LOTRO The Wolves of Mordor Is Live: Update 50 Release Notes, Survival Instincts, Neighbours, Editions and Item Level 570

The Lord of the Rings Online just got its biggest shake-up in years. Update 50 shipped on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and it carries The Wolves of Mordor expansion with it: a new epic storyline, three regions in a forgotten corner of Mordor called Draugardh, a brand-new progression system called Survival Instincts, and Neighbours, the long-requested companions who move into your homestead and actually do things.

It is also a busy patch for people who never plan to set foot in Draugardh. Legendary Items get a new item level ceiling, the Virtue cap climbs to 104, the Lore-master's Ancient Master charges work completely differently, and the Ettenmoors gets one of the more meaningful monster play tuning passes in a while.

This guide walks through everything in the official Update 50 release notes, explains what each change means in practice, and flags the small traps (like the weekly mission quests that reset your progress) that are easy to miss on day one.

QUICK ANSWER · LOTRO Update 50 · Oct 28
• Live: Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after maintenance from 8:00 AM to noon CT (9 AM to 1 PM ET).
• Expansion: The Wolves of Mordor: new epic "...And the Verses of Victory", three Draugardh regions, 200+ quests, 90 deeds and 30 Missions. Level 160 required.
• New systems: Survival Instincts (unlocked server-wide for all your characters) and Neighbours, homestead companions with missions and gifts.
• Gear: Legendary Items can now reach item level 570. New level 160 lootbox and Delving gear scales to 567 to 569. Virtue cap is now 104.
• Watch out: Weekly mission quests and "A Plague of Ordâkhai" were reset. The raid and Instance Cluster arrive after launch.

When Did The Wolves of Mordor Go Live?

Standing Stone Games scheduled a four-hour maintenance window on Wednesday, October 28, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Eastern, which is 8:00 AM to noon Central. Update 50 went in during that window, so if you log in this afternoon you are on the new build.

If the launcher is crawling, that is normal for an expansion day. Let it finish patching in full rather than closing it early, since a partial patch is the usual cause of the "stuck at loading" complaints that pop up on launch afternoons.

How Much Does The Wolves of Mordor Cost?

The expansion comes in three editions, the same structure LOTRO has used for its recent expansions. Preorder coverage listed these prices:

EditionPrice (USD)NeighboursNotable extras
Standard$39.99Choose 2Expansion content and Expedition Supplies
Collector's$79.99Choose 35 Reputation Acceleration Tomes, a Virtue XP Accelerator, five 100% XP Accelerators, Rare Crafting Component x5 Selection Box
Ultimate Fan Bundle$129.99All 425k virtue XP, four Virtue XP Accelerators, Ultimate Carry-all Selection Box, 10 shared bank slots, Were-wolf Hunter armour, aura, steed and warsteed, "Scar" hound pet, XP Boost Earring, Housing Teleporter

According to the official FAQ, buying the Ultimate Fan Bundle also gives you the Expedition Supplies from the Standard and Collector's editions, so the higher tiers stack rather than replace each other. Expedition Supplies are limited to one per account.

There are two details that matter if you are on the fence:

  • No product key. Your account is updated automatically through the LOTRO Market. If you buy while logged in, log out and back in before the content shows up.
  • The Novice trait matters. Expedition Supplies and other once-per-account items go to the first character and server you log into after purchase, and that character must have the Novice trait. This is a safeguard so a character deletion does not wipe your one-time boxes, but it catches people who log straight onto a level 160 main.

Can you buy it with LOTRO Points?

Not yet. The FAQ says a Quest Pack: The Wolves of Mordor will go on sale in April 2027 for 2,995 LOTRO Points, covering the quests, deeds, Missions, Instances and the new epic story. Individual Neighbours will also be sold separately in April 2027 for 1,495 points each. The bundled cosmetics from the editions will not be sold separately for points, so if you want the Were-wolf Hunter look, the expansion editions are the only route.

