FFXIV Job Tier List 2026: Best Classes for Dawntrail Meta
FFXIV job tier list for Dawntrail patch 7.2. Pictomancer, Samurai, and Black Mage top the DPS charts. Paladin and Sage are peak tank/healer picks. Full breakdown by role and skill ceiling.

Job Tier List · FFXIV Dawntrail 2026
Two new jobs (Viper and Pictomancer) shipped with Dawntrail, and the 7.2 meta has stabilized. This tier list ranks every job for raid viability, dungeon DPS, and casual play. Tanks are tightly balanced (all four are S-tier picks); healers are split between pure healers and shield healers; DPS has clear S-tier standouts (Picto, Samurai, Black Mage) vs. comfortable B-tier options.

Which Job Should I Play in FFXIV Dawntrail?

The Dawntrail meta (patch 7.2, early 2026) has settled. Job balance is the tightest it's been in FFXIV's history — no job is "unplayable," and every role has multiple top-tier options. But a clear S-tier emerges across specific content types: Pictomancer tops raid DPS, Samurai leads physical melee, Paladin has the deepest defensive toolkit of any tank, and Sage is the most demanding healer to master.

The TL;DR Meta Picks

RoleS-tier pickBest for
TankPaladinTight mitigation rotation; strongest raid group-wide utility
HealerSageHighest DPS contribution; demanding kardia + shield management
Melee DPSSamuraiHighest personal DPS ceiling; simple rotation relative to damage
Phys Ranged DPSDancerBest group utility; dance partner mechanic
Caster DPSPictomancerTop-3 DPS parses; burst window unmatched

What Are the Best FFXIV Tanks in 2026?

Tanks are in a fantastic spot in Dawntrail — the tightest tank balance in the game's history. Every tank can clear the hardest content. Pick based on playstyle preference, not tier list ranking.

S-tier tank
The most defensively flexible tank with stacking mitigation (Sheltron → Holy Sheltron → Divine Veil). Brings raid-wide utility via Passage of Arms and Cover. Requires the most button presses of any tank — the learning curve is real, but the ceiling is the highest.
S-tier tank
Highest self-sustain via Bloodwhetting and Equilibrium. The simplest tank to maintain — Fell Cleave + Decimate priority is clean. Best choice for pugging savage content because of survivability.
S-tier tank
Burst-window focused — the Delirium + Blackest Night alignment is mechanically demanding. Living Shadow is one of the strongest buff-window damage dumps in the game.
S-tier tank
The 'selfish' tank — high personal DPS with GNB's burst window. Bloodfest gives a massive DPS throughput during burst. Weakest defensive kit of the four but makes up for it in damage.
Tank pick guidance: For raid progression (savage), pick the tank your group needs for mit coverage — if your co-tank is playing Warrior (self-sustain), go Paladin (utility). For dungeon content, Warrior is easiest; for ultimate-tier raids, Paladin's flexibility pays off.

If you'd rather skip the leveling grind and start raiding on a pre-leveled FFXIV job, established characters with multiple tanks and endgame gear are available on account marketplaces. Browse pre-leveled FFXIV accounts →

Which FFXIV Healer Is Best in Dawntrail?

Healer balance in Dawntrail is split between pure healers (White Mage, Astrologian) and shield/barrier healers (Scholar, Sage). Most savage groups prefer one of each.

JobRoleDPS ceilingLearning curve
SageBarrier (shield)Highest of any healerHardest — kardia + eukrasia + shield timing
ScholarBarrier (shield)High — Biolysis + Art of WarMedium — fairy management adds complexity
White MagePure (regen)Good — steady Glare rotationEasiest healer
AstrologianPure (regen)High — card system rewards skillHard — card management + Divination timing

S-Tier Healer: Sage

Sage tops the healer meta in Dawntrail because of its damage contribution. A good Sage out-DPSes most other healers by 15-20% while also having the tightest barrier kit (Kerachole, Panhaima, Krasis, Philosophia). The cost is complexity: managing Kardia target, Eukrasia modifiers, and barrier timing simultaneously demands constant attention.

A-Tier Healer: Scholar

Scholar is the safer shield healer alternative. Fairy management is automatic relative to Sage's Kardia, and Scholar's raid-wide utility (Summon Seraph, Expedient, Protraction) is top-tier. If you're new to shield healing, Scholar is the more forgiving pick.

