OSRS
Skill Training Guide · OSRS 2026
The fastest 99 in every skill — per-skill XP/hour methods, profit-positive alternatives, and breakpoint unlocks. Combat skills can be taken to 99 in under 100 hours with the right setup. Skilling 99s range from 40 hours (FletchingFletching) to 300+ hours (RunecraftRunecraft and AgilityAgility). Full-AFK options and quest shortcuts included.

How Long Does It Take to Get 99 in OSRS?

From level 1 to 99, the base XP requirement is 13,034,431. At 250K XP/hour (a reasonable mid-high rate), that's 52 hours of pure training. In reality, most skills take 100-200 hours at realistic rates — training is rarely at theoretical max-efficiency 100% of the time, and many skills have plateaus where fast methods require specific unlocks or gear.

What's the Fastest Way to Train Combat in OSRS?

The fastest combat training method depends on your starting stats and budget:

Nightmare Zone
The universal combat grind
Nightmare Zone (NMZ) with absorption potions is the AFK standard. Set up a custom rumble with Count Draynor + Dessous (both slow hitters, predictable), use Dharok's greataxe at 1 HP. Rates: 300-400K Combat XP/hour, mostly AFK. Works for Attack/Strength/Defence simultaneously.
Chinchompa Training
The fastest Ranged method
Chinchompa (Maniacal monkeys in Monkey Madness II unlock area) at 85+ Ranged delivers 900K-1.1M Ranged XP/hour. Expensive (5-10M/hour in chins), but the fastest XP in the game for any combat skill.
Sand Crab / Ammonite Crab
Budget afk combat
Sand crabs (Hosidius) for beginners, Ammonite crabs (Fossil Island) for mid-game. No supply cost, 200-350K Combat XP/hour. Lasts indefinitely on a single aggression reset (logging out and back in resets aggression every 9 minutes).

Quest XP to Speed Up Combat

Several quests give massive combat XP shortcuts:

  • Monkey Madness II — 35K Attack + 35K Strength + 35K Defence + 35K Hitpoints XP rewards + quest unlocks
  • Dragon Slayer II — 50K+ in each of Attack/Strength/Defence/Hitpoints
  • Song of the Elves — 40K in each of Agility/Construction/Farming/Herblore/Hunter/Mining/Smithing/Woodcutting
A combat-focused quest cape grind can save 20-30 hours of ground-up training.

What's the Fastest Way to 99 Prayer?

PrayerPrayer is the single most budget-dependent skill. Three tiers of method:

MethodXP/hourCost per XPTotal GP to 99
Regular bones (chaos altar)300-400K0.2-0.3 GP/XP3-4M (effectively free)
Dragon bones at gilded altar600-800K3-5 GP/XP30-50M
Superior dragon bones at gilded altar800-1M8-12 GP/XP80-120M
Ensouled dragon head + bones1-1.2M10-15 GP/XP100-150M
Prayer optimization: Blessed bone shards (new in 2025) from the Blessed bone shards collection system offer 1.3M+ XP/hour if you can source them efficiently. Check the wiki for current best methods — the Prayer meta shifts as new content releases.

What's the Fastest Skill to 99?

FletchingFletching. Cutting magic longs from magic logs + bowstrings delivers 1.5M+ XP/hour at 85+. From 1-99 takes ~30-40 hours of attention-heavy clicking. Profitable (or near break-even) along the way.

Runner-up: CookingCooking at 99. Cooking sharks at Hallowed Sepulchre's cooking lounge + Cooking cape boost hits 1.5M+ XP/hour and can be partially AFK.

Third: FiremakingFiremaking. Wintertodt from 1-99 is 120-150 hours, but firemaking outside of Wintertodt (tithe farm method) gets 1M+ XP/hour at high levels.

Which Skills Actually Make Money to 99?

Profit-positive skills at 99 (methods that earn GP during the training grind):

Profit-positive
Skill earns while training
RunecraftRunecraft (ZMI altar pays 2M+ per hour past 77), HerbloreHerblore (decanting + potion production pays 1-2M/hour), ThievingThieving at Ardougne Knights (1.5M+/hour), HunterHunter at Herbiboar or Black chinchompas (2-3M/hour + huge XP).
Break-even
Skill pays for its own supplies
FishingFishing at Tempoross and Sacred eels pays 400-600K/hour. MiningMining at Motherlode Mine yields 200-400K/hour plus prospector outfit. WoodcuttingWoodcutting doesn't profit much but can be passive while doing other content.
Buyable (cost GP to train)
You pay GP for fastest XP
PrayerPrayer (30-150M to 99), ConstructionConstruction (100-200M to 99 at mahogany homes or planks), CraftingCrafting (50-100M to 99 at battlestaves), SmithingSmithing (50-80M at Blast Furnace gold bars).