The Story: "...And the Verses of Victory"

The new epic opens after the War of the Ring. The Free Peoples believe Sauron's forces are finished, but beyond the plateau of Gorgoroth an ancient bloodline of were-wolves has woken up and is hunting the heroes who brought the Dark Lord down.

To start it:

  • Get a character to level 160. This is a hard requirement.
  • Travel to Minas Tirith (Midsummer). Major stable-masters in South Bree, Edoras, Thorin's Gate, Michel Delving, Rivendell and the Beorninghús all offer swift travel there.
  • Find the Ranger Orthonn of the Grey Company outside the city stables.
Standing Stone recommends finishing "The Song of Waves and Wind" first, but it is not required. If you have been away since the last epic and do not mind a little story whiplash, you can jump straight in.

The Three New Regions of Draugardh

Draugardh is a part of Mordor the books never show us, and the expansion splits it into three regions with their own peoples and threats:

  • Heledhris: black hills scorched by the fires of Mount Doom. This is the opening region, and it is where you meet the Woses who teach you your first Survival Instincts.
  • Parth Rhavas: jagged plains home to wolf-revering Easterlings.
  • Nan Ogol: mist-filled depths ruled by were-wolves and older horrors.
The official count is more than 200 quests, 90 deeds and 30 Missions. That is a solid amount of zone content, and the deed count is worth noting because deeds feed virtue progression, which ties directly into the new Virtue cap below.

What is not in the launch build

The FAQ is clear that the raid and the new Instance Cluster arrive after launch. If you are a raid-focused kinship, today is about levelling Survival Instincts, gearing up through Delving and lootboxes, and getting alts into position. The group endgame lands later.

Survival Instincts: The New Progression System Explained

Survival Instincts are the headline system of the expansion. They work on every class and every role, and they are managed on a new page of the Trait Panel.

The key idea is that you learn them from the peoples of Draugardh. You build relationships through questing, exploration, treasure hunting, crafting and barter, and those relationships unlock new abilities. The Woses in Heledhris teach your first Tactic, Lesson and Skill Set.

There are four kinds of Survival Instincts:

TypeHow manyActive at onceWhat they do
Tactics93Reactive effects triggered by attacking, healing or taking hits: damage, healing, defense or enemy debuffs
Lessons3 (one per ally)1Activated abilities in the new regions, such as luring strong foes for treasure, better loot finds or summoning a wolfhound pack
Skill Sets31Extra skills that only work in Draugardh and use consumables crafted or bartered locally
Enhancements164Modify Tactics, Lessons, Skills and class interactions: more frequent triggers, stronger effects or added effects

Why the server-wide unlock is a big deal

Every Survival Instinct you unlock is earned server-wide. Once one character learns a Tactic, every character on that server has it. This is the most alt-friendly thing LOTRO has done in a long time. Your main does the legwork, and your alts arrive in Draugardh already kitted out.

The practical advice is simple: push one character through the relationship content first, ideally the one you play most, and treat that as an investment in the whole roster.

Skill Sets only work in the new regions

Skill Sets are different from the rest. They only function inside the regions added by The Wolves of Mordor, and they consume special items made from local resources or bought through barter from your allies. Think of them as a regional toolkit rather than a permanent power bump across Middle-earth.

Day-one known issue

The release notes list a known issue where your current and available trait configurations do not show on the Survival Instincts panel, even though equipped Survival Instinct traits do swap with your saved trait configurations. In other words, the swap works, the display does not. If you use trait loadouts, check your Instincts manually after swapping until this is patched.

Neighbours: Companions Come to Housing

Neighbours are companions who move into your homestead and build a friendship with you through stories, gifts and daily missions. Each one is shaped by twenty personality traits and a mood system, so no two play out the same.

How many you get depends on your edition: two with Standard (picked from a selection box), three with Collector's, and all four launch Neighbours with the Ultimate Fan Bundle.