A-Tier Healer: Astrologian

Astrologian in Dawntrail has Astrodyne stacking and card management — rewards smart rotation with the highest party-wide damage buff in the game. Complexity is real but the payoff is worth it for raid progression.

B+ Tier Healer: White Mage

White Mage is the "comfort zone" pure healer. Glare 4 rotation is straightforward, Lilies are a steady resource, and the job has the best emergency healing kit. Slightly lower DPS contribution than Sage/Scholar means it's rarely in the top composition for parsing, but for casual raiding it's excellent.

Which FFXIV DPS Is Strongest in 2026?

DPS in Dawntrail has a clear S-tier: Pictomancer, Samurai, and Black Mage. These three consistently parse in the top-3 across all savage content.

Caster DPS

S+ tier caster
New in Dawntrail. Pictomancer's burst window (Starry Muse + Subtractive Palette + Mog of the Ages) is one of the highest damage dumps in the game. Current top parser in many savage encounters. Rotation is complex but intuitive — a 'you-feel-when-it's-right' rhythm.
S-tier caster
The highest standstill DPS in the game. BLM requires you to stand still for optimal rotation — positioning awareness is the skill cap. Polyglot system is the job's signature mechanic. Ceiling is sky-high; floor is low.
A-tier caster
Simplest caster DPS — rotation cycles between summoning and spamming. Post-Dawntrail SMN is slightly below BLM/Picto but far more forgiving. Raid utility (Radiant Aegis, Searing Light) is substantial.
A-tier caster
Hybrid DPS with raise utility. Manafication → Embolden burst window is the signature. Red Mage sits just below S-tier but brings group utility (raise, Vercure) that no other caster offers.

Melee DPS

S-tier melee
Highest personal DPS ceiling among melee. Tsubame-gaeshi burst + Midare Setsugekka cycles = big damage. Simple rotation relative to damage output — SAM rewards clean execution with top parses.
A-tier melee
The utility melee. Trick Attack buffs the party; Bhavacakra + Dokumori are raid-burst contributions. Mudra rotation is the unique skill cap. Complex but high payoff.
A-tier melee
Chakra-focused rotation with Riddle of Fire burst windows. Monk has the tightest positional requirement in the game and strong multi-target damage (Rockbreaker cleave).
S-tier melee (new)
Added in Dawntrail. Mid-range melee with Dual-wielding playstyle. Powerful burst (Ouroboros + Ranged Shadow) and easier positionals than SAM/NIN. Still being tuned — current tier may rise further in 7.3.
B+ tier melee
Shroud-based rotation with Enshroud burst. Solid middle-ground melee pick. Not the absolute top of any category but reliable and forgiving.
A-tier melee
Jump-focused melee with the Life of the Dragon phase. Classic FFXIV melee job redesigned in Dawntrail for cleaner burst windows.

Physical Ranged DPS

S-tier phys ranged
The utility phys-ranged. Dance Partner buffs one ally (usually SAM or Picto) by 50% of your buffs. Party-wide buff timing is the skill gap. Lower personal DPS balanced by enormous group utility.
A-tier phys ranged
Songs + burst procs. BRD is the 'consistent' phys ranged — steady DPS output, good utility (Battle Voice, Radiant Finale). Strong in raid utility but sub-Dancer in group damage potential.
A-tier phys ranged
The 'selfish' phys ranged — all personal DPS, no party utility. Current tuning places MCH at the top for solo DPS among phys ranged but you lose Dancer/Bard's buffs.

What's the Easiest FFXIV Job to Learn?

Balancing learning curve against meta viability:

RoleEasiest entryFull rotation time to learn
TankWarrior5-10 hours
HealerWhite Mage5-10 hours
Melee DPSSamurai15-25 hours
Phys Ranged DPSDancer15-25 hours (party-aware)
Caster DPSSummoner5-15 hours

Summoner is often cited as the single easiest FFXIV job to reach competent play. Summon rotation is cyclic and predictable, raid utility is automatic, and Bahamut/Phoenix are powerful without requiring tight timing.

What's the Hardest FFXIV Job to Master?