What Are the Combat Achievement Tiers for Skilling?

Several Combat Achievements (CAs) have skilling requirements that can shortcut your training path:

  • Hallowed Sepulchre — 92 Agility required for floor 5. Unlocks one of the best passive Agility XP methods in the game.
  • Zalcano — 70 Mining + 70 Smithing. Provides Smithing XP + Tome of Fire unlock for Firemaking.
  • Guardians of the Rift — 27 Runecraft required. Key mid-game Runecraft training.

What's the "Buyable" Skill Method Strategy?

Buyable skills (Prayer, Construction, Herblore, Crafting, Smithing) are those where you pay GP to accelerate XP. Strategy for each:

Prayer
AFK-ability = highest priority
Superior dragon bones at gilded altar past 70 Prayer. Stock 20-30 at a time, burn through and restock. Fully AFK with nochange timer. Path to 99: 80M GP, 40-50 hours.
Construction
Time-intensive but passive
Mahogany planks or oak planks at POH (Player-Owned House). Requires steady plank restocking from servant. 100M-200M to 99, 80-120 hours. Unlocks high-level gilded altar for Prayer.
Herblore
Profit-neutral at 94+
Pre-94 herblore is a money pit. At 94+ Herblore, super combat decanting is profit-neutral or positive. Plan to spend 50-80M from 1-94, then the last 5 levels (94-99) are free via decanting.
Crafting
Battlestaves → dragon hide
Battlestaves to 77, then dragon hides to 99. 50-80M GP total. Break-even to slight-loss, depending on market prices.

How Do I Max an OSRS Account?

"Max" = 99 in every skill (23 total). Typical total time: 1,500-2,500 hours of dedicated play. Real-world timeline:

  • Part-time player (10h/week): 3-5 years
  • Serious grinder (20-30h/week): 18-30 months
  • Full-time: 12-18 months
Fastest-known "efficiency-optimized" max time on a main is ~1,200 hours by elite players using spreadsheet-optimized training paths.

Max strategy tip: The last 99 most players hit is usually AgilityAgility or RunecraftRunecraft because both are time-intensive and relatively passive. Both reward strong endgame QoL unlocks (Rada's blessing for Agility; Abyss pouches for Runecraft), so delay them strategically — grind them after you've earned the GP from faster buyable skills.

What's the Progression Path from Low-Level to Max?

Optimal order for a zero-to-max account:

  • Combat 1-70 (early quests, starter zones) — 30-50 hours
  • Skill foundation 1-60 in each gathering skill — 40-60 hours
  • Quests unlock shortcuts (DS2, SotE, MMII, Kourend grandmaster) — 40-60 hours
  • Slayer 1-85 while progressing combat — 100-150 hours
  • Bossing for GP (Vorkath, Zulrah, GWD) to fund buyable skills — 50-100 hours
  • Buyable skills (Prayer, Herblore, Crafting, Construction, Smithing) — 80-120 hours
  • Profit-positive skills to 99 (Runecraft, Hunter, Thieving) — 100-150 hours
  • Last-push skills (Agility, Slayer, Mining) — 100-200 hours
Total: ~1,800 hours realistic. Compressed under 1,200 hours for elite speedrunners.

Per-Skill Deep Dive: Combat Skills

Attack, Strength, Defence

Attack
Weapon damage scaling
Base formula: damage output = weapon strength + (Str level × 0.1). Key breakpoints: 60 Attack (Dragon weapons), 70 Attack (Whip), 75 Attack (Ghrazi), 85 Attack (Scythe of Vitur).
Strength
Damage multiplier
The most impactful combat stat for melee DPS. 99 Strength vs. 80 Strength = ~18% more max hit. Always prioritize Strength XP when training melee.
Defence
Tank vs. offensive pure
Each Defence level reduces incoming damage ~1-2%. Some players intentionally keep Defence at 1 for "pure" PvP builds (can access 1-def combat brackets). Mainstream PvM benefits from 80+ Defence for dragon-level boss survival.

Ranged

Ranged breakpoints
Gear-gated levels
70 Ranged (Magic shortbow), 75 Ranged (Dark bow, Toxic blowpipe), 80 Ranged (Masori-f, Zaryte crossbow), 85 Ranged (Twisted bow). At 99 Ranged: +14% accuracy over 70, meaningful at high-magic-level opponents.