Update 50 also ships a batch of Neighbour fixes and tweaks:

  • Neighbour missions now give you a skill to summon a scout, who appears behind you and completes the mission as normal.
  • Neighbour quests with missions from the community boards in Homesteads of Middle-earth now count toward the Weekly Mission quests.
  • A visual cue now shows when you hand in gifts, and a bug that left the gift button active with no valid gift selected is fixed.
  • Neighbours greet you faster after they appear, and all of their dialogue has been updated.
  • The "Many in Need" mission no longer spawns bears at the wrong level, and teleport points after "Mission: Haldo Rushbank, Chapter 5" and "Mission: Emmathron, Chapter 6" are fixed.
On transfers, the FAQ says Neighbour progress will move with your characters from Angmar and Mordor when transfers from those worlds start in November. Progress transfers for other worlds are still being worked on.

Legendary Items, Gear and the Virtue Cap

If you only read one section for your main, make it this one.

  • Legendary Items for level 160 characters can now advance to item level 570. The notes add a pointed reminder: do not forget to reforge.
  • New Adventurer's lootbox gear for level 160 characters now scales to item level 567 to 569. The same change applies to newly acquired Delving gear.
  • Soot-coated Adventurer's Essence Boxes can now be bartered from the Adventurer's Quartermaster and can drop from Adventurer's Steel-bound Lootboxes.
  • The Virtue cap is now 104 for characters level 158 or higher.
So the day-one upgrade path for a geared main looks like this: reforge your Legendary Items toward 570, pick up fresh lootbox or Delving pieces at 567 to 569, start chasing the new Essence Boxes, and use the 90 new deeds to push virtues toward 104.

A couple of smaller item fixes round this out. Sul Madásh crafted foods now correctly require level 151, and Fortunes now appear under the Festival category in the Auction House.

Crafting and housing extras

Level 151+ special Tracery recipes are now available through Delving barter, giving you a second way to get them besides featured instances. The Zajâni Oven housing decoration now works as a campfire for crafting, and a few hanging banners from Lalia's Market no longer need reputation to buy and use.

Class Changes in Update 50

Only three classes are touched directly, but the Lore-master change is substantial.

Lore-master: Ancient Master is now a button you press

Ancient Master charges used to activate the moment you earned them, which pushed Lore-masters into an awkward habit of not using their skills so they could save a charge for later. Update 50 flips that:

  • Charges are no longer active when earned.
  • Clicking Ancient Master (now on a one-second cooldown) spends one charge and empowers all of your empowered skills.
  • After you use an empowered skill, your skills go back to normal until you spend another charge.
  • Charges are now earned after 5 critical hits instead of 6.
  • Call to the Valar, when specialized in the yellow line, now grants 5 Ancient Master charges on activation.
In practice this should be a quality-of-life win. You build charges faster, you decide when they fire, and you no longer have to play around them. Expect some keybind rework, though: Ancient Master is now something you actively press, so it deserves a comfortable slot on your bar.

Burglar

Burgle now works on trolls and giants, in addition to evil men and orcs. That is a nice bump in how often the skill is useful in the open world.

Warden

Wardens who enter mounted combat in Red Dawn stance no longer have their fire and light oils swapped out for Rohirrim skills.

Ettenmoors and Monster Play Changes

The PvMP section is longer than the class section, and a few of these will shift fights.