Hardest tank
Sheltron → Holy Sheltron timing + Passage of Arms windows + GCD Blade combo alignment. Master-level PLD rotation involves 20+ meaningful decisions per minute.
Hardest healer
Kardia target selection, Eukrasia modifier timing, Zoe burst healing, barrier layering. Sage requires game-knowledge AND mechanical execution at the same time.
Hardest caster
Leylines positioning + Astral Fire timing + Polyglot management + Movement-planning during high-tempo boss moves. The highest-ceiling job in FFXIV by a wide margin.
Hardest melee
Mudra rotation + Trick Attack alignment + positionals + opener windows. NIN opener alone takes 40+ hours to memorize.

How Much Content Does Each FFXIV Job Have?

All jobs reach level 100 in Dawntrail. Unlocking content:

  • Tanks / Healers / Casters / Phys Ranged: available from level 30 after completing the base class quests. Low-level job quests are optional but lore-rich.
  • Melee DPS: Samurai (Stormblood), Ninja (Heavensward), Reaper (Endwalker), Viper (Dawntrail), Dragoon (A Realm Reborn), Monk (A Realm Reborn).
  • Pictomancer requires completion of Dawntrail's MSQ.

Per-Job Rotation Primers

Paladin Opener (Dawntrail 7.2)

PLD opener
Pot pre-pull → Fight or Flight (pre-pull 2s) → Confiteor → Blade of Faith → Blade of Truth → Blade of Valor → Expiacion → Circle of Scorn → Goring Blade → Royal Authority → Holy Spirit (under Divine Might). 2-minute burst window repeats. Priority queue: Goring Blade > Royal Authority > Holy Spirit.

Dark Knight Opener

DRK opener
Edge of Shadow + Disesteem combo alignment. Salted Earth pre-pull → Living Shadow (5s into fight) → Blood Weapon → Delirium → Burst. DRK's burst window is 2 minutes, perfectly aligned with raid buff windows.

Gunbreaker Opener

GNB opener
No Mercy → Double Down → Gnashing Fang (all 3 parts) → Bloodfest → double Sonic Break / Burst Strike / Double Down. Bloodfest refills all cartridges for extended burst. Highest personal DPS per GCD among tanks.

White Mage Rotation Primer

WHM core rotation
Glare IV spam + Dia maintenance. Every 30 seconds: Presence of Mind + Assize + Afflatus Misery (at 3 Blood Lily stacks). Lilies auto-generate every 20 seconds — use them (Afflatus Solace) for party heals without losing DPS.

Sage Rotation Primer

SGE core rotation
Eukrasian Dosis on boss (buff) + Dosis for DPS. Kardia on tank. Manage Haima/Panhaima shields between bosses. At 2-minute mark: Zoe → Pneuma or high-healing combo. Sage's difficulty comes from Kardia target switching based on who needs healing.

Samurai Rotation Primer

SAM core rotation
Build Shifu/Jinpu/Gekko (1-2-3 combo). At 3 Sen: Midare Setsugekka → Tsubame-gaeshi → Yukikaze-Gekko-Midare. Open with True North → Meikyo Shisui → Senor Senei → Higanbana. Midare hits 2500+ potency on target dummy.

Black Mage Rotation Primer

BLM core rotation
Fire III → Fire III → Fire III → Blizzard III → Blizzard IV → Fire I. Maintain Astral Fire uptime 95%+. Use Leylines for stationary Fire bursts. Polyglots (Foul / Xenoglossy) for movement uptime. The hardest rotation in FFXIV.

Pictomancer Rotation Primer

PCT core rotation
Subtractive Palette into Mog of the Ages burst window. Starry Muse buff alignment with 2-min raid window. Fire in Red + Aero/Water in Blue cycling. Rotation has natural rhythm; mistakes are forgiving because of Starry Muse + pots buffs align at 2:00.

Level-Synced Content Performance

Synced content (level-scaling) matters for daily roulettes. Job relative strength at synced levels:

Level 70 sync
Stormblood raid content
Many Stormblood-era jobs perform well here: Samurai and Red Mage shine. Post-SB jobs (SGE, RPR, VPR, PCT) sync down and lose key abilities.
Level 80 sync
Shadowbringers content
Dancer and Gunbreaker introduced here — work fully. Tanks sync well at 80+.
Level 90 sync
Endwalker content
Reaper and Sage added. Viper and Pictomancer (Dawntrail) can't access this content at sync.

Job Changing Mid-Progression

FFXIV uniquely lets you change jobs without character respec. Common job-change paths:
