (community data, may change today)

The community-run Overwatch Wiki documented values from the September 12 to 14 hero trial. These are not from official patch notes and Blizzard can and often does tune a hero between a trial and launch, so check today's notes before you build a game plan around them.

AbilityTrial-build values (per Overwatch Wiki)
Base health250
Eternal ScepterHitscan, 60 damage or healing per shot with falloff, 18 ammo, 1.67 shots/s. Infused shot: 90 damage / 120 healing, pierces, no ammo cost
Infuse2 charges, 8 second cooldown
Shrouded Momentum8 second cooldown, 40% damage reduction while rushing
Invigorating Drones120 healing over 6 seconds, +30% attack speed, 30 m range
DeliveranceEnemy max health reduced up to 50%, allies gain up to 150 overhealth, effects last 8 seconds before decaying

How Doctrine plays

Polygon's hands-on called him "instantly fascinating and fun" while noting he has "some complexity." The way his kit fits together in the trial build is pretty readable once you spend a few games with him.

His weapon does both jobs at once, like Juno, Ana or Jetpack Cat, so you are always either healing or shooting with the same click. Infuse is the decision layer: you hold it to empower the next thing you do. A charged scepter shot that pierces through a whole frontline, a Shrouded Momentum that turns into free flight to escape or reposition, or a drone cast that buffs both your target and yourself. With two charges, the real skill is deciding when to spend them on output and when to save one for getting out of trouble.

Invigorating Drones are the piece most teams will feel. An attack speed boost on a hitscan carry or a brawl Tank is a damage boost, and pairing it with healing over time makes Doctrine a natural partner for heroes who want to commit. Deliverance is a fight-starter rather than a panic button: cutting enemy max health while your team gets overhealth is exactly what you want to throw right before a dive or as a cart fight starts, not after everyone is already dead.

Shrouded Momentum is basically his version of a Wraith Form-style escape, and because his passive kicks off health regen when you use a movement ability, he should be one of the more self-sufficient Supports when divers jump him. The skill check is positioning his mid-to-long-range scepter so he is useful without being the easiest target on the map.

If you want cosmetics on day one, Blizzard confirmed a Crimson Regent Doctrine Legendary skin as part of the Ultimate Battle Pass.

Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, the New Escort Map

Grímsvötn is a real volcano under the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland, and Overwatch's version is a former Watchpoint built into a volcanic fissure. Blizzard's description is very on brand: "Most prisons keep people in, but Watchpoint: Grímsvötn was built to make sure they never got out." It was once an Overwatch facility, later run by Helix, and housed "some of the world's most dangerous criminals," including Doomfist "once upon a time." Now Talon has taken it over, and the payload route runs straight through the scene of Doctrine's escape.

Polygon calls it the first new Escort map in nearly four years, and Blizzard's trailer copy describes it as the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched. The last two Escort additions, Circuit Royal and Shambali Monastery, arrived at the October 2022 relaunch, so that tracks.

Blizzard is clearly hinting there is lore to find. The post mentions "fire, ice, stolen technology, forgotten prisoners, and more" and suggests you "take a second to look around between fights." As with any new map, the first week in Quick Play is the best time to learn sightlines and health pack spots before you meet it in Competitive. We do not yet have an official map layout or checkpoint breakdown, so we will not guess at chokes or flanks here.

Sombra Moves to Support

This is the change that will dominate forums for weeks. Blizzard calls it "one of the biggest changes we've ever made to an existing Hero": Sombra is now a Support, specifically what Blizzard describes as a "Support Tactician."

The two official headline abilities:

  • Hotfix lets Sombra target an ally for healing after a brief cast. It can even be used while Invisible without immediately breaking stealth.
  • Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies while inflicting the new Weaken status on enemies, which reduces their damage and healing effectiveness.
Associate game director Alec Dawson told Polygon in a BlizzCon interview that the goal was never simply "make Sombra a healer." He said the team wanted to keep "the soul of her" intact and avoid a version where "all she does is heal now." He described Hotfix as healing teammates "for a large amount over a 12-second period," and said it can be "very, very powerful" when placed on a Winston or Genji about to dive in.

Third-party coverage from The Click, based on the BlizzCon build, reports that she keeps her Machine Pistol, Translocator and EMP, and lists perks such as Life Hack (EMP also applies Hotfix to nearby allies), Cybersecurity, Data Packet and CTRL ALT ESC. Those names and effects come from the event build, not today's patch notes, so treat them as likely rather than locked.

What this means in practice: Sombra still wants to take off-angles and pick fights, but now every flank should also be setting up a teammate. A good Support Sombra pre-places Hotfix on her diver, Translocates to a second angle, and drops Cyberspace where it both keeps her team alive and Weakens the enemies they are fighting. If you were a Damage Sombra main, your mechanics still matter. Your job description changed.