  • Potency fix for instant effects. A bug in how base potency multipliers were calculated for monster player effects has been fixed. This affects instant damage and instant healing only, not initial skill damage or damage and healing over time. The result is that traits like +Healing and +Damage are no longer watered down on those effects, so most of them get slightly stronger. How much depends on your current potency traits.
  • ICPR rebalance. Monster player base in-combat power regen goes up by about 160, while the gruel bonus drops from 200 to 40. Maximum possible ICPR stays the same, but gruel matters much less.
  • Consumables last longer. Monster player foods and buff potions now last three times as long and cost three times as much, so the total cost is the same but you reapply far less often.
  • Potion fixes. Lesser CC-break potions that cost Morale now correctly give brief CC immunity. Improved stun and root potions that do not cost Morale are now rare quality so they stand out on your bars.
  • New reward trader. Monster Play Reward Track rewards have moved to a new trader named Mût, who sells current and previous season appearances, the current title, cosmetic weapons and march visual effects.
  • Sorceress buffs. Burning Devotion damage is up, Torrent again deals its bonus Torrent's Resolve damage to Ignited targets when fully channelled (with a clearer visual), and the Angmarim Sorceress now has background music.
  • Capture the flag cleanup. You cannot pick up an Artifact while holding a Relic (or the reverse), Strength of Arms now needs control of both artifacts, dropped objects no longer roll around with physics, team colors are correct, and Glory Seeking is suppressed rather than removed while carrying.
  • Delving of Frór. Quests now come from forward camps (the dwarf mining camp east of Gramsfoot for freeps, the orc logging camp west of Glan Vraig for creeps), daily and weekly rewards are better, and a stuck spot in Gwaelug's arena is gone.
  • Slayer deeds. New slayer deeds and titles exist for defeating River-hobbit players in monster play, and River-hobbit kills no longer count toward the old hobbit slayer deeds.
Warg Frenzy also lost its activation animation, and Ettenmoors radar issues are fixed.

Quest Resets You Should Know About Before Logging In

Two sets of quests are being versioned with this update, which means partial progress is lost:

  • "On A Mission (Weekly)" and "On A Continuing Mission (Weekly)" reset to make room for the new Draugardh missions.
  • The Imhular quest "A Plague of Ordâkhai" has been fixed so Mithril travel works, and in-progress progress on it is wiped.
If you were halfway through either weekly, there is nothing you can do now except restart it. The good news is that the new Neighbour board missions now count toward those weeklies, so they should be easier to fill this week.

Other quest fixes include clearer directions in "The Black Book of Mordor, Chapter 9.2: An Expedition to the Anvil", an easier-to-spot Natkam on the map in "Breaking the Front Lines", the Mur Ghala instance "A Gift for the Future" now failing correctly if Mesheget dies, and Bofur once again standing next to his goat in "Travellers on the Dark Road". The raid deed "Strength in Diversity" in Barrow-downs: Survival now progresses for Beornings, Brawlers and Mariners.

Veil of the Nine Legendary Server Rewards

Players on the Veil of the Nine Legendary servers get two new top-tier rewards from Amelia: housing objects showing the Nazgûl standing in a ring, and all nine mounted on their steeds in a charging line. Both are shared across your account once claimed. A Ringwraith AI crash bug has also been fixed.

Known Issues at Launch

The release notes list three known issues:

  • Trait configurations do not display on the Survival Instincts panel, although swapping still works.
  • Maps for the new Draugardh areas do not appear in the Show Map drop-down menu.
  • Meldir uses the wrong voice-over audio in the Heledhris instance "Predators Ahead".
The missing map drop-down is the one most players will notice. Open the map while you are physically in the zone instead of trying to select it from the menu.

Our Day-One Plan

If you want a straightforward order of operations for launch week, this is the one we would follow:

  • Before anything else, reforge your Legendary Items on your main.
  • Log in your expansion character with the Novice trait in mind if you just bought the expansion, so your Expedition Supplies go where you want them.
  • Head to Orthonn in Minas Tirith and start the epic, then lean into the Woses relationship content in Heledhris to start unlocking Survival Instincts server-wide.
  • Pick up your Neighbours and start their daily missions, since those now also feed the weekly mission quests.
  • Clear new deeds as you go to push toward the 104 Virtue cap.
  • Bring alts in once your main has a decent spread of Tactics and Enhancements unlocked.
Expansion launches usually mean a scramble for progress across several characters at once. The server-wide Instincts unlock changes that math: the hours you put into your main in Draugardh pay off on every alt on the same server, so it is worth picking your server home for the expansion before you commit.
