Old School RuneScape has its date for the scariest mode it has ever shipped. In a blog posted on October 22, 2026, Jagex confirmed that Hardcore Worlds launch on Wednesday, November 4, and for the first time laid out exactly how death, resets, transfers and the economy will work.
We first wrote about Hardcore Worlds when Jagex put it on the roadmap next to The Fractured Archive. Back then the pitch was simple: separate worlds, one life, a proper economy. The new blog goes much further. It names every activity that is unsafe, explains the Reset versus Transfer choice in detail, adds a brand new hub in Death's Office, and proposes some meaningful changes to Escape Crystals that will affect the main game too.
With a little over a week to go, here is everything that is confirmed, what it means for how you should play, and a prep plan so your first character does not end up sitting in Death's Office on day one.
What Hardcore Worlds Are
Hardcore Worlds are a permanent new world type where every character is playing with a single life. They are not a seasonal league and not a temporary event. Jagex is clear that they are sticking around for the long term.
The key points from the blog:
- Fresh characters only. You start on Tutorial Island with a new character. You cannot bring an existing main into Hardcore Worlds.
- Same pace as the main game. No XP multipliers, no drop rate changes and no boosts of any kind.
- A real economy. Unlike Leagues or Deadman seasons, trading and the Grand Exchange are not restricted, and the worlds do not reset on a timer.
- Shared save profile. Your character uses the same save profile as the main game, which is what makes the Transfer option possible when you die.
How to Get Into Hardcore Worlds on November 4
Jagex walked through the exact entry path.
Step 1: Make a new character
Start a fresh character and begin Tutorial Island as normal. Tutorial Island became a trackable miniquest with the October 22 new player improvements, so the first few minutes should feel a bit smoother than the last time you did it.
Step 2: Find Death's Delegate
On Tutorial Island, look for a new NPC called Death's Delegate. Jagex describes it as a mini-sized reaper standing near the Magic Instructor's house and Paul, the Ironman Tutor.
Step 3: Visit Death's Office and accept the challenge
Death's Delegate sends you to Death's Office, where you speak to Death and accept his challenge in person. From there you hop to a Hardcore World and arrive outside Lumbridge Castle with your starter gear, just like any brand new character arriving on the mainland.
Death's Office becomes a public hub
One change that will be visible to everyone: Death's Office becomes un-instanced on all worlds. For the first time you will see other players gathered around Death's desk. Jagex wants it to work as a hub for people starting their Hardcore journey, players deciding what to do after a death, and anyone looking to join a Hardcore Worlds clan. You can return to the office at any time.
The Death Rules: Stricter Than Hardcore Ironman
This is the part that will catch experienced Hardcore Ironmen off guard. Hardcore Worlds use the Hardcore Group Ironman ruleset for death, not the standard Hardcore Ironman one. Jagex says you should expect 99 percent of deaths to send you straight back to Death's Office.
Activities that are unsafe on Hardcore Worlds
These are usually safe for a Hardcore Ironman, but on Hardcore Worlds a death in any of them counts:
- Barbarian Assault
- Camelot Training Room
- Chambers of Xeric
- Dream World during Lunar Diplomacy
- Fishing Trawler
- Inferno
- Magic Training Arena
- Nightmare Zone
- Pest Control
- Random Events
- Rogues' Den
- TzHaar Fight Cave
- Inside your Player-owned House
The POH entry is the sneaky one. Many players treat their house as a safe space for testing gear or fighting in the combat ring. On Hardcore Worlds, it is not.
Activities that stay safe
Jagex listed a short set of exceptions:
- Castle Wars
- Clan Wars
- Soul Wars
- The Fremennik Trials, but only the fourth phase of the duel with Koschei the Deathless
- The Resurrection reward for the TzHaar Fight Caves from the Karamja Elite Diary
- TzHaar Fight Pit
- Zulrah, but only the Resurrection reward from the Elite Western Provinces Diary
Disabled at launch
Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing will be disabled when Hardcore Worlds first release. Jagex says this is so they do not take away from the initial Wilderness hype, and the team is open to turning them on later if players want them.
Reset or Transfer: What Happens When You Die
Death on Hardcore Worlds happens in two stages.
Stage one: a normal death
First, the death is processed like any other. For most deaths you keep 3 items, or 4 with Protect Item active. PvP deaths in the Wilderness follow all the usual Wilderness rules, so whoever kills you gets the same loot they would in the main game.
Stage two: the choice
Then you choose between two options.
Reset wipes everything on that character, including the items you protected. Quests go back to uncompleted, stats return to their starting values and your items are gone. You play the character again as if you just left Tutorial Island. You get unlimited resets, so there is no extra hoop to jump through to try again. Jagex notes it is still working out how a few outliers will reset, such as the coins from the Stronghold of Security, and will share more before launch.
Transfer moves the character out of Hardcore Worlds and into the main game, with no way to return. You keep your protected items, your bank and everything in every other storage around the game.
The one rule that applies to both
Whatever you choose, anything that would normally go to your gravestone is gone for good. There is no running back to collect it. That is the mechanism that pulls items and gold out of the Hardcore Worlds economy.
No reinstatements
Jagex says these characters will be handled the same way Hardcore Ironmen are. Player Support will not reinstate Hardcore status on an individual basis for any reason. Only issues with mass player impact will be reviewed by the team. If you lose a character to a disconnect, that is the end of that run.
The Hardcore Worlds Economy
This is the part of the blog that has the community the most excited, and it is easy to see why.
Most separate game modes in Old School either remove the economy (Ironman-only modes) or distort it with boosted rates and a short lifespan. Hardcore Worlds do neither. Rates are normal, trading is open and the worlds are permanent. The difference is that every death destroys wealth.
Jagex even speculated that 1,000,000 GP might feel more like it did in 2007 than it does in the main game today. That is not a promise, but it gives you a sense of what the team expects: scarce supply, real risk and prices that could move a lot depending on who dies and when.
What that means for you in practice:
- Early supplies will matter. Food, runes, arrows and basic gear could be in demand in the first weeks.
- Skillers and gatherers could do well. On normal rates with deletion from deaths, steady raw materials may be worth more than you expect.
- Do not carry what you cannot afford to lose. Your gravestone items disappear permanently, so your protected items and your bank are what you keep.
- The Wilderness is more dangerous than ever. PKers get normal Wilderness loot, and each kill can leave a character stuck at a Reset or Transfer decision.
Escape Crystal Changes
Because Hardcore Worlds are the highest-risk content Jagex has made, the team took a fresh look at the Escape Crystal. If you have not used one, it is an equippable escape option that can activate automatically when there has been no input for a while, which is meant to save you if you disconnect or your device crashes.
What the blog says:
- Every Hardcore Worlds player starts with an Escape Crystal in their inventory.
- Jagex would like to reduce the price from 75,000 coins to 10,000 coins, so a new player can afford one after doing the Stronghold of Security.
- Jagex would like Death to sell Escape Crystals in his office, alongside Rick and the Mysterious Stranger in Ver Sinhaza.
- Jagex would like the crystals to clear poison, burn and other status effects when they activate.
World Firsts and Death Broadcasts
Hardcore Worlds will broadcast World Firsts and major deaths. Jagex plans to announce any player who dies above a certain threshold, with extra detail on how and where they died when possible. World First broadcasts are one and done.
The full list of World Firsts is coming later, but the blog gives examples:
- First completion of The Fractured Archive
- First completion of the TzHaar Fight Caves
- First completion of the Grandmaster Combat Achievements
- First death on Hardcore Worlds
World Switcher Improvements Later in November
The blog also previewed a revamped World Switcher, which will launch with an engine update toward the end of November, so not on day one of Hardcore Worlds.
What is changing:
- The World Switcher box on the login screen will show the world type and region at a glance.
- New filters let you toggle game modes, regions and members or F2P worlds. Hardcore Worlds will appear under the Show game modes filter.
- Activities on each world will be displayed directly, so you do not have to hover to find the right world for your grind.
- The same changes come to mobile.
- Desktop players can switch on compact view to get something closer to the old size, with filters still applied.
A Prep Plan for November 4
With the rules in hand, here is how we would approach launch week.