Roadhog's Rework

Roadhog's changes are smaller on paper but could matter just as much for the Tank meta. At BlizzCon, game director Ben Bell promised that "Roadhog will now actually be able to help out his team, plus his hook then instant death combo should be a lot less frustrating to play against," according to Output Lag's stage report.

Blizzard's Season 5 post confirms two concrete changes:

  • Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley, with a stronger center projectile in each.
  • Trash Compactor, a new ability, swallows incoming enemy projectiles, then sends back an explosive shot whose damage scales with how much punishment you absorbed.
Trash Compactor is the interesting one. It gives Roadhog a way to stand in front of his team and turn incoming fire into a threat of his own, which is exactly the "help out his team" direction Blizzard described. Expect poke compositions to think twice about dumping projectiles into him. Exact numbers, and whether Chain Hook itself changed, should be in today's patch notes.

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games (October 6 to November 2)

The Halloween event is a new limited-time mode built around dying. You start as a random hero and come back from every death with random new powers, stacking strange combinations as the match goes on.

There is a community meta-layer too. Complete challenges to collect Offerings, then pledge them to Ashe, Moira, or Winston. Whichever hero has the most Offerings gets summoned into the mode next, and by the final week all three will have "risen from the grave." Blizzard says the madness grows through the event, "eventually bringing the roster to 20 playable Heroes."

Each week also brings a new Event Pass with spooky rewards and a milestone at the end. Pledging Offerings earns Battle Pass XP, so even if you mostly play Competitive, dipping into the event for the repeatable challenge is a cheap way to push your main pass.

Overwatch x Shadow Monarch (Solo Leveling Collab)

The anime collaboration this season is with Solo Leveling. Blizzard lists five skins:

  • Genji × Sung Jinwoo
  • Reaper × Igris
  • Anran × Cha Hae-In
  • Reinhardt × Iron
  • Lifeweaver × Choi Jong-In
There is a date discrepancy to be aware of. Blizzard's own Season 5 post says the collab runs October 6 to 19. Polygon's Oct 5 article lists October 6 to 26. We are going with Blizzard's date, but if you are on the fence about a collab skin, check the in-game shop timer rather than assuming you have three weeks.

Season 5 Cosmetics: Battle Pass, Mythics and Shop

Battle Pass skins

The Season 5 pass is fully Halloween-themed. Per Blizzard:

  • Legendary: Ghostly Belle Ashe, Jack O' Ripper Soldier: 76, Ghost Bride Mei, Bat Empress Junker Queen, Autumn Fox Zenyatta
  • Epic: Skelly Bastion, Witching Hour Brigitte, Spectral Shroud Symmetra
  • Plus other seasonal cosmetics, currencies, and up to 80 Mythic Prisms
You can choose which Legendary to chase first, and the Swap Pool lets you replace an eligible Legendary with a returning skin. Blizzard names Witch Kiriko, Streetwear Hazard, Magma Sombra and Evening Wear Tracer among the returning options.

The Ultimate Battle Pass adds Crimson Regent Doctrine and Ghost Voyager Venture Legendary skins, 20 tier skips and 2,000 Overwatch Coins. The Starter Pack is Haunted Emre plus 1,000 Overwatch Coins.

Mythics: Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang and Treblemaker Lúcio

Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang is the new Mythic hero skin, with a celestial dragon companion that changes with your chosen colors. It has four levels, ending with "transformative VFX."

Treblemaker is Lúcio's first Mythic weapon skin, and yes, there is a tiny frog inside who dances. Blizzard's own words: "He dances. That's it, that's the Mythic." The four levels add healing and firing audio, graffiti-style frog kill effects, a reactive UI that grows with your final blows, and a full flourish and reload animation starring the frog. The 80 Prisms from the pass are enough to fully unlock one of these two, or another Mythic of your choice.

Shop collections

  • Tech Witches (October 9 to 26): D.Mon, Shion, Juno, Sierra and Jetpack Cat get high-tech witch skins.
  • Formalwear Legendaries: Polygon reports new stylish Legendary shop skins for Mizuki, Domina, Cassidy, Ashe (and B.O.B.), Moira and Ana.
  • Dokiwatch returns: Polygon lists Mercy, Illari, Lifeweaver, Ramattra and Anran, and Blizzard's trailer copy calls it "Dokiwatch 2.0."

Unvaulted Passes: Finish Old Battle Passes

This might be the best long-term change in Season 5. Unvaulted Passes bring back revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 to 15 so you can earn eligible rewards you missed.

The key details from Blizzard:

  • Progress you already made carries over, including Free track progress. Picking up an Unvaulted Pass unlocks eligible Premium rewards up to the point you had already reached.
  • You can progress one Unvaulted Pass alongside the current Battle Pass, with match XP counting toward both.
  • When you finish one, it rolls into the next available pass unless you choose another.
  • Once acquired, an Unvaulted Pass stays on your account permanently.
  • Unvaulted Passes do not include Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, or Mythic hero and weapon skins.
If you are a returning player who skipped a few years, pick the old pass with the skin you regret missing most and let it run in the background all season.

Team Drives come back late in the season. Queue solo or with friends, and when you win, matched teammates automatically stick together for the next game. Staying together boosts progression through Gladiator Ranks, Hero Bans and Map Voting still apply, and rewards include Competitive Points, Player Card Frames and a Dynamic Title for the first 10,000 groups to finish the final Trial. Blizzard's one warning: finish your Competitive placements before jumping in. The launch trailer description also mentions Drives coming to Quick Play this season, with no extra detail yet.

When does Season 5 end?

Blizzard has not published an end date. What we know: Season 5 closes out the Reign of Talon story, Mystery Madness runs through November 2, and at BlizzCon the team said Season 6 brings the tenth new hero of 2026, someone "investigating certain parts of the world." Overwatch Spotlight returns in February 2027 with next year's roadmap. We will update when an end date is official rather than guess.

Launch Day Checklist

  • Read the patch notes first. Once they post, check Doctrine, Sombra and Roadhog numbers against the trial values above.
  • Play Doctrine in Quick Play or the event mode before taking him into Competitive. Learn when to spend Infuse charges.
  • Run Grímsvötn a few times in Quick Play to learn routes before it shows up in ranked.
  • Pick an Unvaulted Pass right away so it collects XP from your very first match.
  • Choose your first Legendary on the new pass and check the Swap Pool if none of the new skins appeal.
  • Pledge Offerings in Mystery Madness for free Battle Pass XP.
  • Check the Shadow Monarch timer in the shop if you want a collab skin, since the end date differs between sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does Overwatch Season 5 start?

Season 5: A Grim Doctrine launches on October 6, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. PT, according to Blizzard's launch trailer description. That is 1:00 p.m. CT, 2:00 p.m. ET, 18:00 UTC and 7:00 p.m. in the UK. In Japan, Korea and eastern Australia it is the early morning of Wednesday, October 7.

Is Doctrine free in Overwatch?

Yes. Since Season 10, Blizzard has unlocked every new hero for all players the moment they launch. You do not need the Battle Pass or any tier progress to play Doctrine. Brand new accounts still need to finish the first-time user experience before the full roster opens up.

What are Doctrine's abilities?

Doctrine uses the Eternal Scepter, which heals allies and damages enemies. His abilities are Infuse (empowers his next ability or shot), Shrouded Momentum (a horizontal rush with damage reduction that becomes free flight when Infused) and Invigorating Drones (healing and attack speed on an ally, also on himself when Infused). His Ultimate, Deliverance, reduces enemy maximum health and gives allies overhealth.

Is Sombra a Support hero now?

Yes. As of Season 5, Sombra moves from Damage to Support. Her new Hotfix heals an ally after a brief cast and can be used while Invisible, and Cyberspace heals allies inside its area while applying Weaken to enemies, reducing their damage and healing.

What changed with Roadhog in Season 5?

Roadhog's Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger center projectile in each. His new ability, Trash Compactor, swallows incoming enemy projectiles and fires back an explosive shot whose damage scales with how much he absorbed. Blizzard says the goal is for him to help his team more and for the hook combo to be less frustrating to play against.

Is Grímsvötn a new map?

Yes. Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is a new Escort map set in an Icelandic volcano prison, where Doomfist breaks Doctrine free. Blizzard calls it the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched, and Polygon notes it is the first new Escort map in nearly four years.

How long does Mystery Madness last?

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games runs from October 6 to November 2. Each week brings a new Event Pass, and community Offerings decide whether Ashe, Moira or Winston joins the mode next, with all three in by the final week.

When does the Overwatch Solo Leveling collab end?

Blizzard's Season 5 post says Overwatch x Shadow Monarch runs October 6 to 19. Polygon lists October 6 to 26. Go by the in-game shop timer to be safe.

What are Unvaulted Passes?

Unvaulted Passes are revised versions of the Battle Passes from Seasons 1 to 15. Your previous progress carries over, including Free track progress, and you can level one alongside the current pass at the same time. They stay on your account permanently but do not include coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles or Mythic skins.

When does Overwatch Season 5 end?

Blizzard has not announced an end date yet. The season closes the Reign of Talon story, Mystery Madness runs until November 2, and Season 6 is confirmed to bring the tenth new hero of 2026.

Final Word

A Grim Doctrine is the payoff for a year of Reign of Talon storytelling, and it is stacked: a Support hero built around a real decision layer with Infuse, a Sombra who might reshape what Support even means in this game, a Roadhog who can finally soak up a poke comp, and a Battle Pass system that respects returning players. Log in at 11 a.m. PT, read the patch notes before you trust any number, and spend your first few games in Quick Play learning Doctrine and Grímsvötn. The ladder will still be there when you are ready.