Magic

Magic rotation
Splashing to AoE
Splashing (iron-armor + missing attacks) is the classic AFK method — 7-10K XP/hour, 100% AFK. At 94+ Magic: Ice Barrage at NPCs with safespots for fast XP. At 95+: Ancient spellbook for dungeon content.

Prayer

Prayer priorities
Specific breakpoints
Level 43 (Protect Item), 52 (Hard Prayers like Chivalry), 70 (Piety/Rigour), 77 (Augury). Augury is the biggest unlock for mage PvM. Rush to 77 for any magic-focused boss or raid.

Per-Skill Deep Dive: Gathering Skills

Redwoods + Sulliuscep
99 via Redwoods (Sulliuscep in Fossil Island) at 70+ requires Crystal axe (50M investment). Alternative: Sulliuscep logs at level 80-99 for faster XP. Rate at 99: 100-140K XP/hour.
Tempoross + Sacred eels
Tempoross at 35+ Fishing is the primary method for XP + supply farming. Reward shop includes Spirit angler's outfit (+ 2.5% XP). At 82+: Sacred eels (1-2M gil/hour + XP).
Motherlode Mine → Amethyst
Motherlode Mine to 71 then Amethyst (71-99) in Mining Guild. Motherlode gives pass gold ore + XP. Amethyst gives 70-90K XP/hour + gems.
Herbiboar + chinchompas
Herbiboar (80 Hunter, 31 Farming) is the classic Hunter XP + herb income method. Black chinchompas (73+) in Wilderness are 1.5M+ gil/hour + top XP. High-level Hunter diversifies your supply pipeline.

Per-Skill Deep Dive: Artisan Skills

Battlestaves → dragon hide
1-77: Battlestaves (buy battlestaves + orbs, make water battlestaves). 77-99: Dragon hide set making. 99 Crafting requires ~50-80M GP total. Profit-neutral to slight loss.
Blast Furnace gold
Blast Furnace at 40+ for gold bar smithing. 70-80K XP/hour + 800K-1.2M GP. Requires Crown of Ice & Gold (5M unlock). Alt method: dart making (Fletching + Smithing combo).
Magic long bows
1-99 at 85+ = 1.5M XP/hour. Stock up magic logs + bowstrings. Profitable to slight loss depending on price fluctuations.
ZMI + pouches
The slowest 99 skill. ZMI altar (91+ Runecraft with pouches + essence mining) is the optimal method. 60-80K XP/hour + 1.2-1.8M gil/hour. Plan for 300+ hours of dedicated training.
Secondary-heavy
Herblore is buyable from 70+. Super combat decanting at 94+ makes it profit-positive. Before 94: expect to spend 50-80M to 99.
Mahogany homes → planks
Mahogany Homes at 40+ (contract-based training) is more efficient than pure plank building. At 80+: mahogany planks at POH for 700K-1M XP/hour. Total cost to 99: 100-200M GP.

Per-Skill Deep Dive: Support Skills

The best skill to grind
Slayer gives XP + combat XP + monster drop rewards + Slayer-specific rewards (Abyssal whip, trident pieces, etc.). 95 Slayer unlocks Alchemical Hydra. Total time to 99 Slayer: 300-500 hours. This is where ironman accounts spend the majority of playtime.
Courses + Hallowed Sepulchre
Lowest XP/hour but best access via Sepulchre (92+). Sepulchre gives 60-80K XP/hour + Dark bark + unique rewards (Rada's blessing 4). Total time to 99: 200-300 hours.
Ardougne Knights
Ardougne Knights with 91+ Thieving nets 1.5M+ GP/hour + top XP/hour. The most profitable non-combat training method in OSRS. Total time to 99: 80-120 hours.
Tree runs + herb runs
Farming is passive — "runs" take 10-15 minutes per tree/herb/fruit tree cycle (every 80 minutes real time). Daily tree runs give 200-400K XP per session. Plan to do 2-3 runs per day for steady progression.
Sharks + Sepulchre cooking
Cooking is profit-neutral at 99. Fastest method: Sharks at the Hallowed Sepulchre cooking lounge + Cooking cape boost = 1.4M+ XP/hour.

Skill Training Quest XP Rewards

Quest completion gives passive XP. Key XP-reward quests:

QuestXP rewards
Monkey Madness II35K each in 4 combat skills + Magic
Dragon Slayer II50K+ each in Attack/Str/Def/HP + 25K combat
Song of the Elves40K each in Agility/Construction/Farming/Herblore/Hunter/Mining/Smithing/Woodcutting