Before launch
- Settle your client settings now. Since you are making a new character, decide on your interface layout, keybinds and plugins ahead of time on your main so you are not fumbling on a fresh account.
- Check your connection and device. Disconnects are the classic Hardcore killer, and Player Support will not reinstate status. If you play on mobile, make sure battery and data will hold up.
- Plan an early route that avoids the unsafe list. Decide when, or if, you will do Pest Control, Nightmare Zone, Barbarian Assault and Fight Caves, since none of them are safe here.
- Read up on the Jagex Account migration. Jagex begins migrating remaining accounts on November 17, so it is worth getting your login situation sorted before you invest in a new character.
Launch week
- Keep your starter Escape Crystal equipped once you understand how it triggers.
- Bank often. Your bank survives a Transfer. Your gravestone does not survive anything.
- Skip the Wilderness early unless PvP is your goal. It will be busy and lethal.
- Watch for the launch changelog on November 4 to confirm the final Escape Crystal changes and any reset rules for outliers like Stronghold of Security coins.
After your first death
- Reset if the run is young and you want the pure Hardcore Worlds experience.
- Transfer if the character has meaningful progress you want to keep, knowing it can never come back.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do OSRS Hardcore Worlds come out?
Hardcore Worlds launch on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Jagex confirmed the date in its October 22 blog but did not give an exact unlock time. Old School game updates normally go live with the Wednesday morning update, and remember that US clocks fall back on November 1, so check Jagex's posts that week for the time in CT.
Can I play Hardcore Worlds on my existing OSRS account?
No. You need to start a fresh character on Tutorial Island and use Death's Delegate to reach Death's Office. Your existing main stays in the main game. Hardcore characters use the same save profile as the main game, which is what allows a Transfer after death.
How do I get to Hardcore Worlds from Tutorial Island?
Talk to Death's Delegate, a small reaper standing near the Magic Instructor's house and Paul, the Ironman Tutor. It sends you to Death's Office, where you accept Death's challenge and then hop to a Hardcore World, arriving outside Lumbridge Castle.
What happens when you die on Hardcore Worlds?
The death is processed normally first, so you keep 3 items or 4 with Protect Item. Then you choose Reset, which wipes everything on the character and lets you start again, or Transfer, which moves the character and its bank to the main game permanently. Gravestone items are deleted either way.
Are Hardcore Worlds rules different from Hardcore Ironman?
Yes. Hardcore Worlds use the stricter Hardcore Group Ironman death rules. Activities that are safe for a Hardcore Ironman, such as Pest Control, Nightmare Zone, Barbarian Assault, the Fight Caves, the Inferno, Chambers of Xeric, random events and your own house, are unsafe on Hardcore Worlds.
Which minigames are safe on Hardcore Worlds?
Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars and the TzHaar Fight Pit are safe. The fourth phase of the Koschei duel in The Fremennik Trials is safe, and so are the Fight Caves Resurrection reward from the Karamja Elite Diary and the Zulrah Resurrection reward from the Elite Western Provinces Diary.
Can you trade and use the Grand Exchange on Hardcore Worlds?
Yes. Hardcore Worlds have a full economy with trading and the Grand Exchange at normal game rates. Because the worlds are permanent and deaths delete gravestone items, Jagex expects supply to be tighter and gold to be worth more than in the main game.
Will Jagex restore my Hardcore status if I die to a disconnect?
No. Jagex says Player Support will not reinstate Hardcore status on an individual basis for any reason, the same policy as Hardcore Ironman. Only problems with mass player impact get reviewed. Keep your Escape Crystal equipped to reduce the risk.
Are Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing on Hardcore Worlds?
Not at launch. Jagex is disabling Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing for the initial release so they do not pull attention from the Wilderness, and the team says it is open to enabling them later if players want them.
What are the Escape Crystal changes for Hardcore Worlds?
Every Hardcore Worlds player starts with an Escape Crystal. Jagex also wants to cut the price from 75,000 to 10,000 coins, let Death sell them in his office, and make them clear poison, burn and other status effects, with those changes applying to the main game too. Check the November 4 changelog to see what ships.
