The Complete Guide to WoW Mounts in 2026: Rarest Drops
From Invincible to the Black Qiraji Battle Tank, here's every rare and removed mount worth chasing in WoW — and which ones are gone forever.

The Complete Guide to WoW Mounts in 2026

Mount collecting is one of World of Warcraft's most enduring endgame activities. With over 900 mounts in the game as of Midnight, the collection journey is massive — and some of the most prestigious mounts are ones you can never obtain again. This guide covers the rarest drops, the most valuable removed mounts, and practical tips for growing your collection.

The Unobtainable Tier: Mounts You Can Never Get

These mounts have been permanently removed from the game. The only way to have them is to have earned them when they were available — or to acquire an account that already has them. They represent the pinnacle of mount collecting prestige.

Black Qiraji Battle Tank — The legendary "Scarab Lord" mount from the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj opening event in 2006. Only one player per server could earn this mount by completing the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest chain and ringing the gong first. Estimates suggest fewer than 500 of these exist across all servers worldwide. Wowhead's historical article has the full story.

Gladiator Mounts — Every PvP arena season awards a unique mount to players who reach Gladiator rating (top 0.5%). Once the season ends, that specific mount is gone forever. The earliest Gladiator mounts — the TBC Nether Drakes (Swift, Merciless, Vengeful, Brutal) — are among the rarest mounts in the game, as TBC had a smaller player base in the arena bracket.

Plagued Proto-Drake — Awarded for completing The Undying achievement (the 10-man version) in original Naxxramas, which required clearing the raid without any player deaths. This was removed when Naxxramas was reworked, making it one of the most exclusive mounts in the game.

Black Proto-Drake — Originally awarded for completing the Glory of the Raider (25-player) meta achievement, which included the Immortal achievement in 25-man Naxxramas. It was removed with patch 3.1 when Ulduar launched, not Cataclysm.

Amani War Bear — The original timed Zul'Aman bear run reward in TBC. Not to be confused with the Amani Battle Bear from the Cataclysm version, which is still obtainable.

Swift Zulian Tiger — Dropped from High Priest Thekal in the original Zul'Gurub raid. When ZG was reworked in Cataclysm, this mount was removed from the loot table. The Raptor from the same raid suffered the same fate.

The Ultra-Rare Tier: Still Obtainable, But Don't Hold Your Breath

These mounts are technically still in the game, but their drop rates are so low that farming them is a multi-year commitment.

Invincible — Drops from the Lich King on 25-man Heroic difficulty in Icecrown Citadel. Estimated drop rate: ~1%. With weekly lockouts, you're looking at roughly 100 weeks (nearly two years) of farming on average — per character. Data for Azeroth tracks ownership percentages for most rare mounts.

Ashes of Al'ar — Drops from Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep. Another ~1% drop rate with weekly lockouts. The phoenix mount has been a status symbol since TBC.

Deathcharger's Reins — Drops from Baron Rivendare in Stratholme. While the dungeon is farmable (no weekly lockout), the drop rate is approximately 0.8%. The good news: you can chain-run Stratholme in about 5 minutes per clear at max level.

Time-Lost Proto-Drake — A rare spawn in Storm Peaks that requires camping specific flight paths. No drop rate issue here — the challenge is finding the rare spawn before someone else does. Competition for this mount has decreased over the years, making it more obtainable now than at any point in WoW's history.

Big Love Rocket — Drops from the Love is in the Air holiday event boss, once per character per day during the two-week event. Estimated drop rate: 0.03%. This is widely considered the rarest farmable mount in the game due to the combination of low drop rate and limited farming window.

Building Your Collection: Practical Tips

1. Use all your alts Most mount drops are once-per-week-per-character. Running Icecrown Citadel on 10 characters gives you 10 chances per week instead of one. With Midnight's account-wide mount collection, any character can farm any mount.

2. Focus on removed content first Mounts that come from current content will be farmable later. Mounts tied to time-limited content (seasonal events, FOMO rewards, limited-time achievements) should be prioritized.

3. Buy what you can Some rare mounts are purchasable from vendors or the auction house:

  • Reins of Poseidus — underwater mount, drops from a rare in Vashj'ir and often appears on the AH
  • Trading Card Game mounts like the Spectral Tiger occasionally appear on the BMAH (Black Market Auction House) for gold cap
4. Track your progress Simple Armory and Data for Azeroth both offer mount collection trackers that show which mounts you're missing and where to farm them.

5. Don't neglect reputation mounts Many reputation factions offer mounts at Exalted — these are guaranteed rewards for putting in the time. They won't make headlines, but they add up quickly for collection score purposes.

Mount Collecting and Account Value

Mount collection is one of the biggest factors in WoW account valuation. An account with 500+ mounts, including several unobtainables, is worth significantly more than an account with max-level characters but a small mount collection.

The most valuable mounts for account pricing:

  • Black Qiraji Battle Tank — adds thousands to account value alone
  • Gladiator mounts (especially TBC-era) — each one adds significant value
  • Plagued/Black Proto-Drake — early Wrath unobtainables
  • Spectral Tiger / Swift Spectral Tiger — TCG mounts that can't be obtained through gameplay

The Journey Is the Destination

Mount collecting in WoW is a marathon, not a sprint. With 900+ mounts spanning 20 years of content, no one collects them all overnight. The beauty is in the variety — one week you're farming a raid boss for a 1% drop, the next you're doing daily quests for a reputation mount, and the week after that you're camping a rare spawn in a zone you haven't visited in years.

Every mount in your collection tells a story. That's what makes collecting them so rewarding.

Happy hunting.
